Chapter 1
Waking up in a strange place filled with clear skies, fluffy white clouds, trees, plants and soil, she stood up and looked around. The
girl was a brunette with blue eyes and was carrying a huge backpack. Having decided that she could not stay there for a long time, she started to move forward and at the same time took note of her surroundings.
Hours later, she stopped by a hill and watched for the first time apart from the ones she had seen in pictures and movies, the sunset. Due to the stories she had heard, she knew she had to move fast, especially since she had began to feel eyes her and could hear growls in the distance. She soon
found herself in an open field and it was getting dark. A few seconds later, she could hear animals following her and she began to run. She jumped over logs and rocks and tried her best to keep a good distance between her and the animals chasing her. Soon she heard sonic guns blasting through
the air and the animals scampered back, then she bumped into a man and fell down on the floor.
After thorough check ups, scanning and questioning, she was led to an infirmary instead of the main office like she had expected, where she met a much older man who she guessed was the commander judging from the way he dressed and looked.
"My name is commander Nathaniel Taylor." Pointing at the man beside him who she had bumped into earlier, "This is Sheriff Jim Shannon who I believe you've already met and Dr Elizabeth Shannon."
"Pleased to meet you." Dr Elizabeth said, smiling warmly at her. She only nodded.
"So...what's your name?" Dr Shannon asked.
"Macy."
"How old are you?" Commander Taylor asked.
"Eight."
He chuckled. "Don't you look a little old to be eight?"
"Maybe."
"So how old are you?"
"Nineteen."
"How did you get here?" Jim asked.
"The portal."
"I know but what I mean is how were you able to get here since the portal was shut down?"
"Well I was among the recruits but due to certain complications I and most people couldn't get through so out of curiosity, instead of going home I stayed back to investigate and I was able to fix some things there secretly while pretending to be a member of the staff and I managed to get it working temporarily for a few
minutes. Luckily, before the guards could come for me someone or some people got through the portal which I thought was impossible and things got messy, so I managed to slip inside and here I am." Macy
explained.
"But that happened three months ago."
"No that happened this morning." Macy argued.
"Well according to the scans Max sent, due to the disfunctioning of the gateway you time travelled for three months but it only
seemed like a few minutes to you. It happens to everyone in a few seconds but yours were longer." Dr Shannon explained.
"So I wasted three months of my life coming here?" Macy asked getting slightly angry.
"Sorry sweetie." Elizabeth said
apologetically.
"Who do you work for?" Com Taylor asked.
"What do you mean?"
"You should know."
"Your men already asked me in their interrogation room or whatever and I already told them; I don't know what you're talking about. Look I came here for a new
life not to meet some paranoid security officers who are scared because of some invasion that happened before I came." Macy explained clearly frustrated.
"Okay but we still gotta make sure" Jim said.
"Whatever I don't care!" Macy yelled.
"Control your temper Miss. Now the unit where I could've put you under close watch is still being rebuilt which means you'll be
staying with the captain and his family." Taylor ordered.
"WHAT?!" Jim yelled.
"I don't need some babysitter." Macy yelled back.
"You don't have a choice. Now Jim, Dr Shannon can I talk to you in private?"
The three of them walked a short distance away from Macy who was pacing clearly frustrated and angry.
"Taylor I'm not sure we have room for her." Jim said.
"But you're building one." the commander replied.
"I kinda like her." Elizabeth said.
"Of course you do." her husband replied.
"She seems like a sweet girl beneath all that anger."
"She's an adult." Jim argued, "And she's kind of scary too."
"She'll be fine." Elizabeth said convincingly.
"Hey kid come over here." Taylor ordered.
Macy walked over to them and crossed her arms. "You done yet?"she asked.
"Do you know anyone here?"the
commander asked.
"Maybe but I'm not saying anything till I'm sure it's safe." Macy replied.
"Wait. What's your last name?" Jim asked.
"Keep guessing." Macy replied, "So...where am I staying?"
At the Shannon home...
"Macy, I would like you to meet our kids. This is Jason, Amanda and our youngest daughter Emily." Elizabeth introduced, "And
you can call me Elizabeth"
"Sup."
"Hi"Josh said dryly.
"Hi." Maddy smiled while Zoe waved.
"Where do I sleep?" Macy asked ignoring them.
"In Josh's room." Jim replied.
"Don't you have a couch bed or something?"
"No."
"Okay.Night"
