We Might Just Be

51: We Make Sense

“Are you sure that you want to go out there?” Imelda mused as she smoothed down the front of her shirt, trying to calm the nerves that twitched in her stomach. She was scared, from what Gerard had explained, Elias was less than thrilled about his being back in her life, and the last thing she wanted to do was deal with her father. He wasn’t rational at the best of times.

Gerard scoffed. “If you think I am going to let you go out there alone like that, then you have another thing coming” he muttered, his hand gesturing to her bump. It wasn’t going to be pleasant, Elias’ face had screamed it as soon as he had spotted the defender, and there was no way he was going to let her do it alone. The stress would not have done any good for their baby.

“I will be fine, Geri, you don’t have to…” Imelda’s voice trailed away as Gerard stood up, pressing a firm kiss against her lips. “Mi amor, we are a team remember? I will be by your side” he assured her. Imelda peeked up at him for a second before she conceded, her hand gently wrapping around his. “Together” she murmured. Gerard nodded his head and squeezed her hand softly before he led her out of her bedroom and into the living room where Elias and Gloria sat.

“Decided to come and see us then did you?” Elias muttered, his dark eyes glancing up at his youngest bitterly.

“Eli” Gloria muttered.

Elias scoffed. “What? She’s been camped in that room for almost half an hour Gloria. She’s clearly scared” he muttered.

“You’re not helping” Gerard muttered.

Elias glared up at the younger man for a second before he flicked his eyes to Imelda, his gaze softening just slightly. “I just want to know why, Immy” he murmured “You were doing so well, you hadn’t mentioned him other than in conjunction with the baby and I was so proud. Why would you choose to be with this man again?” he posed gently.

“Because I love him” Imelda replied simply.

“He doesn’t want what you want Immy” Elias protested “He told you that. Do you know what you are giving up to be with him?” he added.

Imelda nodded her head. “I know what I am doing papa. I have always know and I know that I want to be with Gerard, no matter the complications or the disagreements, I feel happier when I am with him and I feel miserable without him” she explained gently.

“But…”

“There are no buts” Imelda interjected softly “Papa, this is the man I love, the man I want to be with and I don’t want it to be a problem. I know you worry…”

“Worry? Imelda, I am terrified for you” Elias whispered.

“Why?” Gerard poked from his spot beside Imelda.

Elias shifted a little before he sighed, looking at the couple who stood ahead of him, their hands tightly wound together. “Because she is my youngest. Because my oldest daughter as a habit of taking what it not hers and because you have twice made her cry for reasons I cannot forget or ignore. You have her” Elias whispered “You have her heart and her soul and you tried to destroy that twice. How do I know that it won’t happen again? Gerard, I love my daughter and I cannot pick up the pieces again” he muttered.

Gerard looked at the older man for a second before he turned to Imelda, noting the slightly tearful look that lingered on her features at her father’s words. “Elias, relationships are about being scared” he murmured. Elias opened his mouth to retort, but was cut off when Gerard lifted his hand, signaling that he wanted to keep talking. “I am not the best at them, I have my issues and Immy, she has hers, but we work, even if there have been bumps along the way, we make sense. I know you are scared, my parents are the same with me, but if you don’t let Immy fall, she will never know how to get back up. I am not perfect and I know in my heart that if she tried, Immy could find a man that is better for her than me, but I love her and I know she loves me and that should be good enough. I am not Antonio, I am not going to walk away now. I want Immy, our son too and I need you to start trusting me. Elias, I am not a bad guy” he mused, an earnest look fixed on his face.

Elias looked at the defender for a second before he turned to his daughter. “Are you sure that he is what you want?” he murmured.

Imelda smiled and took Gerard’s hand, nodding her head gently. “He is, papa” she grinned.

“And my daughter, you want her?” Elias quipped, flicking his eyes to Gerard.

Gerard nodded. “One hundred percent” he smiled.

Elias looked at the couple for a moment before he let out a little sigh, something which made Gloria take his hand. “She loves him, Eli, like Lia does Cesc and Aiden does Ashley. Can’t you give her the same blessing?” she posed, smiling at her daughter who was shyly playing with Gerard’s fingers, awaiting Elias’ next words.

“Cesc didn’t leave Lia, nor did he tell her that they didn’t want the same things” Elias protested.

“Sir” Gerard interjected, causing Elias to look at him “I am working on getting to a point when I can propose to your daughter. It is just going to take time” he added with a little look towards Imelda.

Elias looked at him. “You are?” he poked.

Gerard nodded. “It is what Immy wants and, even if it isn’t as quick as you would both like it, I am working on it. Sir, I want to be with your daughter and I would like for it not to be a problem for you. I want Immy to have her padre and my son to have his abuelo” he mused.

Elias peered at him for a second before he sighed. “If it is what you want, Imelda…”

“It is papa” Imelda interjected.

“Then you have my blessing” he muttered.

Imelda let out a little noise before she moved to her feet, wrapping her arms around her father’s neck as she hugged him tightly, thanking him gently. “I swear, one more time…” Elias grumbled but his voice trailed off as Imelda turned back to Gerard, kissing him gently. He didn’t like it, Gerard still didn’t seem quite right for his daughter, but she wasn’t going to take it and Elias didn’t want her to have to hide from him. Imelda was his daughter, his baby, and he wanted to be there for her.
