Hear Your Heart

31: Water Under The Bridge

“What about James?” Iker mused as he sipped on the mug of tea that Olivia had plied him with. It had been a few days since the scan and ever since, all Iker had been able to talk about was the baby whose sonogram picture was already firmly affixed to the inside of his locker. It had been a wonderful experience, seeing the scan for the first time, and it made Iker acutely aware of everything he had missed first time around, something which had tinged the beautiful moment with a hint of sadness. He didn’t want to fixate on it, Olivia had done what she had thought was best when she was pregnant with Thiago, but he couldn’t help but notice what he had missed out on. He couldn’t help but hate that he wasn’t there.

“You’ve come up with a lot of boys names” Olivia noted as she placed a plate of food down ahead of them “What if it is a girl?” she posed.

“It’s a boy” Iker noted, shaking his head slightly “I can tell” he added.

“Firstly, that is something the expectant mother is supposed to say, not you, and secondly, I am pretty convince that it is a girl, so perhaps you ought to come up with a couple of names for your daughter” Olivia teased.

Iker offered her a slight look before he flicked to a new page of the baby name book which was settled at his side. “Why are you so sure it is a girl?” he posed.

Olivia shrugged. “It’s just a feeling. I had a similar one around this point when I was carrying Thiago” she explained.

Iker sighed. “I wouldn’t exactly know that now, would I?” he muttered.

Olivia cocked her eyebrow. “I thought we were over this” she mused.

“Well perhaps we aren’t” Iker muttered “I don’t want to fight, Oli, I really don’t, but you need to stop bringing up the last pregnancy. I love Thiago, you know I do, but I missed it, all of it, and I don’t need you constantly chirping on about it” he murmured as kindly as he could. He knew she didn’t mean to upset him, she was merely trying to explain stages of the pregnancy to him, but he hated it. He had missed it all the first time around and every time Olivia brought it up, it gave him an uncomfortable twinge in his stomach.

Olivia blinked a little. “I…I didn’t realize that I was chirping on about it” she murmured, her voice a little soft.

Iker sighed. “Oli…”

Olivia shook her head. “You’re right” she murmured “I shouldn’t keep making comparisons because I should know that it hurts you. It was selfish of me” she added.

Iker looked at her and swiveled in his seat, moving so that Olivia could stand comfortably between his legs whilst he held her hands. “I didn’t mean to snap” he noted, his dark eyes looking up at her “I just…it hurts me Oli, listening to you say things about the pregnancy I missed out on, and I would rather you not keep going on about it. I want to share in this one, but I don’t need to be constantly reminded of the one I missed” he explained gently, his thumbs gently brushing over the skin on the backs of her hands.

Olivia nodded gently. “I understand” she whispered “And I am sorry” she added.

Iker shook his head. “You don’t have to apologize” he whispered “I just thought it was important that you know that” he added.

Olivia peeked down at him bashfully. “I didn’t just mean for talking about it. I can’t quite remember apologizing properly for what happened in the first place and I want you to know that I hate that it hurt you so much. I’m sorry that I was so petty” she explained gently.

Iker smiled softly and lifted his head to the back of her neck, gently pulling her into a tender kiss. Olivia startled at the feel of it, the last thing she had been expecting was for him to kiss her. “It’s all water under the bridge, querida” Iker mumbled as he leant away from her slightly, keeping their foreheads in contact “We went through a lot, perhaps mostly down to me, but it isn’t important now. We’re not in Madrid anymore, we’re not fighting anymore, and we should focus on keeping it that way rather than the past. We have a pretty great future ahead of us” he murmured gently, his fingertips moving over the front of the shirt of his that she had opted to sleep in.

“Only pretty great?” Olivia whispered gently, a teasing smile on her face.

“Fantastic” Iker corrected “Brilliant, amazing, whatever adjective you want to use. Let’s not let our stupid past mistakes ruin something that has the potential to be perfect” he rambled, smiling up at her.

Olivia giggled and moved to kiss his lips once more before Thiago’s little voice echoed over the monitor which was sat on the side. “I should go and get him” she whispered between kisses “He’ll only be fussy if one of us doesn’t go and check on him” she added.

“We can both go” Iker commented as he pushed himself out of his chair “I am in the kind of mood where I don’t exactly want you out of my sight” he added.

Olivia blushed gently and moved to pad towards Thiago’s nursery, Iker in close pursuit.

“Hola, baby” Olivia cooed as she stepped into the baby’s room “Are you ready to come and get some breakfast?” she posed.

Thiago, who was sat in his crib, lifted his head, his little arms extending up towards his parents. “Mama” he chirped.

Olivia smiled and moved to lift the little boy up, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Buenos dias, baby” she whispered.

Thiago giggled softly before he turned his head to his father, extending his arms to him. “Papa” he squeaked, making Iker’s eyes widen.

“Did he just say that?” he squeaked.

Olivia giggled. “He certainly did” she enthused gently “Aren’t you a clever boy, Thiago” she added as she kissed the little boy’s head.

Thiago grinned and proceeded to chant his new word over and over again, something which made Iker grin. He may have missed out on the pregnancy that bought him Thiago, but he wasn’t going to miss out on another thing. He had his little family precisely where he wanted them and wasn’t about to let them go without a fight.
