RED LODGE, MT—Garrett Sokoloff does his best to live a bland life with his sweater-knitting uncle, working at a downtown trading post and directing tourists to the nearest whatever: bathrooms, Chinese restaurants, the owner of the purple Harley, and so on. His past lies just over the mountains' crest, but he likes to pretend it's further than that.

Carina Huerta wants the opposite: to scrape together enough money to leave and to—maybe, one day—go to art school. Like Garret, she, too wants to run: not away from the past, but towards some bright and perhaps nonexistent future. Red Lodge is beautiful, but it's also suffocating.

And Ask is just a science project prone to episodes of kleptomania.

Ask is also in danger.
