We Might Just Be

64: Cagey & Defensive

“Are you sure that you want to do this?” Lionel posed as he looked around the small conference room that Gerard had been set up in. He knew that Gerard was going to do it, the defender had his mind firmly made up, but Lionel couldn’t help but be a little wary. Sometimes, Gerard could get riled and say things he didn’t mean, something which he was likely to do in the interview he had agreed to give. It hadn’t been his choice, his agent had suggested that it was the best thing, and Gerard, who mostly wanted the problem swept away, had conceded his agreement, something which had led him to the one on one interview with a reporter that had been flown in especially.

“No” Gerard commented “But I don’t have much of a choice. According to my madre, the press are starting to upset Immy and I will not stand for that. I need to do something and this is best idea we have” he added, his blue eyes peeking at the older woman who stood a little away from them, conversing with a member of staff.

“I know that” Lionel returned “But you know how you get. This woman is going to ask personal questions Gerard and you don’t like that. You could just make this worse” he noted.

“I have to do something” Gerard sighed.

Lionel nodded his head gently before he padded out of the room, affording Gerard the chance to walk towards the tabloid journalist, “Hola” he mused gently.

The older woman jumped a little at the sound of his voice before she turned, offering him a polite smile. “You must be Gerard, I am Esther and I will be doing the interview for you today” she explained.

“It is nice to meet you Esther” The defender mused as he shook her hand.

“Shall we get started?” The reporter mused, gesturing to the seats at their side. Gerard nodded his head and pulled a chair out, pouring himself a glass of water.

“Right, we’ll start with setting the scene. You are engaged yes?” Esther posed.

Gerard smiled. “I am, I have been or 4 weeks now” he enthused.

“And the girl you are engaged to, that is Imelda Torres correct?” she posed.

Gerard nodded.

“You’ve recently had a baby together?” Esther posed.

Gerard nodded. “We have a four week old son, Theodore Piqué Torres, thought we mostly just call him Theo” he explained. Esther nodded her head and scribbled something onto her note pad.

“How long have you been dating Miss Torres?” she posed.

“13 months” Gerard confirmed gently “We met when her sister was planning her wedding to my best friend. Thalia and Cesc concocted the idea of setting us up and we haven’t really looked back since. I love her and I don’t know what I would do without her” he explained with a fond smile.

Esther smiled. “You went to that wedding together didn’t you?” she posed.

Gerard nodded. “It was one of the best days of my life, let alone for Cesc and Lia” he joked, earning a little laugh from the reporter.

“Talk to me about Poppy” she noted.

Gerard heaved a little sigh before he nodded. “Imelda and I had broken up. We had just figured out that we were after two very different out of our relationship and I was hurting. I was…I still am head over heels for her and it devastated me, so in an ill-advised attempt to numb my feelings, I made my way to a bar and proceeded to get drunk. It was then that I met Poppy” he noted.

Esther nodded her head and scribbled something down. “What did you do when you were with her?” she posed.

“We made out” Gerard admitted brazenly “We were in the bathroom, but it never went further than that and I swear I have not been near her since. I met her once, I made one mistake and that was it. I haven’t seen hide nor hair of her since that night and I don’t understand why she has gone out of her way to do this now. Neither me nor Imelda has done anything to her” he explained.

Esther nodded. “Why had you and Imelda broken up?” she posed.

“Is that relevant?” Gerard quipped back, a little defensively. He knew it was an honest question, but he didn’t want to answer it. It made Imelda sound high maintenance and him sound like coward.

Esther nodded. “It might contribute to the story. Was it a mutual decision? What was the reason behind it?” she pressed.

Gerard grumbled beneath his breath for a moment before he shook his head. “It was mutual” he murmured “I had told Imelda that I didn’t want to get married and she was upset by it. In the end, we decided that if we couldn’t agree, then we were best off apart, but that was a mistake. I love Imelda, more than anything, and I do want to marry her” he insisted.

“What changed your mind?” Esther posed.

“Why is this relevant? This is supposed to be about me telling the world in no uncertain terms that I have never done anything that Poppy is accusing me of, why is my opinion on marriage important?” he muttered.

“Gerard, people are interested. You and Imelda are a remarkably introverted couple and people want to know about you” Esther explained.

Gerard shook his head. “I am not going to put Imelda out there like this. This interview isn’t about my relationship with her, it is about Poppy and the malicious lies she made up for no apparent reason” he argued back.

Esther jotted something down on her pad, causing Gerard to frown. “What are you writing on there?” he murmured.

“It is just some notes” Esther replied “For when I write up the article” she explained.

Gerard narrowed his eyes and moved to take the pad away from her. “You think I am cagey?” he muttered.

“You don’t talk openly” Esther commented.

“And you think I am defensive?”

“You won’t tell me what changed your mind about proposing. Gerard, people are not going to believe a word you say if you cannot be open and honest when I ask you things. Right now, you look defensive and nervous and that isn’t going to translate well” Esther explained gently. She liked the defender, he clearly adore his family, but she knew people wouldn’t buy it. He was nervous, defensive and that wasn’t going to help convince people that he was innocent and that Poppy was a liar.

Gerard stared at the note pad for a moment before he sighed. “It scared me” he murmured “I had been in deep before, I was with Shakira for almost 5 years and she turned out to be one of the worst things to happen to me, I didn’t want that to happen between me and Immy. She drives me crazy in a good way and I worried, I still do, that in a few years’ time, Immy will realize that I am not the right guy for her and will leave, something which prevented me from proposing. I didn’t want to go through a divorce or anything that would have made it harder, but then Immy gave birth to Theo and I knew that we were it. I love her and I want to be with her, regardless of the risks” he explained.

Esther smiled and slid the notepad out of his hand, scribbling a note down. “I will have this written up and out in the next few days. Gracias Gerard for your time” she cooed before she shook his hand and stepped out of the room. Gerard watched after her and sighed, hoping it was enough to make things better.
