We Might Just Be

82: Different Sides

“I am going to miss you” Imelda murmured as she watched Gerard pack his bag. It had been a couple of days since Cesc had walked out on Thalia and with the New Year having been welcomed, Gerard was due to return to Barcelona, something that he would be doing without Imelda or Theo. It wasn’t what he wanted, he wanted to take his little family home and get their lives back to normal, but with Thalia still cut up and the threat of Cesc returning, Imelda had opted to stay on for a week, something which Gerard had leant his support to. He didn’t like it, he had never liked being apart from Imelda or Theo for more than a couple of hours, but he knew that it had to be done. Thalia still needed a little support and Imelda, being the only one that knew what had happened, had been kind enough to offer it, something Gerard knew he couldn’t prevent. Thalia had been a shadow of herself, she barely spoke or ate, and Gerard couldn’t force Imelda to leave her in the state she was in, part of him would never forgive himself if he did.

“I will miss you too, but you and Theo will be home soon enough. Take care of Lia, Immy, it’s what you are good at” Gerard smiled as he moved to zip up his bag.

“I still hate that I am not going with you” Imelda mumbled as she placed her arms around him.

“I know, you’ve said that 3 or 4 times since you woke up, but we both know that this is the best place for you right now and I am not going to tear you away from it. Lia needs you and I am prepared to wait to have you home if it means making her feel a little better” he explained softly.

Imelda smiled. “You’re such a sweetheart, aren’t you?” she mused, peeking up at his face.

“I like to think so” he mused softly “But only when it comes to you and your family, Immy” he added.

Imelda blushed gently and leant up to kiss him, only to stop as the sound of yelling entered their ears. “Cesc” Imelda murmured.

Gerard nodded. “He texted last night” he confessed gently “Said that he was going to come by for some stuff, but I told him not to. Trust him to ignore my advice” he muttered with a small eye roll. Imelda swallowed a little at the sound of the yelling. It was vicious, Thalia in particular was using words that Imelda had never envisaged her sister saying, and it made her flinch, something which made Gerard sigh. “Do you want me to get rid of him?” he murmured, earning a timid nod from his girlfriend.

Gerard nodded his head gently and unwound himself from Imelda’s hug, quietly making his way down the stairs and into the living room where Thalia stood, yelling at the top of her lungs at Cesc who merely stood away from her, an emotionless look on his face. “Lia, go upstairs” the defender murmured. Thalia looked up at him, but quickly nodded her head, moving up the stairs to leave the two footballers alone.

Cesc watched his estranged wife go and sighed. “Gracias for that, hombre, I thought she was going to start throwing things” he muttered nonchalantly.

Gerard scoffed. “Trust me, if it wasn’t for that fact that Immy can’t stand seeing her sister so upset, I would have left her. Heck, I might have even started throwing things myself” he muttered.

Cesc looked up, a small frown on his face. “What?” he murmured.

Gerard laughed. “Are you for real? What did you expect me to say Cesc? Don’t sweat it, you can do what you want to Lia and I won’t give a shit? She’s my girlfriend’s sister and I cannot ignore what you did. What the heck were you thinking?” he snarled, his fingers jabbing the side of the smaller man’s head.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen” Cesc muttered.

Gerard shook his head. “Spare the bullshit, hombre” he muttered “What did Lia do to deserve what you have done?” he added.

Cesc sighed. “It just grew so boring, Gerard” he mumbled “We weren’t the same, she wasn’t the girl I fell for, she became a mum and that was all she was. She talked and fussed about Ella the whole time, she never made any attempt to fuss over me and when I started to get frustrated, Delilah was there. At first, it was a distraction, something which meant I could still be a husband to Thalia, but it got to be more than that. I have feelings for Delilah and I don’t know if my feelings for Thalia provide me with enough to stay here” he explained.

Gerard rolled his eyes. “You’re despicable” he muttered.

“Gerard…”

“No, Cesc, I can’t pretend that I am even close to being on your side” he hissed.

“I bet if you weren’t screwing her sister, you would be” Cesc shot back.

Gerard’s jaw tensed. “What?” he muttered.

“Oh, come on Gerard. If it weren’t for the fact that you are engaged to Immy, then you and I would be on the same side. You’d tell me that I shouldn’t hang around in a relationship that doesn’t make me happy any more” he muttered.

“I would never advise you to cheat on your wife” Gerard snarled “And that has nothing to do with Immy. I know what that feeling is like, Cesc, the feeling of not being good enough, and I would never tell you to inflict that on anyone. You had something wonderful here, Lia and Ella are the best things to happen to you, and you tossed that away without a thought. You deserve to be yelled at and if it wasn’t for the fact that it upsets Immy, then I would have left Lia down here with you. But, as it is, I have to ask you to leave” he muttered.

“Gerard” Cesc protested.

“If you don’t want to leave with a broken nose, I suggest you go” Gerard replied, his voice slightly monotonous.

Cesc scoffed. “If I leave, you and I are done” he muttered.

Gerard looked up at him and sighed. “Adios, Cesc” he muttered, causing the midfielder to scoff and storm out of the room, slamming the door shut.
