Hear Your Heart

40: I’m Not Going To Say I’m Sorry

“Mama, papa?” Iker posed softly as he tapped the door of the spare bedroom, his brown eyes peeking at his parents who sat on the end of the bed. He felt bad, he could see how upset they were, but he still doubted it would be enough to make him feel bad for having married Olivia like he had. He loved the brunette, more than he had loved anyone before, and he wasn’t going to let a momentary feeling of guilt lead to regret. He wanted Olivia to be his wife and wouldn’t have changed it for the world. “Can I talk to you?” he added, taking a few paces inside.

Jose looked up and sighed. “I will leave you two to it” he mused, pushing himself away from his wife “I just hope you know what you are doing” he added as he passed his son. Iker frowned at his father’s comment, but ignored it, not wanting to cause any more of a problem. Watching the older man out of the room, Iker turned his attention towards his mother who sniffled gently.

“Mama, please” he murmured “I know you’re upset, but please don’t cry. I hate it when you do” he explained.

Carmen shook her head. “I just don’t understand, Iker” she whispered, trying not to sniff “You two didn’t have to do it like that, you could have waited, and I don’t know why you didn’t. I thought I was going to get the chance to watch you get married” she explained.

“It was a spur of the moment decision, mama” Iker defended gently “Olivia was having doubts and I just wanted to show her that there was nothing to be worried about” he added.

Carmen scoffed. “You could have done that any one of a million ways, Iker, none of which involved getting married without us around. I know it is selfish of me, but I always imagined I would be with you when you got married and it stings that I wasn’t” she whimpered.

Iker let out a small sigh. “Mama, I didn’t do this to hurt you” he whispered gently “I didn’t mean to upset you like this, but I wanted in that moment to marry Olivia and I don’t regret doing it. I know it must hurt, it would hurt me if Thiago married someone and I wasn’t there to see it, but I am not going to sit here and apologize for doing something that I am fairly certain I have wanted to do for the last 8 years. Olivia is everything I want, perhaps more, and when the opportunity presented itself, I took it and I am never going to say sorry for that. I love her, I wanted to marry her and the way I did it, whilst selfish, seemed right to me” he explained earnestly.

Carmen sighed. “Why couldn’t you wait? If you had just called, we would have been there as soon as we could have been” she noted.

“I know” Iker replied “And I am sorry that you weren’t there. But the wedding we had, it was perfect for us. It was simple, understated and introverted, something that my relationship with Olivia had always been. I am sorry that you weren’t there, mama, I really am, but I am not going to apologize for doing what we did” he reiterated firmly. He knew that it was selfish, his mother clearly wanted an apology of some sort for what he had done, but he wasn’t prepared to offer it. Whilst it may have hurt his mother, he didn’t have any regret about what had happened. It had meant that Olivia shared his name and that wasn’t something he was prepared to apologize for.

Carmen frowned. “You really don’t want to say sorry?” she posed.

“For marrying the love of my life? No, mama, I don’t” he replied “I am sorry that you weren’t there, and that isn’t something I can apologize enough for” he mused.

Carmen let his words linger for a moment before she looked at her son, offering him the slightest of smiles. “I am kind of proud of you, you know” she murmured gently.

Iker tilted his head. “How so?” he questioned gently.

“You’re sticking by your choice and that makes me kind of proud, that, and the fact that you married a girl that I adore” she mused.

Iker chuckled. “I adore her too, mama, and I adore the life that I am forging with her. We have Thiago and in a little while, we will have little Catalina too” he revealed softly, smiling at his mother.

Carmen repeated his words gently in her mind before her eyes widened. “Catalina” she repeated gently “You’re having a…a…” she stammered.

“A daughter, yes” Iker confirmed softly.

Carmen blinked her eyes gently before she tossed her arms around Iker’s shoulder, hugging him tightly. Iker chuckled softly and hugged his mother back. “You know, perhaps once Catalina is born, me and Oli could renew our vows in Madrid” he suggested softly.

Carmen pulled away from him. “You’d do that?” she posed.

Iker nodded his head. “It was the original plan” he noted gently “We were going to have the baby and then we were going to focus on arranging a wedding in Madrid for when the baby was a little older. I know it isn’t the same, mama, it’s not the actual wedding after all, but if that is something you would like, I am sure that me and Oli could deal with it” he mused softly.

Carmen smiled. “I would very much like it if we could set that up” she whispered, moving to hold his hand.

Iker squeezed her hand softly and smiled. “I will have to talk to Mrs Casillas, but I think that that should be fine” he teased softly.

Carmen shook her head. “I can’t quite believe that you’re the same little boy I gave birth to all those years ago” she whispered.

Iker smiled and kissed her cheek gently.

“Happy birthday, Iker” she mused.

Iker chuckled. “Gracias, Mama” he replied gently before he moved to help her up, pleased that they had managed to talk things through.
