Give Into Me.

April 22, 2018 - The Proposal

"Seriously? It must be ignore Adleigh day." I mumbled under my breath hanging up my iPhone for the tenth time this car ride before tossing it into the cup holder of Tyler's Jeep. Looking out the window I watched the black interstate fly by beneath our vehicle, miles ticking by one right after another.

Crossing my arms across my chest I huffed with annoyance, Tyler's eyes left the road in front of him taking in a sight of anger pouting in his passenger's seat, "Your mom didn't answer you either?"

"No, not her cell or her office phone, If I did that there would be a search team formed in minutes."

Tyler laughed reaching his hand over to lay on my knee, "Maybe they're just busy. I'm sure the dogs will be fine without being in their kennels for a day, Jamie knows to let them out couple of hours."

"Busy? All of them, Hannah, my mom, dad, hell I even called Luke!"

His hand ran up and down my leg in an effort to sooth my irritate mood but it was going to take more than that, "They're going to be fine baby, you need to relax we're on a date remember?"

Exhaling a cleansing breath I pushed my annoyance to the back burner, today was just for us.

After advancing quickly through the first round of the playoffs with a 4-0 sweep of the Minnesota Wild Tyler had decided we were going down to Austin to spend the weekend. We would explore downtown tonight and watch Asher's baseball game at UT tomorrow. The game was another reason I kept pestering my parents, I wanted to know when they were coming down because I knew there was no way they would miss one of Asher's last few games as a Longhorn.

"You're right, I'm fine they're going to be fine." I waved my hands as if clearing the air before lacing my left with the hand Tyler hand laying in my lap.

Over the past two years I had brought Tyler down to Austin as often as I could, he had seen Longhorn football games which quite frankly were my favorite as a member of the UT Cheer team, and countless baseball games. With this year being Asher's senior season every game was important, he wasn't declaring for the MLB draft he knew the odds of making a team were slim so he planned to finish his engineering degree and come home to Dallas.

When we arrived in Austin the first thing we did was check into our hotel, after showering and changing into dinner worthy clothes (a black baby doll t-shirt tucked into a burnt orange suede skirt and black booties) Tyler and I set off in an Uber. Visiting this city as and "adult" and not a college kid was so different, instead of hitting up the bars that served Jell-O shots and dollar beers we were eating at 5-star restaurants sipping wine that cost $10 a glass.

Growing up had its perks I guess.

After dinner we strolled around downtown on foot finding the famous "I love you so much" wall where we of course took pictures. I'd known about the wall my whole life but for the first time I stood in front of it with the love of my life not just Hannah or my sorority sisters.

It finally meant something.

"Do you wanna go walk around Campus? It's a nice night, you've never really shown me around before." Tyler asked holding my hand as we continued down the sidewalk.

"Yeah, I'm sure it's wild though. Next week is dead week everyone is getting their last bit of partying in."

Tyler shrugged digging his phone out of his pocket to order an Uber, as we waited for the car to arrive he held me with my back against his chest, "You don't think we'll run into your brother do you? I don't want to cramp his style."

"No, the baseball house is off campus and it's a game night they have rules about partying. Besides, I'm sure Ash would love to show you off, he has to tell everyone his sister is dating "Tyler Seguin, the hockey player"."

A small black car pulled up to the curb and the passenger's side window rolled down revealing an older man in the driver's seat, "Are you Tyler?"

With a nod Tyler grabbed the handle to the backseat allowing me to slide in before him, once we were both inside the man up front confirmed our destination as the University of Texas' campus. It wasn't a long journey so the car remained relatively silent only the low hum of the radio playing old country music filled the air, as the Honda approached the school the sky above us darkened as the time faded nearing 8 o'clock.

Along San Jacinto Boulevard the car stopped and the man who had driven us parked the car and turned to face the two of, "This is the middle of campus, do ya'll need pointed in direction of somethin'?"

I smiled at him and shook my head, "No thank you, sir. I'm an alumni, just showin' this one around tonight."

"Ahh, well you two have a nice night. Go horns!" He tipped his hat down revealing a longhorn symbol embroidered onto the black cap. Tyler thanked him and slid him a tip before opening the door, I followed him out adjusting my skirt as I stepped back out into the late spring heat.

"Where do you wanna start? You've seen the stadiums, and well baseball will look the same tomorrow."

Tyler pointed through the shrubbery towards the main campus where the classes were held, "Let's go in there, show me where you had class, tell me stories or something."

I loved when he did that, when he wanted to learn about my past so that we could feel like we had known each other back then. Things would have been so much different if I had known Tyler in college, maybe we'd already be married, maybe we'd have a kid or two. Or maybe if I hadn't had my heart broken by Noah I would have never given Tyler a chance, or had the opportunity to.

So if I had to choose I'd keep things like this, I'd go through all that heartbreak again if it meant that after it all I'd find the one that is well with my soul.

The absolute one for me.

Like I was showing a prospective freshman around I gave Tyler the grand tour of UT, plus a few candid stories I would have never told any random stranger. Some including streaking during Rush Week and an epic game of hide and go seek that lasted 6 hours on the quad one night after homecoming. Everywhere we went I had a memory and I shared them all with Tyler just as my parents shared theirs with my brother and I each and every time we visited campus growing up. And now as I get older I can't wait to do the same with my own kids, I want to dress them up in little orange outfits and show them where Mommy went to school. Maybe even one day they'd follow in my footsteps, or Tyler's even though I'm sure having kids that play hockey would really ramp up my anxiety!

