I'm the Last One That You'll Ever Remember

Chapter 143: Get To Her Today, Not Tomorrow!

Sprinting towards the motel building they sighted Masika entering, both of the Way brothers tore up the stairs towards Room 3. Upon reaching it, Mikey stepped back in preparation to boot her door down without a single concern as to how she would meet such an unforeseen imposition. “Step back, Gerard!”

“Not a chance!” Gerard snapped before grasping a hold of his little brother just in time to thwart him from crashing the door down. “Am I allowing you to tear down the goddamn door!”

With a growl, Mikey powerfully ripped himself out of his brother’s hold to oppose him. He was bristling with resentment as he demanded explanation. “And why the fuck not!? I need to get to her today, not tomorrow!”

“Do I need to remind you where we are?” Gerard reminded, outstretching his arms to suggest their surroundings. When that didn’t minimize his brother’s temper, he illustrated further. “We’re in a PUBLIC motel which means there isn’t just us and Masika here. If you kick down the door it’s only going to entice unwanted scrutiny, maybe even the owner themselves which means the cops will inevitably be following not too far behind!”

“Sonofabitch!” Mikey cursed, running both hands through his hair in hectic consideration. A second later, a light bulb went off in his head. Vigorously fixing his hair and rectifying his clothes, he stepped forward and raised his fist to knock on the door instead.

Reaching out with lightning speed, Gerard seized a hold of Mikey’s wrist before he could make contact with the door. “Hold on, what the hell are you doing?”

Mikey just about had it as he wrung his arm away and growled at his big brother. “What now!?”

“Need I remind you again that Masika didn’t trust you enough to notify you that she was pregnant with your baby a few days ago?” Gerard recounted, rolling his eyes at how foolish his brother seemed to be functioning tonight. Did he really think knocking on the door was going to work on a damaged Killjoy such as Masika?

“So?” Mikey snapped, growing critically close to losing his temper on his brother. His fists were already clenched and ready to go down. “What does that have to do with anything?”

Needing to roll his eyes again, Gerard spelled it out for him. “What makes you think she’s going to open the door to your pleasant face after all that’s befallen between you two already?”

Absolutely detesting that he had a point, Mikey stepped back with another curse and signaled with a finger to his brother’s chest then towards the door. “Then you open the fucking door since she entrusts your angelic ass so fucking much!”

Gerard regarded as his grumbling sibling stood aside to lean his back against the wall away from the sight of the peephole so he wouldn’t be seen at all. Taking a deep breath as he was about to deceive his closest friend in order to help his brother, Gerard raised his fist to knock on the door. He gave it a minute, knowing she wouldn’t answer right away, but would be listening. “Masika, it’s me. Poison.”

Masika faltered in replying, her brows furrowing suspiciously at the familiar voice of her baby daddy’s brother. She felt like hell draped in nothing but a snug tracksuit, her eyes throbbing from incessant hours of crying, her cheeks damp, her full lips cracked and dry. Yet and still she wondered to herself why Gerard was there? Stepping closer to the door with dual daggers in both hand, she examined him alone through the peephole and hailed out to him. “Why are you here?”

“Mikey called me and told me you went missing.” Gerard responded back sincerely, his eyes glued to the door and away from his brother who stood impatiently out of view beside him. “I tracked you down to make sure that you were alright.”

“I am.” Masika reassured him, then closed her eyes as she depress her voice to whisper in hopes she might convince herself of that too. “I’m alright.”

“Forgive me if I don’t believe you. I’d rather see for myself that you’re telling me the truth.” Gerard dismissed delicately. “Can you open the door and let me in?”

Hesitating, Masika weighed over his request. Should she let him in? As much as she trusted him, something in her stomach didn’t feel right, and she wasn’t sure if the reason was because she just had an abortion. Her eyes saturated with tears at the mental reminder of the operation she had to endure on her own to expire the life of something she wanted so badly but was too frightened to do alone. “I...I don’t know if I should be doing that, Gee. I don’t think I have the energy in me.”

But he had to get her to open the door, his brother and himself were counting on him. Frowning, Gerard began to clamber through his mind for anything that would make her open the door. What arose was the plain and mundane savage nature that was once as instilled in him like breathing. Giving her a nod, Gerard held up his hands and stepped back from the door, avoiding Mikey’s eyes enlarging with horror because he concluded he was backing out on him. “Fine, if you don’t want to open the door, I get it. However if you don’t make an endeavor to at least try in the next 5 seconds I won’t be responsible for surmounting off this ledge behind me and shanking the guy below that was hitting on you about five minutes ago. I’m just saying.”

“WHAT, NO!?” Masika uttered in dread. She couldn’t believe Gerard would threaten to do something so treacherous as butchering an innocent human being, that’s just not what the Killjoys did. Then again, this wouldn't be the first time he threatened to do something like this and actually went through with it so Masika didn’t really have any other choice other than to comply. With a groan, she began to unlock the door. “Alright, give me a minute!”

Steeling himself, Mikey rectified himself as the bolts on the door were unraveled. As soon as the door swiveled open he was cutting the corner and barrelling on inside without permit. He heard Masika let out a sharp gasp at the appearance of him before she began to backtrack deeper into her room, but he snagged her by her upper arms and steered her backwards carefully. He sensed Gerard coming in right after him and heard him secure the locks on the door to give them privacy.

Masika managed to recapture her self-control after being hurtled into a state of shock at the vision of Mikey, and jerked herself out of his grip. She noticed Gerard leaning against the motel door with his arms over his chest, regarding them intently probably with the purpose of mediatoring this conversation that she vowed would never take place just so long as she remained unknown. Panting heavily, she glared at her baby daddy, the same man that had shattered her heart the night before yesterday. “What the fuck is Mikey doing here, Gerard?! You said it was just you!”

Gerard didn’t counter, nor did Mikey. He merely stood there gawking at her for a long time as she draped her arms protectively around herself. It hadn’t even been a week since he last saw her, but it sure felt that way. Her long voluminous curly hair was frizzy and bedraggled, her big brown eyes bloodshot, and her cheeks streaked with fresh tear tracks. She was breathtaking. She’d always been breathtaking. She never once ceased swiping his breath right out of his lungs by the sheer sight of her. Would all her future children have had that same impression on others when they grew up, Mikey marvelled to himself before frowning in reminiscence. Her children? Their baby! Swallowing again the lump in his throat that wasn’t there before, Mikey had to ask just to be sure. “Did you really go through with it?”

Brown orbs hurtling between both brothers, a glare for Gerard for forsaking her so fiercely by delivering his brother to her. Mikey's query was directed at only one thing, and now that the limelight was put on her she couldn’t fall back and play dumb. Straightening herself up, she gazed away from the both of them as she spun halfway from them. Summoning up what little lingering tenacity she had left, she confessed the truth. “I did...I-I had the abortion.”

“Oh god…” Mikey managed to say before twisting away from her as well, not being able to stomach it. He ran his hands through his hair as her words plummeted into his soul only to drive tears up to the surface. He swallowed several times and blinked his tears back. It was one thing to hear from nurses and a doctor himself that the operation had been completed, but to hear it from his lover was like putting the nail on the coffin. There was no opposing she had done it, she had gotten an abortion on their baby.

While his brother strove to compose himself again, Gerard, who had been observant of them both, spotted that Masika was swaying on her feet. His eyes extended with alarm as he hollered out to his little brother who was the closest to her. “MICHAEL!”
