We Might Just Be

85: Scared Of Losing You

Smiling a little, Imelda padded up behind the armchair, pressing a little kiss to Gerard’s cheek as he sat ahead of the television, watching it aimlessly. He had been a little quiet, since they had run into James, Gerard had hardly said a word to Imelda, and she wanted to try and stir him a little. She was a little upset that his joking and flirty demeanor had disappeared as soon as he had seen James and she wanted to bring it back. She had been enjoying her day with him until they had spotted the English man and she wanted the brighter and cheerful version of her boyfriend back, not the one who had sat brooding in the living room since they had gotten home. “You know” she murmured, kissing his cheek and jaw gently “My madre isn’t coming back with Theo for another hour. I think we can come up with something a little more interesting to do that to watch that match again” she added, offering him a little grin.

“I am comfortable” Gerard replied, his voice a little flat “I have missed the highlights this week and I want to catch up on how the league is taking shape” he mumbled, his blue eyes not moving to look at her. He knew that it was stupid, James was in Imelda’s past and he was supposedly her future, but still he couldn’t help but be a little irked about it. The way she had hugged and kissed the other man had irked him and, as petty as it was, he wanted Imelda to know it.

Imelda shook her head. “Are you just going to pout or are you going to tell me what is on your mind?” she mumbled, folding herself up in the slight space that was left beside him in the chair.

“You don’t know?” Gerard poked, his voice a little bitter with annoyance.

Imelda scoffed. “You’re seriously pissed about James?” she murmured.

Gerard scoffed. “How would you feel if we ran into one of my exes?” he muttered “Especially one that you look awfully chummy with, Im. You hugged him and shared all these enigmatic smiles and yes, it pissed me off. You’ve never even mentioned the man before” he complained, his eyes settling on Imelda.

Imelda rolled her eyes. “Have you told me about all of your exes?” she poked.

Gerard shook his head. “That is irrelevant” he muttered.

“You’re unbelievable” she muttered “How is it fair that you get to be all grumpy and upset when we see my exes, but the second I mention yours, it is irrelevant?” she hissed before she moved out of the room and up the stairs, slamming the door with a thump that made Gerard flinch in his seat.

It hadn’t been the best thing to say, he knew it the second he had said, but he hadn’t wanted to upset her like he had. He didn’t like it, the way she had been with James had irked him, but hearing the thump of his bedroom door, he knew he needed to find a way to make it up to her. They had never had the talk, other than Antonio and Shakira, their ex partners were still a mystery to the other, and he knew he had to find a way to make to make it better. His upset had ruined their day and he didn’t like the thought for a second, nor did he particularly like the thought that he had possibly made her cry.

Shaking his head, he padded across the room and collected his keys, his mind whirring with ideas that could possibly make things up to her.

“No Gerard?” Gloria mused as she set Theo down in his playpen, her eyes looking around the living room. It was a little odd, from what she had understood, Imelda and Gerard had plans to spend the whole day together and she was a little surprised not to find the defender hanging around. He’d very quickly developed a habit for following Imelda around when they were together.

Imelda shook her head. “We had a bit of a fight” she mumbled “We ran into James earlier and Gerard proceeded to behave like a moron. He got all upset that I had never mentioned James before and then insisted that talking about his exes was a different matter to speaking about mine. I haven’t seen him since” she mumbled, her fingers shyly pushing her dark hair out of her face. She felt a little unsettled, she had heard Gerard drive off not long after she had made her way upstairs, and she was a little concerned. It’d been nearly two hours since he had left and she had no idea where he was.

“James?” Gloria posed “Isn’t he married now?” she added.

Imelda nodded. “He’s got a little girl who’s only a few months older than Theo with his wife who’s just the sweetest girl, but Gerard never quite let me get to that part. I swear, sometimes, he can go all alpha male just because he can” she mumbled.

Gloria shook her head. “It’s sweet that he worries” she commented with a little smile.

“He freaks out” Imelda clarified.

“Only because he loves you so much” Gloria smiled as she cupped her daughter’s cheeks “Immy, Gerard’s possessive and he can be over bearing, but I am sure you would rather have him that way than not caring where you are and who you are with. It’s sweet that he gets all jealous still and whilst he may sometimes go a little far, remember that he only does it because he is scared of losing you, especially to a man like James who could make even the most committed woman swoon” the older woman smiled.

Imelda smiled. “He is kind of sweet” she murmured.

“He’s lovely” Gloria smiled “And make sure you tell him that when he gets back. I have enough daughters dealing with idiots, I don’t need another” she noted.

Imelda nodded. “I will, mama, thanks for looking after Theo for us” she smiled.

Gloria nodded. “Any time, Immy” she grinned before she padded away, allowing Imelda to tend to Theo.

“Im?” Gerard murmured as he stepped into the room, his blue eyes shining a little at the sight of his two favorite people. He had been gone for a while, he wanted to calm down a little before he tried to apologize to Imelda, but just seeing Imelda all snuggled up with Theo as she read him his goodnight story made him smile. He couldn’t quite believe that he had behaved so badly.

Imelda looked up at the sound of his voice and placed a finger to her lips, motioning for him to be quiet. “He’s just gone off” she murmured, gesturing to Theo who was soundly sleeping against her shoulder “Give me a second to put him in bed and I will be out OK?” she pressed. Gerard nodded his head a little and padded back into the hall, Imelda following close behind.

“Where have you been?” she posed gently.

“I went to clear my head, and to buy you these” he mumbled, handing over the neatly tied bouquet of roses that he had picked out. “I was a dick earlier and I wanted to apologize. There’s also some new clothes downstairs that I bought for you” he added.

Imelda shook her head. “You didn’t have to do that” she mumbled.

“I know” he replied “But I was wrong being all accusatory when it came to James and then being so defensive when you asked about what it would be like if our positions were switched. I was an idiot and I am sorry” he mumbled.

Imelda shook her head. “Amor, if you were upset by how I acted around James, you should have just told me” she mused as she set the flowers down onto the side, stepping up to hug him “But just so that you know, James is married to a lovely girl that he met not long after our fling. They have a beautiful little girl who is a little older than Theo” she explained, a small smile on her face.

“He’s married?” Gerard exclaimed.

“Yeah, and you’d have known that if you didn’t get all pouty” Imelda teased.

Gerard shook his head. “You should have opened with that” he mumbled, pulling her back into a hug.

Imelda nodded. “I know” she mused “And I want you to know that even though you can be a pain when you get jealous, I still find it kind of sweet that you worry that much about losing me, but just so that you know, there is no one I would rather be with than you” she smiled, peeking up at him.

Gerard smiled and dipped down a little, kissing her gently. “Good” he muttered “Because you’re stuck with me, and all of my stupid quirks and flaws” he added, a teasing look on his face.

Imelda rolled her eyes, sure that there was nowhere she would rather be.
