Path to Starlight

She dragged herself through the mud, one arm useless, and the other clawing into the earth. She heaved herself through the underbrush; tearing apart her hand, in a desperate attempt to escape what she failed to kill.

A bloody rasp rose from her throat and she felt the rush of dread behind her. The dark forest was becoming drowned out by white light. She let herself go from the ground and grasped her chest, reaching for the amulet, for the promise she had made and failed to keep.

The stars of my heart will guide and uplift you from the sorrows of this world. Etched in blessed stone, runes from a village long since fallen and faded.

Behind her came terrible laughter, glee fueled by malice.

The white light filled the air, blocking out the dark of night and the stars held within it.
