I Want the One I Can't Have

Prologue & Chapter 1 - About A Boy

Just quickly, all the chapters in this story will be songs/references to songs, at the end of each chapter I'll tell you who it's by and what it's called - the title of the book is a song by The Smiths. Also I couldn't find a video for this song so I used the one for the title of the fic not the title of the chapter. And this is a long chapter as it includes the prologue so I'll usually aim for around 6 pages?

///Prologue:
Jack smiled at the cute boy sat in the seat beside him
"Hey..I'm Jack," he introduced with a friendly smile as he subtly studied the caramel haired boy.
"Alex," he replied with a cute as fuck smile. Alex shook his hand as the bell went for the end of their lesson, and handed him a slip of paper
"You should call me..maybe we could arrange a date sometime," he winked as he left.
---
"Mom..dad, this is Alex," Jack smiled, introducing his parents to his boyfriend after a few months. His parents looked at each other, then at the 15 and 16 year old boys in front of them. Jack felt his smile falter when he saw the expression his dad wore
"Get out of my house," Bassam growled at Alex, turning to his son "a Gaskarth..of all people?" He growled. It was after Alex had left, not looking at Jack as he scurried out, that the boy received his first bad beating from his dad. Jack slowly backed away from his father, Bassam grabbed his son and shoved him into the wall
"After everything I've done? This is how you repay me?" He growled, dragging Jack to the basement and throwing endless punches and kicks, only satisfied when Jack could barely stand to go to his room.

Jack had cried so much that night, he couldn't believe he'd found someone so perfect, only to find out that they were a member of the one family he was supposed to hate. He had turned up to school the next morning with red eyes, tired due to his sleepless night and was pulled into the janitors closet
"If you think I'm gonna give up on you that easily, you've got another think coming, were just gonna have to be more careful," Alex told him with that stupidly cute grin on his face just before Jack kissed him. Alex kissed back briefly, then pulled away, gently caressing his cheek, his eyes flickering to the bruises "what happened?" He asked softly, moving Jack's top so he could see the bruises more easily.
"My dad," Jack mumbled, sighing softly as he looked down. He looked at Alex for a long moment, then lifted his top "he wasn't very happy with me last night," he mumbled as Alex looked in shock and horror at Jack's torso, covered in various shades of black and blue, he looked up at Jack and bit his lip
"Promise you'll tell me next time he hurts you?" He mumbled softly. Jack nodded and kissed him again
"Promise."\\\

Alex smiled brightly as the now 17 year old Jack got in his car, and kissed him "good day?" He asked softly
"Yeah, you?" Jack answered politely, putting his hand lazily on Alex's thigh. They chattered casually about their day until they got to the end of Jack's road, Alex kissed him, and pulled the younger boy onto his lap.
"Love you," he murmured softly, Jack smiled and kissed him again
"Love you too," he answered. Jack smiled softly, kissing him again and climbing out of the car "see you tomorrow baby," he murmured.
"I'm taking you out tomorrow night," Alex answered, pulling him back, he smiled softly "midnight date," he added. Alex pulled him back closer and kissed him "I'll miss you," he told Jack softly.
Their reason for having to sneak around was their parents. They weren't homophobic, they had nothing against their sons dating another boy, they had no problem with letting their sons date anyone. Anyone except each other. Jack and Alex's parents /hated/ each other, and as a result the boys weren't allowed to even talk to each other. Let alone kiss, care for and date each other.

Jack kept it no secret from Alex that he hated his home life, he would often sneak out of the house, and through Alex's window at night for a cuddle, the reason always varying, though his parents were always a part of it. Joyce and Bassam hated each other, almost as much as they hated the Gaskarth family, just not quite that much. They put on this loved up act for the outside world, but had no problem with showing their hatred towards one another once inside, in front of their children. They hadn't slept in the same room since Jack was 11, but they wouldn't dream of getting a divorce. Jack hated how his parents would bring home endless streams of people, both trying to make the other jealous, he hated how his father would call his mother all the terrible names under the sun. He had never got along with his dad, though his relationship with his mum was strong and good. The man was violent, a drunk, and seemed to enjoy getting a little violent with his youngest son.

Jack got home that night, sighing as he listened to his parents screaming at each other. He went to his room, slamming the door loudly, and tried to get on with homework, eventually resorting to playing his music loud enough to drown them out. After finishing some homework and eating dinner, he retreated back to his room, grabbing his phone immediately to text Alex. At around 11pm, Jack could hear his dad storm upstairs as the front door slammed shut. His own door was opened as his father walked in with an angry scowl on his face.
"Your mother is a fucking slutty bitch," he growled, Jack locked his phone and looked at his dad "and you're not?" He snapped, regretting the words no sooner had they left his mouth. His dad stepped forwards and slapped him "you're such an ungrateful little faggot," he growled, grabbing Jack's hair and punching him in the stomach before he stormed out. Jack took a deep breath and texted Alex, in desperate need of getting out of there, he did just that, going straight to his boyfriends house and climbing through the window. He slept at Alex's, having set an alarm to wake them before anyone was up, so he could go home. He enjoyed more than anything the feeling of the warm early morning sun on his back as he woke up curled into his boyfriends chest, sighing softly before he went back. Looking up at his mother as he entered the house
"Couldn't sleep - went for a walk," he mumbled, kissing her cheek before he went to bed.

