I'm the Last One That You'll Ever Remember

Chapter 203: His Husband's Judgment

That night, Frank couldn’t find sleep in any position his body posed in. Despite being physically tired, his mind was alive with activity and replaying his argument with Gerard about his brother over and over again. It was driving him crazy until he decided to resign seeking sleep and get up out of bed.

Softly pulling his pajamas back over his naked body, Frank nearly gasped when he heard one of his twin newborns begin to cry from the crib near his bed. As he hurried to the crib to scoop the tiny baby up in his arms, his husband jerking awake behind on the bed caught his attention from the corner of his eyes.

Glancing over his shoulder at the barely conscious man he’d made love to before bed for the deceit he told their kids in order to save their butts, Frank whispered out to him. “Hey, it’s okay. Go back to sleep, baby, I got them.”

Languidly lowering himself back onto the plush bed, Gerard groggily murmured out. “You sure?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.” Frank assured him with a trustworthy smile that his husband couldn’t see in the dark as he picked up the second newborn that was becoming fussy with each passing minute.

“Mmm kay.” Gerard yawned before plummeting down into the sea of comforters and falling back asleep in seconds.

Taking both crying twins downstairs, Frank placed both Marcella and Ophelia into their individual rocking chairs with a pacifier popped in their mouths while he sped into the kitchen to fix their bottles up. The pacifiers didn’t help to distract them while he was away though and both fell out of their mouths as the babies cried in sync with one another. Frank ignored it to focus on the bottles and once they were made, silenced both of their hungers once and for all by popping each in their mouths.

Sitting on his behind in front of their rocking chairs, Frank observed them both ravenously drink from their bottles while quietly swinging them back to sleep. Instead of returning his little mermaid and fairy back upstairs, Frank prolonged their departure to remain in the living room in silence. Rising from the floor, he set the bottles on a side table to curl himself up on the couch, his hazel eyes locking onto the sleeping babies.

Frank’s active mind flew back to his blowup with Gerard earlier that night. They had managed to convince the kids that they were pretending to argue in order to dash their worries away, and were successful. But now that his family were all tucked away in their own beds, and he was alone, Frank got to privately replaying it all over again in the dim light of a solitary lamp.

Gerard wanted him to meet up with his brother so they could come together as a full family?

Stubbornly Frank remembered restricting the subject from ever being spoken of again in their household, but the things Gerard told him about his brother had him second guessing his prompt decision. Gerard had said his brother was a legit victim of the Killjoy group. An innocent young child with his big older brother at his side, and no one else. They were the only two left of the Way family and only had each other. But his big brother had…issues. He had a thirst for blood. Not wishing to lose him too and be alone in the world, Michael trained himself to become the monster his brother was born to be.

If Michael was really the innocent one here, did that mean he could be trusted with their lives?

With entering into their beautiful, warm, loving home?

With their children’s lives?

Imploring himself to discount the time Michael had actually busted into their home over his missing pregnant girlfriend, Frank tried to look at this idea with a stark neutral mindset as if he had no part in this affair whatsoever. Not that it was easy for him to do considering their history so far.

Was Frank able to literally open the doors of his home to welcome Michael Way, Leader of the Killjoys, into his life?

An icy shudder raced through Frank’s entire body, making him shake his head in defiance to the notion. No, he couldn’t possibly allow that man access into his home, to his family! If something were to happen to his family, the fault would solely be put on his shoulder for endangering them in the first place. Yes, this would be at Gerard’s pleading, but it would be his final word that put the nail in all their coffins. Only…Frank was positive that if Gerard were with him right now he’d ask why he couldn’t give his brother a second chance for a new beginning.

What was it other than their obvious past that made Frank not want to give Michael a second chance?

Could it be because he was the leader of a band of murdering psychopaths?

It had to be! Michael, alone, kept an entire group of mentally-disturbed precarious killers from freely running loose and decimating thousands of people for the sick pleasure of doing so. But one could say that that same group of murderers was exacly where his husband came from and how they met in the first place.

Gerard was different in his eyes though, and it wasn’t because he was deliriously in love with the man. No, the older man had made a drastic life-changing transformation for him so he could become just like the ordinary citizens of society. He had taken strides to change himself for their love and his children.

Could the same thing happen to Michael?

Would he too change his way upon meeting his nieces and nephews, or would he be unfazed by them and return home to a life of murder and torture like they’re nothing to him?

Sadly, Frank couldn’t know for certain. He never got the chance to get to know Michael to have that answer. But considering the circumstances at the time, he wouldn't have wanted to if the opportunity had presented itself anyway. The man was the King of a band of killers! Hell no did he want to befriend him and exchanged numbers to text if and when everything had blown over in the end! Frank wanted to get as far away as he could from those freaks! Including his husband at the time.

Gerard still trusted his brother despite the changes he's made to conform to an normal life which is probably to be expected since they’re brothers. Though he was no longer a killer, Gerard’s mind hasn't changed towards his young sibling who was still a killer. He only saw him as his kid brother.

Was it stupid for Gerard to still trust Michael after all this time?

Was his brother the type of person to stab him in the back?

If so, Gerard never mentioned it. In fact he’s only claimed his brother was a victim and always looked out for him from the start. When it came to the other members of the Killjoys, however, it didn’t seem Gerard had much to say about them. He never defended them when Frank called them monsters and such. That made him believe that Gerard didn’t trust them at all. Frank was glad he didn’t. If not, then he’d seriously be doubting his husband’s judgment right now…

Well, technically, he already was doubting his judgment.

With a weary sigh, Frank leaned his head back on the couch to stare up at the ceiling. He loved Gerard more than life itself. He’d die for the once cherry-headed man without a moment’s hesitation even with having kids. Probably would kill for him too without a second’s thought to prove it. Hell, he’d take over the whole damn planet if that meant Gerard would love him just a little bit more than yesterday!

My god, he didn’t sound any better than those fiendish Killjoys!

Still, whenever Frank thought of the possibility of losing Gerard to his Killjoy family, he had to fight from ripping his own hair out from his scalp. The thought stressed him out! It always made him wish he had the power to make them all vanish so he could selfishly keep his husband with him forever.

Biting his lower lip, Frank pondered on what would happen if he didn’t agree to meet up with Gerard’s brother, or accept him into the family at all. With how passionately his husband felt about this whole idea, there had to be some form of consequence to it, right?

Oh no. What kind of consequence could there be?

Becoming sick to his stomach with dread, Frank decided he needed to know what the ramifications would be. He had to ask Gerard in order to find out. But not now while he was sleeping. Perhaps tomorrow, he’ll stop by his job to see him for lunch. Then…maybe then he’ll ask.
