I'm the Last One That You'll Ever Remember

Chapter 132: Does Kobra Know?

Gerard's jaw dropped as his combat boots sagged and fell like an anchor onto the grass below his swing with a thud. He could hardly believe what Sable just confessed to him. Everything from her trespassing onto his family's property and breaking into their home had been leading up to this?! “You're...pregnant!?”

“Um...y-yeah.” Sable returned back in a wobbly voice, her eyes fixated on her own combat boots manufactured with a heel. “I think I'm pregnant.”

Battling to register her announcement, Gerard blinked several times, his light brown eyes combing his backyard aimlessly as he tried to force her statement to sink in. She was pregnant? But how? “How do you know for sure? Have you taken a...pregnancy test yet?”

Sable nodded. “I did take a test.”

“And?” Gerard found himself demanding quite carelessly. His denial must run much deeper within him than he thought for him to still be interrogating. “What did it say?”

“It confirmed what I'm telling you, Poison!” Sable snapped impatiently, then rolled her eyes at his denial. “It verified that I'm 100% pregnant!”

Taking a deep breath, Gerard began to back off now that it was beginning to immerse in. “So, you don't think you're pregnant, you ARE pregnant.”

“Yeah...I guess.” Sable mumbled, shaking her head to herself as she took continued to fight to accept the major news. “I don't know, man.”

“What do you mean 'you don't know'? What do you not know?” Gerard grilled, his eyes locked on her face.

“What I mean is, I don't know what I'm gonna do about it!” Sable whined, concealing her face with a hand. This was just too much to talk about. It was tough at first when it was just her that knew about it, but talking to Poison was even tougher. “God, this is just a mess.”

Gerard had to ask, because the missing part of this marvel was not present in his family's backyard in the middle of the night. “Does Kobra know?”

“HELL NO!” Sable half-shouted, rotating towards him with a look of horror on her face. “Have you lost your mind?! I can't tell him about this!?”

“Why the fuck not?” Gerard contended, not seeing her reasoning as anything but logic. “You'll tell me over your own baby daddy? Why!?”

“Because I don't know how Michael is going to react, Gerard!” Sable blurted, launching up from the swing to pace in front of him. “I can admit that as close as it may seem I am to your brother, because we're fucking all the time, I genuinely don't know how he's gonna take this shit, and that terrifies the absolutely shit out of me!”

Looking down at his combat boots, Gerard tried to visualize how his little brother would take the announcement of being a first time father. It soon became impossible for him to resolve, because Kobra wasn't Michael, and he'd known Kobra longer than he ever got to know Michael because he was compelled to grow up too quick for Gerard's sake. Shaking the remorse of that from his shoulders, Gerard ran a hand through his vivid crimson hair. “I wish I could help you there, but...I don't have a single clue as to how Kobra would react either.”

“I was worried you'd say that.” Sable halted directly in front of him with sudden aspiration in her eye as she snapped her fingers. “Hold on! Have you two ever in life talked about having a family of your own? You know, your own kids?”

Gerard caught himself opening his mouth to tell her that he actually had kids of his own before slamming it shut. He couldn't entrust her with that information yet. Not until Frank was ready. “Only to agree that that family stuff wasn't for us when we stopped to consider our new murdering lifestyle.”

Whimpering in sorrow, Sable spun away from him to shroud her face with both hands. Emotions were festering up inside her and threatening to spew over, threatening her self-restraint. “Oh, god!”

Surging from the swing, Gerard ditched his seat to rub a consoling hand up and down her back. “Hey, don't do that, okay? Don't go crying on me just yet. I'm sure everything is gonna work out fine soon enough.”

Sickened by his feigned comforting words, Sable spun back around and smacked his hands off of her, her brown eyes flaring fire. “Everything is gonna be fine?! How the fuck is everything going to be fine when the man I'm in love with doesn't give a damn about me, and thus won't give a damn about our baby!?”

“That's not true, Masika!” Gerard championed his brother. “Michael does care about you!”

“Oh right!” Sable belittled sarcastically, placing her hands on her hips. “And you of all people would know that how?”

“He's my brother.” Gerard reminded her with a glare. “Duh!”

Shaking her head at him, Sable studied the murderer she knew as Poison over. “Somehow I doubt that you know Kobra as well as you think you do. He used to swear behind your back that you would never experience love yourself because of how you turned out. Now look at you. You're not even the same person anymore, are you?”

Appointing to change the subject, Gerard sighed. “So what are you gonna do about your situation, Sable?”

“I don't know.” Sable shrugged, staring down at her boots.

“Might I suggest you start by telling Kobra?” Gerard proposed.

“Man please, I'd sooner disappear right on out of there like you did and leave the Killjoys for good before I ever tell your brother.” Sable renounced with a shake of her head.

“Are you seriously considering that?” Gerard demanded, not prepared to allow that to be an option whatsoever. “Just dropping out of sight one day without a word?”

“N-No, I'm just being over dramatic right now.” Sable sighed, rubbing a hand over her face. She hesitated for a long time before giving him what he wanted to hear. “I'll tell Kobra about the baby the next time I see him.”

“Good.” Gerard nodded before the father in him stepped forward to embrace her in a astonishing hug. He felt her stiffen against him then enveloped him back. “I'm proud of you, Masika.”

“Can I just take the time to point out how weird it is that you're proud of me?” Sable giggled against his chest. “Cause you're usually the heartless one and now you're acting like an actual human being by hugging me.”

“Well, you better get used to it because I'm human now.” Gerard playfully hinted to her as he let her go.

“Is it because of Black Opal?” Sable inquired politely.

Gerard nodded, not the least bit bashful. “That it is.”