Alex woke up that morning, a smile ghosting over his lips as he thought of what he had planned for his midnight date that night before going to pick Jack up, kissing him as he got in
"Morning," he hummed, lightly touching Jack's cheek as they kissed. He smiled and pulled away, driving them to school, getting out - as usual. He sighed softly when he saw the bruise on Jack's cheek, lightly brushing his thumb over the differently coloured skin - now a light green from Bassam's last hit, then kissed it
"I love you," he hummed, moving his hand to gently move Jack's hair out of his eyes, then lightly brush his thumb over his lips before he kissed him.

Jack repeated the three words back to Alex, looking away to avoid his touch when he started inspecting the bruise. He sighed softly
"I'm fine lex, it barely hurts now," he told him with a soft smile, trying his hardest not to flinch when Alex accidentally pressed a little too hard on one area. He smiled softly and pulled Alex inside, one hand on his hip. They didn't get many stares from people now, they were used to the two boys being together. They had been dating for two years by this point and frankly anyone who made any harsh comment was wasting their time, Jack and Alex rarely retaliated, though sometimes, they'd kiss just to annoy whoever made said comment.

"So, I was thinking of a house party for my 18th, tell people to bring swimming stuff and we can use the pool," Alex mused, looking down at Jack who was lay with his head in Alex's lap, feet on Rian's lap, playing with his boyfriends hand as he spoke. "Obviously you'd have to get there late," he told Jack softly.
Alex's parents had decided to go on a short trip out of town a week before Alex's birthday, leaving Alex to throw a party, his rules were simple: make sure everything is back to normal when they get back. In other words, he could have a party that lasted three out of the four days they were away as long as the house was clean when they got home. Alex had, however, decided against that, leaving the first night for a party, then the next three days to spend with Jack, just sitting around, watching movies, making out, whatever they desired, thanks to the empty house.

Zack hummed at Alex's proposition
"Sounds like a plan," he smiled
"Don't lie, you just want to see the girls in bikinis," Jack smirked, kicking his leg gently, the other two laughed as Zack nodded
"That's just an added bonus," he answered, leaning back on the grass where they were eating lunch. Rian hummed
"Tell you who I'd like to see in a bikini," he spoke up, Jack and Alex raising an eyebrow questioningly
"Cassadee Pope," he grinned. Alex smiled and patted his friends shoulder
"I'll make sure she's there," he grinned.

Cassadee was a cheerleader, who sadly Rian didn't have much of a chance with, though she was also the reason they were sat on the field - the same as every warm day: so Rian could watch her practice.

The four of them continued the conversation through lunch, and parted ways to go to PE, though Alex and Jack rarely went, and decided against it again, making their way to the janitors closet that was rarely used now.
"Fuck I've missed doing this," Jack muttered as he kissed Alex, pressing into him a little, Alex hummed in agreement as they made out, pulling Jack closer still, hands in the back pockets of Jack's jeans, gripping his butt lightly. They heard the three sequenced knocks from Rian or Zack that told them it was time to leave, and walked out before they could get caught by a teacher.

Alex was waiting for Jack when he showed up for their date at 11:55 that night. The older boy grabbed his hand and started leading him somewhere he'd never been. They walked for a while through the forest,
"If you're going to kill me make it quick," Jack chuckled at his own joke as he glanced at his boyfriend. Alex shook his head with an amused smile
"Just wait," he answered, continuing to lead the way until they got to a clearing.

Alex had lit a small fire, and put a blanket over a large log for them to sit on. He had a compilation of Jack's favourite slow songs playing from a portable docking station and there were tubs and flasks filled with food and drinks next to a pile of blankets.

Jack stared at the scene in from of him
"Lex..this is- it's amazing," he breathed, turning to look at Alex with a smile "you're the best boyfriend I could ask for," he told the smaller boy, leaning in to kiss him. Alex kissed back and grinned
"I'm glad you like it," he smiled happily, pulling Jack to the log, and sitting down "I got us pizza, and a cake each, and you can either have coffee or hot chocolate," he told Jack with a smile, kissing him softly.

They ate, and chatted, and laughed, and kissed until it was 1am and Jack was lay next to Alex, both on a blanket as they looked up at the stars.
"I love you," Jack murmured as he looked up at the dark sky, turning briefly to brush his lips against Alex's neck and murmur "so much." Alex smiled, a shiver running down his spine when he felt Jack's lips on his neck
"I love you too," he answered, turning towards Jack, and kissing him softly, hand caressing his face lightly with a smile.
