Scars

New School

I kept glancing nervously at Aunt Kelly. Every now and then she would look over at me and smiling reassuringly. I went back to staring out the window and watched as rain fell. Its been two weeks since I moved to New Jersey to live with my Aunt and today is my first day at my new school. To say I was nervous would be the understatement of century. I am no good at meeting new people.

Aunt Kelly stopped outside a big brick building. She reached over and gave my hand a tight but gentle squeeze.

“You’ll be fine baby girl,” she smiled at me. I smiled back as I opened the door. “Do you need me to pick you up?”

“No thanks,” I answered once I got out of the car. “I’ll walk.”

“Have a good day,” Aunt Kelly said. I closed the door and watched her driveway.

Sighing heavily, I turned around so that I was facing the building. A feeling of dread washed over as I watched an array of teens walking past me into the building. Most of them were laughing and talking with friends. I began to feel a little lonely and a part of me missed my sister. Although she’s the one who outed me, I guess looking back she only did it because she cares. Too bad my parents didn’t and didn’t want to deal with me and my “problem” hence why I moved in with Aunt Claire.

Might as well get this over with Holly thought as she begrudgingly started walking towards the building. Inside the school, she just stood by the entrance. Around her was the chattering and laughter of students. Holly could feel her heart begin to race as she proceeded to walk to the main office.

“Hello Holly,” Shelly, the receptionist, greeted Holly with a smile once she saw Holly walk up to the desk she was sitting behind. “Ready for your first day?”

“No,” Holly laughed nervously, wiping her sweaty hands on her jeans.

“You’ll be fine,” Shelly said as she handed Holly a piece of paper. Holly grabbed onto it with shaking hands. “I have arranged for you to have a guide today. She should be here any second.”

“She’s here,” a voice from Holly said. Holly glanced over her shoulder at the black haired girl who spoke. She stopped at Holly’s side and smiled at her. She extended her head. “I’m Alicia.”

“Holly,” Holly whispered softly shaking hands with Alicia.

“Well you two better get going,” Shelly said. “Good luck Holly.”

“Thank you,” Holly smiled politely before following Alicia out of the office.

“What’s your first class after homeroom?” Alicia asked, turning to Holly.

Holly looked down at her schedule and let a deep moan.

“Math,” she answered. Alicia laughed.

“Not a fan of math?”

“I’m more of a walking on broken glass than math,” Holly replied with a small smile. Alicia laughed heartily.

“You’ll be fine, I promise.”

The bell rang signaling the start of the day. Alicia showed Holly her homeroom and told her that she would meet Holly after every class so that Holly wouldn’t get lost.

Holly sat down at a desk in the corner of the room, so that she was out of view. Unfortunately for her, she had to stand up and introduce herself. She sat down without hesitation.

“Ready for math?” Alicia asked once Holly walked out of the classroom. Holly shook her head. “Suck it up girly.”

Math class, as well as three other classes, came and went for Holly. Finally it was it was lunch. Thankfully, Alicia told Holly she could eat lunch with her and her friends.

“Hi guys!” Alicia smiled walking up a table in the far back of the crowded cafeteria. Holly stood behind her to the side. “This is Holly.”

“Hey Holly,” a girl with pale smooth procelain skin and red hair greeted her with a friendly smile. “I’m Lucy and this-” she motioned to the dark haired boy sitting next to her, “is Frank and I have the unfortunate pleasure of calling him my boyfriend!”

“Hey!” Frank exclaimed with a frown causing Holly to let out a little laugh. His eyes narrowed playfully, he looked at Holly. “You think that’s funny?”

“Well I laughed didn’t I?” She replied back rolling her eyes.

“Okay children!” Alicia exclaimed and then proceeded to introduce Holly to the other two people at the table; her boyfriend Mikey and her best friend Taylor.

The two sat down at the table. Alicia, obviously, sat down next to Mikey while Holly sat between her and Beth. Throughout the forty minute period, Holly was bombarded by questions from the others. She didn’t mind though, they genuinely seemed interested in getting to know her. By the end of the period, the five knew more about her than the students at her old school. Back home, only one person actually talked and socialized with her and that was Claire.

“That went by too fast,” Lucy said with a scowl after the bell rang. Frank gave her a peck on the cheek which caused her to smile.

Holly stared longingly at them. She wished she had someone like that, but who would want her and her problems?

“Holly, you coming?” Mikey asked, snapping Holly out of her daze. It was then Holly realized she was the only left at the table.

She quickly stood up and walked over to where Mikey and Alicia were standing. Taylor, Lucy and Frank had already left. The three walked out of the cafeteria.
Nothing exciting happened for the rest of the day.

“FREEDOM!” Frank yelled as they walked out of the building. The others just stared at him blankly. He furrowed his eyebrows. “What?”

“Why the hell am I dating you?” Lucy wondered, staring at him with her head titled to the side.

“Cause I’m irresistible,” he smirked. Lucy rolled her eyes.

“Yeah okay.”

“Well then,” Alicia laughed, turning to Holly. “Would you like to hang out?”

“I wish I could but I have to babysit my cousin,” Holly sadly answered. Alicia just gave her a smile.

“We’ll hang out some other time then.”

“Cool,” Holly smiled back.

Holly said goodbye to the others and stood there as they walked away. Smiling to herself, she turned around and started walking to her Aunt’s house.
