‹ Prequel: Would You Fall Too?

You Took My Heart by Surprise

42: All About Us

“My mother’s sent another bridal magazine” Emilie noted as she moved to sit down at the kitchen table, settling down the glossy magazine ahead of her boyfriend. It wasn’t the first time, in the month that had passed since they had told their parents, Adelina had plied her daughter with bridal magazines, and whilst Emilie loved the idea of getting married, she was growing slightly irked with her mother’s persistence.

She knew that it was a big deal, Adelina in particular had been waiting for the day her only daughter made it down the aisle, but it irked Emilie slightly. They were in no hurry, after their first discussion about the way they wanted their day to go, they’d not mentioned it again, and Emilie didn’t want to feel pressured. It had taken her a long time to get to a point where she felt comfortable with the idea of marrying Sergio and she didn’t want people pushing her, it wasn’t something which tended to have good results for the man who sat across from her, trying his hardest to feed their slightly fussy daughter.

Sergio, who held onto Esmé, shook his head. “You shouldn’t open them” he noted “She’s sent one a week since we told her and all they do is rile you up” he added with a little smile. He knew it bothered her, Adelina in particular was thrilled by the idea of arranging a wedding, but Sergio didn’t want Emilie feeling overwhelmed. They were in a good place and he knew that people from the outside pushing her would only serve to get at her.

Emilie shook her head. “She’s more excited than me” she noted.

“She’s your madre. She’s probably been waiting for this day since the doctor told her you were a girl” Sergio mused “I bet a little part of you is excited at the prospect of planning Esmé’s wedding” he teased, pressing a soft kiss to the side of the little girl’s head.

Emilie shook her head. “I just kind of want her to back off a little” she murmured gently “I want to do this, Sese, I want to get married and put everything behind us, but I kind of imagined us doing it at our own pace” she added.

“We will do, Em” Sergio assured her “Your madre is excited, both of our families are, but you can rest assured, no one is going to push us into anything we’re not ready for. I like the idea of a longer engagement, I don’t see the need to hurry along, and if anyone has a problem with it, they can talk to me. This is about us, Em, me and you, and no one is going to change it” he enthused, offering her a warm smile. He knew that she was still nervous, even if they were engaged, and he wanted to soothe her. The last thing he wanted was a repeat of what had happened the first time they’d gotten engaged.

“A longer engagement?” Emilie posed as she moved to collect Ethan from his seat, settling the 8 month old in her lap.

“You said it yourself. It doesn’t have to be in the next year” Sergio noted with a little shrug “I’d like the twins to be involved and they’re not even walking or talking yet. I thought you wanted to wait?” he posed.

Emilie nodded. “I do” she confirmed gently “I thought you didn’t” she countered. She knew Sergio, he’d waited a long time to be with her, and she had assumed that he was tired of it. She’d thought he wanted something quick.

Sergio offered a small shrug. “I’d wait if you wanted to” he noted “Or I’d do it tomorrow if that’s what you wanted. Emmy, this is the biggest day of our lives and I want us both to have a say in it. It’s our decision” he mused, emphasizing the word ‘our’. It had taken a lot of work, their relationship was difficult and complex, but it had smoothed out a little and he wanted to make the most of it. Their engagement was a sign that they were serious about each other that time and he wanted to make the best of it.

Emilie, who was fussing over Ethan, peeked up. “When were you thinking?” she posed softly.

“Next spring” Sergio noted “A small ceremony in Seville” he noted.

“How small is small?” Emilie posed, her expression warm and thoughtful.

“My parents, my siblings and their families. Your parents, Oscar and Melissa. Iker” he listed off easily “I know you’d like it to be as few people as possible” he noted, a fond smile on his face.

Emilie nodded, a slight blush on her cheeks. He’d always been observant.

“I want us to plan this thing together, Em” he fussed softly, his hand brushing Esmé’s back as she began to sniffle a little “This is about us” he added.

“I know” Emilie replied “And I want to do it with you” she smiled.

“I will talk to your madre. I’ll explain that we are doing things our way” Sergio offered gently “But she’s still going to want to be involved, Em. You’re going to be an overbearing mother of the bride one day too” he grinned, planting a kiss on Esmé’s head.

Emilie shook her head. “You’ve got to get through her dating first” she teased “I can only imagine her face when she brings home her first boyfriend” she added.

“You’ll be the same with Ethan” Sergio countered, a slight smirk on his face.

Emilie shook her head. “I’ll never be as bad as you, amor. That’s your little princesa” she grinned.

Sergio shook his head and peeked down at their daughter, admiring just how beautiful she was. “You’re going to have the boys chasing after you, aren’t you?” he murmured, kissing her cheek.

Emilie admired the sight of them and moved toward them, pressing a kiss to Sergio’s cheek. “You’re amazing” she fawned gently “I know I never say it enough, but you are and I hope that you know that me, and the twins, we’re very lucky to have you” she murmured gently. It wasn’t something she said often, but she wanted him to know it. She had lucked into finding him and she knew it.

Sergio smiled and leant up, kissing her cheek softly. He knew it was going to be hard work, getting the right day for them was going to be a task, but he wanted to work at it. He wanted to give Emilie a day that she could look back on and smile about.
