I Could Be What You Had Saved

17

Finnick is seventeen and he knows, deep down he KNOWS those kids won’t survive. Not this year. They’re lost causes and he doesn’t know what to do, but Aisa – she’s furious at him, and she gives all of her time to the kids, bringing them together and giving them as much of her as she can – does both of their jobs. It’s the second time he’s seen her since her victory and it’s only because Mags got sick, and he was trying really hard not to let her see this part of a victor’s life because he doesn’t think she deserves it.

She gets it anyway, her whole being breaking down when their tributes die – first the boy, then the girl a couple days later. He’s there when her eyes go unfocused before swelling up with tears, he’s there when she’s on the floor crying her heart out, and he’s there when she starts closing in on herself again. He’s also there when they have to talk to the parents and Aisa starts crying again.

It becomes a tradition, then, for her to mourn the tributes as if they were of her own blood every single year.

He doesn’t know if it’s better or worse this way.
