I'm the Last One That You'll Ever Remember

Chapter 229: Could There Be A Connection?

Upon realizing that her life was about to be snuffed out, Masquerade’s head snapped up to stare into the face of Poison, a man she heard so much about but had yet to make the final connection. Due to the finality of the situation, it didn’t really matter who this man was. What mattered was what he was about to do to her. Lips trembling, she attempted to plead for mercy, her body rolling over from its side to its back as she shot her hands up in the air to keep him away. “N-No! No, please! Don’t kill me! DON’T!”

Ignoring her desperate pleas for her life, Poison dropped himself down on top of Masquerade, and began to stab her in with his bowie knives in as many places as he could reach. He delighted in the girl’s screams as she proceeded to beg for her life in between blood-curdling shrieks of agony until she finally succumbed to her multiple incurable injuries. Bloody, Poison gradually got his feet again to stare down at the mutilated body that was his work of art. He didn’t get to selfishly appreciate his craft before the double door that led into the back of the gas station at the end of the main aisle burst open unexpectedly. Not considering that there might be more CopyCat Killjoys exploring in the back there, Poison leapt off of Masquerade's expired body with both of his knives whirling in hand as he rotated about to face his next opponent. He was ready for battle, but found that he didn’t need to be. Stumbling through the back door was a giant man. He had to be 7 feet tall! Lurching back from this towering man with the mask of Frankenstein, Poison quickly spotted riding up on his shoulder with both her legs and arms wrapped securely on the giant’s neck was Masika herself. Needing to let her know that he was there to her rescue, Poison shouted out her codename as he maneuvered out of the giant’s long reach, his overprotective eyes locked on the woman fastened on his shoulder. “SABLE!”

Masika lifted her head at the glorious sound of Poison’s voice. Her smudged cheeks had trails of tears down them, but despite the misery in her eyes, she flashed her future brother-in-law a brief greeting smile. “Hey there! Just hold on for a second for me, okay?”

Glancing up at the various skinny metal beams over her head that ran across the ceiling, Masika reached up for one to grab a tight hold on, and with her legs, used all her strength to snap this giant’s neck. It took longer than she liked, but almost three minutes later she heard the bone snapped before she loosened her legs and let the man she dubbed Goliath fall to the ground. Because she was still hanging on to the beam, she called out to Poison for some assistance. “A little help here?”

Running up to the spot directly under her just in time, Poison was there with open arms to catch her when she fell. As soon as she was securely in his arms, he embraced her, both of their hearts seeming to race as one after what they’d both been through to get to one another. “Mikey.”

“Mikey.” Masika said at the exact same time as Poison they pulled apart to look at each other. It would seem their minds were in the same exact places as well. Masika’s brown eyes wide and frantic as they searched Poison’s behind his mask. Her fingers were claws on his leather jacket even as he gently lowered her steadily back on her feet. “Where is he? Was he not out here with you?”

Poison shook his head forlornly. He wished his brother had been here. He wished he had gotten out. Considering the fact that Poison found Masika here alone, that must mean his brother was still back there with the Killjoys. “No. It was just me. Me and these Killjoys.”

“They’re NOT Killjoys!” Masika snapped at him too aggressively. She instantly regretted it with her whole heart. It wasn’t Poison’s fault this happened. Placing a hand on her stomach where her baby grew, she expanded further in a more respectful tone. “Trust me. I have seen the new recruits and none of these dead assholes are any of them!”

For some reason, what Masika said conjured up the memory of the two CopyCat Killjoys Poison had to eliminate on Halloween night while he was out taking his twins trick-or-treating.

Could there be a connection?

That was a mystery Poison would have to figure out another time. Setting his hands on Masika’s shoulder, he made her look him right in the eye just to be sure she was there. She had to be in tip-top shape in order for the next leg of their journey. “Hey, you sure you’re okay? They didn't hurt you?”

