Fifteen

Monday, it was back to the office. I arrived early but Gerard arrived earlier. I greeted Magee before heading back into the office, dropping my things off at my desk before heading into Gerards office with his coffee. "You're here early." I greeted him as I walked over to his desk to hand him his coffee.

"I had something to take care of." He half-assed explained. "How was your weekend?" He asked, changing subjects.

"Great! I had a ton of fun which, sadly, ended so soon."

"Weekends are never long enough. Don't forget next Monday is a holiday so we don't need to come in to the office."

I knitted my brow together in confusion, "Monday? What's Monday?"

Realization of me being a foreigner set in, "It's May Day."

I smiled, "May Day... What happen to March Day or April Day? Is there a June Day?" I questioned, half jokingly and half serious. I seriously wanted to know if those days exist.

"The first Monday in May is a Spring Bank Holiday, May Day." He explained.

I nodded, "Cool, I'm down. If you say not to come to work I'm not going to argue."

"You shouldn't argue with your boss, period."

I rolled my eyes, "When Hell freezes over."

He smiled and held a small piece of paper to me which I grabbed. On the sheet of paper were names scribbled in Gerards beautiful hand writing. "I'm having a small get together at my place in three weeks and those," He gestured to the sheet of paper, "are the people I want you to personally invite."

"Um... when you say personally invite--"

"By phone." He finished. "And when you get to it," he held out a beige folder which I took, "take this down to publishing."

I nodded, "Alright. Is that it?"

"For now."

I was just out Gerards door when I remembered I forgot something. I peeked back into Gerards office, "Oh, Gerard?" He looked up from his work, curious. "Thanks for Saturday." I told him with a smile.

Thursday I found out that Gerard and a few others were going to Paris next weekend. Lucky bastards. I've always wanted to go to the city of love. I sighed as I clicked away on my computer, waiting for Gerard to either give me something to do or tell me to go home. I had already finished all my assignments today. The phone rang so I quickly grabbed it, "Gerard Butler's office."

"Miss Chapman, this is Miguel." Miguel is Gerard's driver... this is the first time he's called. I wonder why. "Could you pass a message on to Mister Butler for me."

"Sure thing."

"Tell him that someone has arrived at his house."

"Who?" I asked interested and a little bit nosy.

"He will know what I'm talking about."

Not expecting that answer, I frowned, "Uh... okay. I'll go tell him right now."

"Thank you."

I hung up the phone and entered Gerard's office. He looked up from his work, "Yes?"

"Miguel called."

That sparked his interest, "And?" He asked, sitting up straighter in his seat.

"I don't know. All he said was that someone was at your place." I told him shrugging.

"Excellent." He proclaimed as he picked up the phone and started dialing a number.

I wanted to ask but decided against it. It was probably some chick he was getting together with or something. I didn't want him stating the fact that I was jealous, so I just nodded and left his office. About ten minutes after, Gerard came out of his office. "I have a surprise for you." He marveled, walking over to my desk with his hands clasped together.

"Gerard, me having to do your work isn't a surprise anymore."

He chuckled, "Actually, this surprise is different. Consider it a late birthday gift."

That grabbed my attention, "Really?" I asked, off-guard. I didn't even know he was capable of such a thing.

He nodded, "Yes..." he hesitated, "but it's at my place."

My smile fell as I rolled my eyes, "I'll pass, perv."

"Okay, I know what you're thinking but, honestly, it's not what you think." He tried to explain.

"Then what is it?"

He opened his mouth about to tell me the truth but then closed it, "...I can't tell you. I have to show you for you to be even remotely surprised."

I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned back in my chair, "Either you tell me or you can forget it."

He sighed heavily, "You can be so stubborn!" He paused, "What if I move your gift to a public place? Say... the Cafe'?"

I smiled but quickly shrugged to play it off, "I guess I'll be safe there."

"I'm going to ignore the fact that you feel unsafe alone with me. Now, let's go." He grabbed my hand and pulled me up from my chair.

"What-- Now?" He didn't answer. He just continued to lead me out the office. "Wait--" I pulled away from him so I could grab my purse from under my desk and then followed him down the hall.

We arrived at the Cafe' moments later and Gerard led me inside. I looked around the place for something that could be considered a gift, "Why are we here? I thought you said you got me something?" I whispered over to him. "It better not be a coffee."

Gerard ignored me and continued to look around the Cafe' for something. Then he spotted it, "There." He nodded over to the table by the window where a woman was sitting. Then I realized that woman was my mother!

"Mom!?" I exclaimed, getting her attention.

Once she saw me, she got up and ran over to me, embracing me like she hasn't seen me in decades, "Honey!" She petted my hair in a soothing way like she normally does, "It's so good to see you!" She pulled away from my hug but kept a hold of my hand, "You look so different! I hope I didn't wrinkle your beautiful outfit." She said, taking a step back to admire me. "You look so expensive."

I rolled my eyes, "Thanks, I guess... How did you get here?"

"By plane, of course. Your hunk of a boss called me and bought me a roundtrip ticket, put me in a nice hotel for two days. Boy, do I feel pampered."

I looked over at Gerard but he was already gone. I didn't even notice him leaving. I turned back to my mom, "Youre just staying for two days? That's it?" I pouted as I followed her back to the table she was sitting at.

"Yes, unfortunately I couldn't take any more days off of work."

"So when do you leave?"

"Saturday afternoon."

My eyebrows came together and my jaw dropped, "Ugh, why couldn't you have taken the whole weekend off?"

She smiled, "Honey, you know I work Sundays. And this was sort of a last minute thing." She pushed a coffee cup towards me, "I got you your favorite."

I walked back into the office right before quitting time, dropped my bag on my desk and walked into Gerards office. "You're back sooner than expected." Gerard greeted, leaning back in his chair. "How did it go?"

"Great!" I squealed as I ran over to him and threw my arms around his shoulders, "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"

"Okay, okay. You're welcome." He chuckled, pathetically returning my hug.

I pulled back and leaned up against his desk in front of him, "That's the best birthday gift I have ever received in the history of my life."

"I'm glad you enjoyed it. Why don't you take tomorrow off and spend the day with her." He suggested, tapping the pen he was holding on his chin.

"I don't want to take tomorrow off."

"Yes you do."

I bit my bottom lip before smiling over at him, "You're right."

"As always." He added.

I rolled my eyes as I stood back up, "I guess I'll see you Monday then."

"Monday's May Day." He reminded me. "You can come here if you want, but I won't be here."

"Sweet! Four day weekend!" I exclaimed, walking out of his office. My lips grew into a smile, Gerard just keeps on surprising me day by day.

**Preview for Chapter Sixteen:
I just figured he would ask you seeing that you two are attached at the hip these days."
I stopped what I was doing and looked up at her confused, "What? Why do you say that?" I asked nervously.
"Just to see your reaction." She laughed. "You did ditch me at lunch
twice. Once last week and again this week. I don't like sharing you, Harmony." She joked.
I rolled my eyes, "First off, I wasn't going to turn down free food. And second, I had an excuse last week, I had to work through lunch."
"And what's your excuse for yesterday?"
Well, the truth, we haven't seen each other for four days. I smiled over at her, "I told you, I wasn't going to turn down free food."
