We Might Just Be

44: For The Best

Sipping on his mug of coffee, Gerard stared across the kitchen, a strange lump still fixed in his throat. It had been a long night, after his fight with Imelda had finished, he had spent most of the night just lying in bed and staring at the ceiling, and he’d only gotten a couple of hour sleep before he was awake and thinking about it again, something he hadn’t been able to stop doing since it was confirmed that their relationship was over. He wanted to make it right, Imelda was easily the best thing to have happened to him, but he couldn’t bring himself to change his mind, even if it did mean that he would keep her. Marriage wasn’t on his radar and no matter how many times he attempted to rationalise getting down on one knee for his pregnant ex-girlfriend, he simply couldn’t do it. The commitment scared him, the idea of planning scared him, and he couldn’t see him getting over it. He wasn’t ready for marriage and couldn’t ask Imelda to wait around for him until he was quite simply because he didn’t know if he would ever be.

Swallowing another mouthful of the warm liquid, he lifted his head, watching as Imelda came to a stop in the door way, an undecipherable look on her face. “Immy?” he posed gently, “Querida, are you ok?” he added. Imelda blinked a couple of times before she nodded, gesturing to the packed suitcase that sat at her feet.

“I called my madre this morning” she murmured, her green eyes looking anywhere but at him “She said that I can stay with her and papa for a while until I have somewhere else to go. She also said that she would have Aiden and Ashley come by and get my stuff. I don’t want to get in the way anymore” she explained.

“Im, you’re not in the way” Gerard replied with a little shake of his head “And you don’t have to leave. Whether we are in a relationship or not, this is still my bump” he quipped with a motion to the large bump that stuck out from beneath her shirt. It was going to be hard, with him and Imelda broken up, the rest of her pregnancy as well as custody arrangements would provide a problem, but he wasn’t just going to let the baby go too. He was going to do his part and stick by his baby.

Imelda shifted. “I…I can’t stay here” she stammered, a sound that made Gerard drop his head. She hadn’t stammered around him in months.

“You can” Gerard encouraged.

Imelda shook her head. “It will be too hard on us both. It is best this way” she explained.

Gerard nodded stiffly. “Alright” he murmured “I will see you next week for the appointment with Marcos” he noted, trying his hardest not to cry.

Imelda sniffed a little and nodded. “I am sorry” she whispered before she turned on her heel, padding out of the doorway. Gerard watched after her, briefly debating chasing after her, but he opted against it. It wasn’t fair on her, him attempting to change her mind, and he didn’t want to make things harder than they already were. He wanted to be on decent terms with her by the time their baby was born.

“Mi hija” Gloria whispered as she wrapped her arms tightly around Imelda’s frame, hugging her as tightly as her bump would allow. She felt for her daughter, Imelda clearly didn’t want things with her boyfriend to be over, but she had made the right call. If they couldn’t agree on where they were going, things would only go sour and Imelda had made the right call getting out when she had. The last thing she needed was to be at war with the man who had gotten her pregnant. Imelda sniffed and hugged her mother close for a few seconds before she pulled away, looking at her through tearful eyes. Gloria sighed and wiped her daughter’s eyes, offering her a comforting smile. “Sweetie, it was the best thing” she murmured.

Imelda sighed. “Then why does it feel so shitty?” she murmured.

Gloria shook her head and took Imelda’s hand, helping her to the couch. “You love him” Gloria cooed gently as she allowed Imelda to curl up against her “And it is going to hurt for a while Immy, but it was the right decision. He’s clearly not ready for the sort of commitment you are” she whispered as she brushed her fingers through Imelda’s dark hair. She liked Gerard, the defender had made Imelda remarkably happy, but if he couldn’t commit to her like she wanted him to, she was right to leave. She would have wasted a lot of time waiting for him to make a move that he may never have made.

“I miss him already” Imelda murmured gently.

Gloria sighed. “And you will do. But you need to be brave about this, Immy. You’re going to see him still, because of bump, and you need to promise that you won’t fall back over him. I know you love him, but you shouldn’t have to give up something that is very important to you just so that you can be with him. Immy, you deserve someone who shares your wants and if that isn’t Gerard, then you need to accept it” she whispered.

Imelda sniffed a little before Elias stepped into the room, his expression firm.

“Eli” Gloria murmured “Please, don’t cause a scene” she added.

“He made her cry, Gloria” Elias replied.

“And I am sure that you going around there and hitting him will only serve to make things worse. Like it or not, he is going to be the father of your grandchild” she replied, her voice soft yet at the same time authoritative.

Elias looked down at his wife and sighed. “What am I supposed to do?” he murmured.

“You could give our little girl a hug” Gloria suggested “It has been a while since you hugged her” she added.

Elias looked at Imelda for a second before he nodded his head, taking Gloria’s spot on the couch and pulling his little girl closer. “I am sorry, Im” he whispered gently.

Imelda sniffed and held him close, something which made Elias to shake his head. He didn’t like it, Gerard had made Imelda cry, but he knew he couldn’t get in the middle of it. Gloria was right, whether he liked it or not, Gerard was the father of Imelda’s baby and he couldn’t change it.
