We Might Just Be

87: This Time Tomorrow

“Remind me why we have to do this?” Gerard mumbled as he stood behind Imelda, his blue eyes staring up at the restaurant that had been booked for their final meal together before the wedding. It had passed quickly, the month that stood between them and the big day, and Gerard found himself a little nervous. He was in no doubt, with Imelda and Theo was where he wanted to spend the rest of his life, but the idea of getting through the ceremony the following day scared him slightly, as did the thought of spending a needless night away from his wife-to-be. He missed her when they were apart and hated the idea that they had to spend almost 24 hours apart, something which Lionel, who had replaced Cesc as best man, had stressed that he was going to enforce.

“Because it is a nice way to celebrate” Imelda noted “And because if we didn’t, my parents would have invaded the house, something I know you would have hated” she added, offering him a gentle smile.

“I don’t hate your parents” he commented “But I do sometimes wish that they would back down, I swear, if your mother tries to give me advice for the wedding night…”

“I have pre-warned them” Imelda interjected, shaking her head a little “They have promised to be on their best behavior tonight and tomorrow” she added, fixing her dress a little.

Gerard smiled and dropped a kiss on her cheek. “Is it weird that we are getting married tomorrow?” he murmured.

“Incredibly” Imelda breathed gently “But it’s a good kind of weird. This time tomorrow, you’ll be my husband” she mused as she turned to face him, a small smile playing at the corner of her mouth. Gerard smiled at the sight of it and ducked down to kiss her, only to be pulled back by Lionel who, along with Antonella, had been sent out to collect the happy couple by two sets of increasingly irritated parents.

“You’ll have plenty of time for that when all is said and done” Lionel muttered “But right now, I have been informed that I must get you inside. Imelda’s mother is starting to get a little tipsy and I don’t know how much longer she will remain polite for” he mused.

Gerard sighed. “I thought you told them to behave?” he mumbled as he took Imelda’s hand, following after the other couple.

Imelda nodded. “I did. I never said they were going to do it” she mused, an innocent smile on her face.

Gerard rolled his eyes. He just wanted to get the night over with.

“Look at you” Gloria grinned as she pinched Imelda’s cheek. It was starting to get a little late, after dinner, the group had relocated to a small bar which wasn’t too far from Imelda’s parents’ home, and Gloria was starting to get a little drunk, something which had led to Gerard keeping his distance from her. He liked his future mother-in-law, but not when she was tipsy and not when she couldn’t stop herself from babbling a little inappropriately.

Imelda smiled. “Hola, mama” she cooed.

“I cannot believe that you are getting married” Gloria exclaimed.

Imelda smiled. “It is a strange thought” she commented shyly “But I like it as an idea and I like it even more when I look at him” she commented, her green eyes wandering to Gerard who was talking animatedly with Lionel. Gloria followed the line of her stare and shook her head.

“Can I confess something to you?” she murmured.

Imelda nodded. “Sure, mama” she mused.

“I never thought you would find a husband” Gloria whispered “I thought Antonio had ruined you for all other men. I mean, you went out with James, but it was all about the sex with you two and I worried that was all you would ever want, someone who’s pants you could get into whenever you had the need, but then you met him” Gloria mused, a small smile appearing on her face as she turned her eyes back to Gerard “And suddenly, I couldn’t see anything else for you” she smiled.

Imelda shook her head. “I never thought we would get here” she confessed gently “Thinking back to how shy I was when I met him at first, I was sure he would find someone else before I ever mustered the courage to ask him out” she mumbled.

“Well, thankfully, he didn’t” Gloria cooed “And now my little girl is going to have a husband. Congratulations, Immy” she smiled sincerely.

Imelda blushed and moved to hug her mother before Gerard padded over to them, a slightly nervous look on his face. “Leo’s going to take me home. I’ll pick Theo up from the babysitter and then I will call you later to say goodnight. Is that alright?” he mumbled, fiddling with his shirt.

Imelda nodded. “It’s fine” she cooed.

Gerard nodded his head. “I guess, I will see you tomorrow afternoon” he mumbled. Imelda smiled. She could practically hear the pout in his voice.

“There is no need to mope” she teased as she placed her hands on his shoulders.

“It’s over 12 hours from now” Gerard replied “Twelve hours without kisses or hugs. God knows how I am going to cope with Theo” he huffed.

“You’ll be just fine. That boy adores you” she smiled, brushing his hair out of his face.

“I’m going to miss you” he mumbled, resting his head against hers.

“You’re being dramatic” Imelda commented, smiling slightly.

Gerard chuckled gently and pulled her into a light kiss. “I am always dramatic, it is why you love me so very much” he commented.

Imelda nodded. “I will see you tomorrow, Gerard” she cooed gently “I love you, I will miss you and I cannot wait until tomorrow comes” she breathed.

Gerard smiled. “Neither can I” he murmured. “I will see you at the altar, querida” he smiled.

Imelda nodded. “I will see you then” she mused gently before she pecked his lips, allowing him to move back towards Lionel who escorted him from the building.

Imelda watched after him and smiled. It was still a strange thought that they would be married by that time the next day.
