Mitchum and Me

Six: Past

She scatters pictures from my family’s vacation three years ago across her desk.

I raise an eyebrow. “How did you get this pictures?”

She doesn’t answer my question. She instead, says, "Hawaiʻi is beautiful, isn’t it?”

I shift in my seat. “Yes. Have you visited the island before?”

She shakes her head. “Such an expensive vacation.”

“I could imagine,” I agree.

I stare at her fingers aligning the vacation pictures while talking. “Did you know this state has the highest population of homelessness in the U.S?”

She tilts her head to the side. “No. I didn’t know that. Interesting.”

I nod. “Yeah, it is interesting. Such a beautiful state infested with corrupt lives.”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you ever wonder how they became homeless?”

My shrink shrugs.

“No one really does.” I frown. “It’s a shame, really.”
