Her Reflection
Scene 1
SETTING:
The playground is crowded with children. Laughter is heard. A huge oak sits at the back of the playground to the left, and a swing set sits at the back to the right.
AT RISE:
JABARI pulls up to the playground and parks in the parking lot. INA is about to take off. JABARI tells her something important before she does.
JABARI
Ina, before you run off with your friends, I have an announcement. You might’ve heard me mention her a few times, but you never met her. I’m…I’m…I’m getting married!
(INA doesn’t respond.)
You’re going to have a new mother! Isn’t that great?
INA
(Shrugs.)
Sure…I guess.
JABARI
(Sighs.)
Ina, it’s not right for an 8 year-old girl to go 3 years without a mother. It’s just not right.
(INA doesn’t respond.)
Well, her name is Diane Swanson and she’ll be coming to the park soon. You’re going to love her, I know it!

Ok, daddy.
(JABARI gets out of the car and sits on a bench.)