“No, damn you, I’m not alright!” Masika cried out, her voice cracking tearfully as she smacked his hands away so she could pace around, kicking any of the dead bodies that dared to be lying in her path. Her hands curled and uncurled at her side as her brown eyes darted everywhere. She was becoming hysterical inside and it was about to start bubbling over. “I’m fucking sick to death of running away and hiding when all I want is to go back out there and find my fucking man! I have to save him from those murderous motherfuckers! WE have to save him from those murderous motherfuckers!”

When Masika finally broke down into sobs, covering her face with both hands, Poison stepped in to console her with a light hug just in case she tried to swing on him. “And we will as soon as you get a hold of yourself, Masika. I don’t need your help in this, I need Sable right now. Give me Sable!”

“Guys!? Kitty Mitty, Mardi, Kitty Witty, Goliath! Anybody there?” A voice called out from outside likely belonging to the only remaining survivor Poison dubbed Bubblegum.

Both Masika and Poison’s head shot up in the same direction, their ears perked to any sound coming from the girl outside. Narrowing her eyes at the entryway, Masika stated the obvious. “You missed one.”

“I had to.” Poison whispered, his light brown eyes locked on the exit too. He was certain the girl wouldn’t enter the gas station, he didn’t know how he knew it, he just did, and so he stayed standing in the open with Masika. “I didn’t know where you were at the time or what they were doing to you.”

“How close?” Masika asked him, waiting for his response. She didn’t exactly scope the place out when she was hiding there. She stayed covered and focused on keeping herself and her baby alive and out of sight until Poison arrived and annihilated everyone for her.

“Not close enough to reach in time before she hops into one of those cars and escapes.” Poison answered, relaying the exact position he left Bubblegum in.

“Fuck!” Masika cursed, wishing that the final target was in closer proximity so they could easily and swiftly get the jump on her and finally put an end to the night. Glancing at Poison with her hands on her hips, she demanded him for a plan. “What should we do now then?”

“Seems to me like we have two approaches here.” Poison began to list, his eyes trailing to her to gauge her feelings towards their options. “You can play the bait so I can come up behind her and kill her…OR we can give her a major scare that’ll have her running back to her boss with a report that we have killed every single one of their pathetic groupies.”

“I prefer the ‘gut her like a fish’ plan if I gotta to be honest.” Masika elected, nodding in full support, but then frowned at him. “But something tells me Kobra would let her go running back to her boss.”

“Yes, that is a very Kobra thing to do.” Poison agreed, nodding to himself. Personally for him his preferences were always the opposite to his brothers.

“But if we let her go, they might send more of them after us.” Masika began to ponder, her voice trailing away as her frown deepened to a profound level of concern for her defenseless baby.

“Fuck that! I can’t have that happen!” Poison growled, baring his teeth like an overprotective lion. “I have a family.”

“Bait it is then.” Masika decided before moving their plan into motion. She took off running in a mad dash for the entryway but as she burst through the doorway she switched into a pitiful vulnerable limp. Her direction was towards the barren main road, her screams a stuttering croak of cry for help as she limped away at an almost snail pace that a baby could catch up to. But of course that was all part of the plan. “S-SOMEONE! PLEASE, HELP ME! A-ANYBODY, PLEASE!”

“HEY, YOU!” Bubblegum shouted at Masika before taking out her blade and charging at the limping woman with it poised high in the air. From inside the entryway of the gas station, Poison reared back his arm and aimed his bowie knife precisely at her, calculating the perfect timing. When he saw it, he shot his arm forward and hurled his blade at the back of Bubblegum’s neck.

Before Bubblegum could touch Masika, she was impaled by the blade in her neck and instantly died before she ever hit the ground. Turning around to look down at her body, Masika smiled in victory. “Nice throw! But we should probably get out of here now before someone sees us.”

“I still got it.” Poison mumbled proudly to himself as he retrieved his blade from his target and cleaned it off on her denim jacket. Glancing at Masika, he gave her a nod. “Follow me. My car is parked over there.”
