We Might Just Be

06: Maria Torres

“What is tonight about?” Gerard noted from his spot on Imelda’s bed, his blue eyes glancing at the closed bathroom door. It had been a week since they had agreed to pretend and, with the end of the football season having arrived early for Cesc thanks to a hamstring strain, the midfielder and Thalia were hosting a dinner to celebrate their engagement, something which Gerard was dreading. He was thrilled for the couple, he had liked Thalia since they had met and he knew she was a good fit for the midfielder, but the idea of being around them in their clearly loved up state irked him, even if he was ‘dating’ Imelda, the last thing he wanted to do was spend the evening listening to Cesc ramble on and on about his happiness.

Imelda, who had been getting dressed, pulled the door to the bathroom open, offering Gerard yet another look at her. He should have been used to it, he had spent more and more time around Imelda in the last week, but he still hadn’t quite adapted to the little flip that he stomach did whenever he looked at her. There was something about Imelda and, despite his vow to wait to get involved, it drew him to her. Imelda noted the line of his stare and shook her head, placing her hand beneath his chin and guiding his eyes up to her face. “Up here, pretty boy” she quipped.

Gerard blushed slightly and nodded, muttering a little apology beneath his breath. “Why do we have to go to dinner?” he posed, his blue eyes holding the stare of her greens.

“Because Thalia wants to celebrate her engagement and she wants to do it with her family and Cesc with his. They said you had to come both because you are the best man, but mostly because you are my ‘boyfriend’” she noted, using air quotes around the ‘b’ word.

Gerard rolled his eyes. “Your sister cares that much that we are ‘dating?” he grumbled, leaning back on the bed slightly.

“To Thalia, besides her wedding, this is the most fascinating thing in the world. I haven’t dated anyone in years and so for me to ‘have’ you, it is the most exciting thing that has happened for a while” she explained softly.

Gerard quirked a brow. “You haven’t dated in years?” he poked.

Imelda shook her head. “I never found the right guy” she quipped gently “Or, when I did, my other sister took him” she added, referring to the last boyfriend she had had. She had only been 19, Maria had been 25 and her boyfriend had thought it was OK to sleep with both of them, something which ultimately led to him picking Maria over Imelda and leaving the younger girl devastated.

“Your sister took your boyfriend?” Gerard pressed incredulously

Imelda shook her head. “Maria didn’t take him exactly. Antonio was a moron who thought he could sleep with us both at the same time, but when we both found out, he chose to stay with Maria” she explained.

Gerard went to question it, but was stopped as Imelda turned her back on him, showing off the zip that was still down at the base of her dress. “Could you pull it up?” she posed.

Gerard took a little breath and nodded, trying not to focus on the floral pattern that adorned the straps of her lace bra. “Your dress is nice” he noted gently, trying to distract himself.

Imelda blushed gently. “Gracias” she murmured “You look nice in your shirt and tie” she added.

Gerard smiled. “We are going to need to work on the whole talking to one another thing” he noted with a slight laugh.

Imelda nodded. “It will come” she noted “Besides, the whole blushing and mumbling thing could work for us. People would expect a new couple to be a little nervous around one another” she explained.

Gerard smiled before he gently brushed her dark hair down her back, admiring the little waves and curls there were to it.

Imelda noted the feel of his fingers at the back of her dress and swallowed a little, reminding herself that she was only his pretend girlfriend.

Imelda stiffened a little as her older sister’s voice entered her ears, something which made Gerard squeeze her hand a little. “It is just your sister” he murmured lowly “She won’t kill you” he added.

“She might do” Imelda returned “You have seen yourself in a mirror right?” she added.

Gerard rolled his eyes. “I am sure she is not that bad” he quipped.

“She’s 30 years old and she has been married twice” Imelda returned before she was pulled from Gerard’s side and wrapped in a hug by a blonde woman.

Gerard eyed the blonde for a moment before he cleared his throat, causing her to pull away from Imelda. “Oh!” she squeaked “Lia mentioned that you were bringing someone new, Immy” the blonde giggled.

Imelda nodded and moved back to Gerard’s side, taking his large hand once more. “Gerard, this is my other sister Maria. Maria, this is Gerard, my b…boyfriend” she stammered, earning yet another soft squeeze of her hand from Gerard.

Maria looked at the tall man for a second before she scoffed. “You’re kidding me right?” she giggled “There is no way that you and him are a couple” she added. She knew that it was harsh, Gerard was clearly there with Imelda, but she simply couldn’t believe that they were a couple. He was stunning and Imelda, as pretty as she was, just didn’t quite suit him.

Gerard frowned, not liking the way that Maria spoke to her sister.

“Well, whether you believe it or not, we are” Imelda noted.

Maria rolled her eyes. “What have you paid the man?” she poked.

Gerard wrinkled his nose. “She has paid me nothing” he muttered “I happen to think she is one of the most beautiful and charming women I have ever met and I would appreciate you stopping talking” he quipped, his eyes narrowed on the blonde. He knew he wasn’t Imelda’s real boyfriend, but that didn’t mean he was going to let Maria get away with talking to Imelda like that. The dark haired girl didn’t deserve to be put down like her sister was trying to do.

Maria squeaked. “Are you going to let him talk to me like that?” she noted, her eyes on Imelda.

Imelda nodded. “He can say what he wants. I don’t control him” she quipped before Maria rolled her eyes, storming away from the pair.

Gerard watched after her and shook his head. “She’s a witch” he commented.

Imelda nodded. “Agreed” she smiled.

Gerard admired her smile for a second before he heard Cesc’s voice calling to them, chanting ‘kiss her’ over and over again.

Imelda blushed. “Your friend is a moron” she noted.

Gerard nodded. “He is” he noted “But he also has a point. If you are my girlfriend, I definitely should kiss you right now” he added in a low whisper that only she could hear.

Imelda blushed, but nodded her head, giving him the green light to press a little kiss against her lips, one that made her slightly dizzy.
