Love Me Until My Heart Stops

66: You Don’t Know Anything

“If I have to meet one more aunt, uncle or cousin, I am going to start screaming” Gerard grumbled as he slipped back into his seat, his hand instantly grabbing Esmé’s which sat on the table. It had been a long night, between his speech which had bought almost everyone to tears and the first dance where he had trodden on Esmé’s foot, he was starting to get a little frustrated and the raft of relatives wasn’t helping. He had known that it was coming, Delia came from a family with 5 children and Roberto, from what he could gather, came from one of 4, and that meant there were a lot of aunts and uncles itching to meet the man who’d married their niece, but he was starting to get a little irked with it all. There were only so many smiles he could offer before they became forced and false.

“You knew that they were going to want to meet you” Esmé commented, sipping at the less than satisfying glass of water she had been given as an alternative to the champagne and wine everyone else was enjoying “They weren’t just going to stare at you from afar” she added.

Gerard sighed. “Why couldn’t you come from a small family? I could have been out of here hours ago if you had less aunts and uncles” he mumbled.

Esmé rolled her eyes. “You couldn’t have left hours ago even if I had no aunts or uncles. My madre has us on a schedule” she commented.

“And what is next on the schedule?” Gerard posed “Are we any nearer to me being able to take my new wife back to a hotel suite?” he added, his thumb gently brushing over the back of her hand.

Esmé’s cheeks warmed a little before she leant over to press a kiss to his lips, earning a small ripple of applause from the guests who milled around them. “She wants to cut the cake in ten minutes” Esmé murmured as she leant away from him slightly “I’m going to head back out to the garden, if you can locate your suit jacket which I saw Leo steal a while ago, you should join me” she whispered before she placed a kiss on his cheek, slipping past him.

“I don’t need my jacket” Gerard protested.

Esmé smiled. “I know. I do” she quipped before she stepped out of the room. Gerard rolled his eyes and made a beeline straight for Lionel, a little desperate to get another second alone with his new wife.

Wrapping her arms around herself, Esmé offered a look back towards the hotel, a small amused grin on her face. It had been a few moments and from the lack of Gerard’s presence, she could only assume that he had failed to find his jacket, something which made her laugh. It had been a long day, she had been awake for more hours than she cared to remember, but she was pleased with how well it had gone. The ceremony had been wonderful, the reception had been fantastic and she had little worry that the wedding night would disappoint. Tugging at her sleeves slightly, she offered the hotel another look before she stood up, making her way across the ground.

“You look beautiful”

Esmé startled at the sound of the voice and turned, her brown eyes landing on a man who stood a little away from her, a sheepish smile on his face.

“I had little doubt that you would. I mean, you always were such a beautiful girl, but you really do look stunning. Gerard’s a lucky man” he rambled.

Esmé furrowed her brow. “Do I know you?” she posed, taking a couple of steps towards him.

“No, probably not, but that’s my fault” he noted “Esmeralda, my name is Roberto Suarez” he added, sticking his hand out ahead of him.

Esmé’s throat dried as his name hung around them. She knew his name, it had been one that had been etched on her birth certificate since the day she had been born, but she couldn’t quite believe that he was stood ahead of her, a weak smile on his face. She couldn’t remember him, she’d been barely a year old when he’d left and Delia had hidden every photograph that there had ever been of him, but part of her recognized him, even if his face was hazy and his voice muffled in her head. She could sense he was telling the truth.

“I didn’t mean to scare you” Roberto noted softly “I shouldn’t be here, but my mother, your grandmother, she told me where the reception was being held and I couldn’t resist the chance to see you. You really do look amazing, Esmeralda” he mused, trying to break the ice.

Esmé blinked. “You’re not supposed to be here” she whispered “If mama catches you…”

“I know” Roberto noted with a small nod “I know how your mother feels about me. But this is your wedding day and I, as your father…”

“Father” Esmé scoffed, her expression tightening “You’re not much of a father, Roberto” she muttered.

Roberto sighed gently. “You’re right” he mused.

“How could you think that I would want to see you today?” Esmé murmured, her fingers tugging at her sleeves nervously.

Roberto shook his head gently. “I had to see you. I missed everything else but I didn’t want to miss you on your wedding day” he noted.

Esmé scoffed, shaking her head. “You have no right to be here. My mother might have been a bitch about it, but you still ran away and you have no right to show up here and play the doting dad on this of all days. This is supposed to be the best day of my life, Roberto, and you don’t get to show up here and play a part in it” she murmured.

“Esmeralda, I know…”

“You don’t know a thing. You don’t know when I broke my arm as a child, you don’t know when I had my first kiss. You don’t know that I almost got engaged once before or that that idiot broke my heart. You don’t know how I met Gerard. You don’t know anything about me, Roberto, and I don’t want you to stand there and pretend that you do. My mother may have decided that you weren’t worthy of a role in my life, but you’re still the reason for it. You ran away, Roberto” she hissed, tears in her eyes.

“It’s Esmé” she snapped “And you’d have known that if you’d stayed around for more than 13 months of my life” she added.

Roberto sighed gently. “You have every right to be angry, Esmé, you do, but I want to work on this, on us. Whether you like it or not, I am part of the reason you’re here and I want us to have some kind of relationship. I appreciate that now is not the best time to talk about it…”

“Go” Esmé interrupted, shaking her head.

“Please” Roberto whispered “If we could just talk…”

“I don’t have anything to say” Esmé whispered “I thought that I would, that I could cope with seeing you, but I was wrong. I don’t want to know why you left or if you ever contemplated coming back again. I don’t want to know you” she noted before she turned on her heel, making her way towards the door where Gerard stood, his eyes soft as he peeked over at Roberto.

“I want to go now” Esmé whispered as she took her husband’s hand, leading him inside “I don’t care what my madre has to say, I just want to get out of here. Can we do that?” she mumbled, wiping her eyes gently.

Gerard pressed a kiss to her head. “Of course we can” he assured her gently.
