Now You See Me, Now You Don't

A Stone for a Substitute

For me it was a completely average, boring is more like it, day. I woke up, put on a fresh pair of clothes (with some help from auntie),ate breakfast, attempted to tame my wild locks, brushed my crooked teeth, and left for school with my eye stick in hand. Yes, it certainly was a normal day. That all changed at the end of the day during my last, and favorite, class, German language. I loved the German language because my father was from Germany.

I, hopefully, took his usual seat in the front of the class. When the bell rang, signaling classes have started, I heard the door open. That's strange, Mrs. Comb is always waiting INSIDE the classroom. Next, I heard the sound of a man clearing his throat. Then the sound suddenly had a voice, " My name is Mr. Stone. I am filling in for Mrs. Comb, ja?" His voice was quiet, but loud, calm, yet jittery. A substitute? My heart rate started to quicken, he sounded like he accualy was a German man. Mrs. Comb was American, but was still fluent in the language.

"Gut? Gut. Now I vill take attendance. Does anyone know how to say zhat in German?" The voice spoke again. My hand instantly shot up. "You. Tell me." I wasn't sure if 'you' meant me or someone else. Just in case, I stayed quiet. After a short moment, everyone burst out in high pitched laughter. "Quiet every one! Vhat's wrong?" The voice was right next to me now. I knew he was talking to me. "I didn't know you chose me. I can't see, I'm blind." I explained quickly and quietly. I heard the man make a thoughtful noise. "Alright then, Vhat is your name?" "Darious, my name is Darious Brown." I answered him.

Another thoughtful sound came from the man, Mr. Stone. "I like zhat name, I like it alot. Tell me Darious, vhat is Attendance in German?" I smiled, what an easy question. "Teilnehmerzahl." I said hopefully. Mr. Stone chuckled. "Correct. Now tell me, Darious, can you translate zhis into English? 'Wir treffen uns nach dem Unterricht'" I thought for a while, thinking the phrase over in my mind. When I finally translated it my face flushed, 'Meet me after class'. What does he want? Am I in trouble with the substitute already? "Ich verstehe, aber ich möchte nicht, es laut zu sagen." I whispered to Mr. Stone.

He made a surprised grunting noise. "Alright Darious. Did anyone else understand our conversation?" I don't think anyone understood. I was top of my class, I was almost completely fluent. I nearly jumped out of my seat when the bell rang.
