Two: Past

“Wait, you did not notice that it was her in your home?”

I nod. I want to shrug but I somehow stopped myself.

I see her furrowing her eyebrows together. Like, what is she thinking?

“And you did not recognize that it was the same girl from your party eating lunch with your mother?”

I puff. “It wasn’t a party.”

She rolls her eyes. That is the first time I’ve seen her react to one of my stories. It’s funny.

“But it was her?” She confirms. “Janiya, the one from your state of affection?”

I laugh. She has jokes.

As I nod again, I scratch my chin. “I guess I really needed to talk to dad that day.”
