‹ Prequel: Would You Fall Too?

You Took My Heart by Surprise

09: I Just Didn’t Disagree

“Are you sure you don’t need a hand with anything before I go?” Sergio posed as he looked around Emilie’s apartment, ensuring that everything was in its place. He’d not been there long, he’d merely given Emilie a lift home after their appointment with Sofia, but he wanted to ensure that she was alright. The news that they were expecting two babies instead of the one they’d been thinking ahead for had clearly knocked her for six, and he wanted to be around for the moment when she inevitably freaked out. It was the one thing about Emilie he could practically guarantee.

“I’m fine” Emilie replied half-heartedly.

“You don’t sound too fine” Sergio mused thoughtfully “Emmy” he added as he moved to sit beside her.

“Emilie” she corrected.

“We both know I am never going to call you that” Sergio noted “So why don’t you just tell me what’s going on up here?” he noted, tapping the side of her head gently.

Emilie offered him a slightly thoughtful look before she let out a small sigh. “Twins” she muttered “There are going to be two of them, Sergio. I was going to be awful with one, but now they outnumber me” she added, her voice heavy.

Sergio shook his head. “Firstly, you’re going to be a wonderful madre, no matter how many of them there are, you’re meant to do this, Emmy. You’re sweet and kind, and you’re going to be fantastic at this. And secondly, they out number you, but not us. Emmy, I’m going to be there every single step of the way and we’re going to learn along the way. You’re not doing this by yourself” he insisted gently. He could see it worried her, her expression when Sofia had told them about the twins had been one of concern as opposed to his more cheerful look, and he knew she needed to hear someone say that she wasn’t going to mess up, it was her biggest flaw.

Emilie shook her head. “I am not going to be fantastic” she muttered.

“We both know you are” Sergio argued back “Emmy, you’re the kindest and most thoughtful person I know and any baby would be lucky to call you their mother. It’s going to take work, a lot of it, but it’s not just you is it? There’s me, your parents, Isla and Cristiano, we’re not just going to let you do this alone, Em” he assured her softly.

Emilie offered him a slightly dubious look, something which made him smile. “You’re going to be great” he repeated.

Emilie shook her head and rested back against the couch, her hand gently brushing over the small bump. “Don’t you have somewhere else to be?” she murmured gently.

“You seemed like you needed someone” Sergio noted “And I figured, since I am half responsible for that” he smiled, gesturing at her bump “I should be the one who listens to your concerns. I’d rather you talked to me than to Isla” he added.

“It’s easy, talking to Isla” Emilie replied as she moved to drape an arm over her eyes, trying her hardest to stifle the urge to throw up that was growing inside of her.

“I’d like it to be easy to talk to me” he returned softly.

“Invent a time machine, and maybe it will be, until then, you’re still my ex-boyfriend” Emilie mumbled.

“You’re the one making it hard” Sergio argued.

Emilie scoffed and dropped the arm from her eyes, sitting up to look at him. “I’m not the one playing shitty games, Sergio” she countered.

Sergio opened his mouth to retort, but Emilie got in first. “You’re the one with the girlfriend, you’re the one who kissed me at the hospital earlier, and you’re the one playing the games here. I’ve been nothing but plain with you, I don’t want this to be complicated, and I don’t want to be the reason that you and Pilar breakup. I just want you to be here for our children” she explained, her voice a little sharp.

Sergio sighed. “Has it occurred to you that it can never be simple?” he muttered.

“Of course it has” she muttered “And before you get there, of course I have thought about how it would be if we hadn’t have ended things, but the fact still remains that we did. You ended it because of me and that is enough to show me that no matter how much easier it might make things, it isn’t something which works. You’re the one who ended it and I am not going to tell you that that was wrong and fall into your arms again. The problem’s still there, I don’t know if I am ready for all of the things you are and that’s not changed in the last 8 weeks” she insisted, her blue eyes peeking down at her feet.

Sergio watched her, his mind mulling over each and every word, before he stretched his hand out, placing it against her cheek before he ducked his head, meeting her lips tentatively. Emilie stilled, just like she had in the hospital, before she felt herself giving in. There was no doubt she had missed kissing him.

“I made a mistake” Sergio murmured as he leant back slightly, his forehead resting on hers.

“No, you didn’t” Emilie returned gently “You just did what I was trying to do. I was wrecking it and you put an end to it. I just didn’t disagree” she added.

Sergio sighed.

“Sergio, it’s over and done with” Emilie noted as she edged away from him “You’re a great guy and you more than deserve to be happy, I just don’t think I am the one who can make it happen. You have something with someone else and I am not going to tell you not to do it” she added before she moved to her feet, mumbling something about needing a glass of water.

Sergio watched her go before he let out another muted sigh. He knew that she was right, if he hadn’t of ended it that night, then he was convinced that Emilie would have done, but that didn’t mean he didn’t regret that it had happened. It’d been wonderful for them and he couldn’t quite believe the state of disrepair that they found themselves in. It was worse than it had been when they’d first met, there were more feelings, more of a history, and he didn’t quite know what he wanted to do with it. He didn’t quite know what he wanted with Emilie.