Nearing an hour into the "tour" Tyler had seen it all and we were coming back around by the football stadium where the driver had left us, and for some reason in the middle of April the lights were on. It was confusing but then again the football team practiced damn near year round so who knows, as I stared at the monstrosity of a stadium Tyler was texting away on his phone, probably Jamie I decided.

After a few minutes he slid the phone into the back pocket of his khakis, "Lets go in the stadium, it'll be a whole other view than we usually get."

"Babe, I spent four years on the turf. I've seen it from all angles, and I'm not even sure we can get in there." I reminded Tyler but he didn’t seem to change his mind only lacing our hands, checking the street for cars before leading me towards the entrance.

He lead us towards a gate that was propped open with a brick pulling it back I stepped inside, "Ty, I don't know about this."

"Live a little, baby. Do you trust me?"

"Of course I trust you? Why, what did you do?" His "up to no good" smirk crawled across his lips reaching into his back pocket he pulled out a black bandana. "Is that a blindfold?"

"I promise it's just one surprise babe." He gave me no time to object swiftly tying the fabric around my eyes until I couldn't see anything. "Okay, don't let go of my hand."

"As if I couldn't find my way around in here." I sassed and Tyler stopped walking.

"Can you not be sassy for like 5 minutes?"

I shrugged my shoulders, "Probably not."

Tyler huffed totally use to my attitude by now and continued walking into the stadium, by the sound of our feet I could tell where we were. The concrete turned into downward steps, that eventually faded into loud metal clicking under the heel of my booties before we landed on the soft turf, the itchy plastic grass rubbed against my shoes making scuff marks I knew I would never get out. From the angle we entered the field at I did calculations in my head, we had to be going towards the 50 yard line where the big Longhorn symbol prominently marked the grass.

Wherever we were headed we must have been there because Tyler stopped, placed his hands on my hips and directed my body to face a certain way, he stood in front of me and untied the blindfold. I blinked a few times adjusting to the bright artificial light that illuminated the stadium, I was facing the visitors bleachers but even closer than that was Tyler who's face was inches from mine his hands laced with mine dangling at our sides.

We were silently staring at each other but Tyler's grin and almost gasp for air broke the silence, "Hi."

"Hello?" I sort of asked so confused by the whole setup of yet another Tyler Seguin "surprise".

"Well, I'm sure you're confused and well, God I'm uhh, I'm nervous." Tyler chewed on his lip and my stomach flipped and flew up into my throat.

It was right then that I realized what was happening.

With a loud swallow Tyler starting talking again as I felt my own throat drying up, "Adi, baby I am beyond in love with you. I am whole heartedly and 100 and 10 percent devoted to you, and you know that. God, at least I hope you do. And I think I've made it pretty clear that I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you. Right?"

I nodded giving him the only bit of clarity that I could in the moment.

"So, that's why I brought you here tonight. To UT, to Austin to the place that I know holds the biggest place in your heart because, well I was hoping that you could make room for me in there too for the rest of your life." My lower lip was trembling and I felt the hot tears stinging at my eyes as Tyler let go of one of my hands turning me around to face the other side of the "empty" stadium. Making the 180 I gasped as my eyes took in the sight before me, in the front row stood my mom, dad, Hannah, Luke, and Asher each of them holding big white poster boards in their hands.

And as if on cue they slowly started turning them around.

My mother grinned down at me her big white board reading "Will" gripped tight in her hands.

My father, the first man I ever loved shot me a wink, "You" covered his board in thick black writing.

Hannah and Luke turned their shared board around the slowest, the word itself filled my stomach with a million thundering butterflies, "Marry" read the poster.

And last but not least my little brother polished off quite honestly the biggest question I could ever be asked in my life with his sign that read "Me?"

By the time I had scanned the whole row a few times I was sobbing without knowing it, my right hand covered my gaping mouth and I was most definitely in shock. I swallowed in preparation of speaking, my throat eerily dry unlike my cheeks that were streaked with stray tears. Drawing my attention away from my family Tyler grabbed my left hand, my eyes moved slowly down from the stadium down to the grass where Tyler was down on one knee.

He grinned up at me holding my left hand in his hand, as I looked downward I realized my ring finger was bare, something it hadn't been since January of last year. That's when I realized Tyler had been cooking this up all week, or longer probably. When he told me the jeweler "suggested I bring in my ring for a cleaning" on Tuesday I never would have guessed it was to ensure my finger was bare for this live changing event.

Damn, he was good.

Tyler cleared his throat snapping me back into reality, looking down at him I felt like I was in a tunnel, just he and I all my focus on the dark haired boy down on one knee in front of me, his fingers pried open the little black velvet box he had pulled from the pocket of his pants. My cloudy eyes strained hard in the bright stadium light to focus on the ring, it was beautiful a rose-gold band filled with small diamonds that reflected all the light onto the single stone protruding from the middle. It was simple, it was so my style, and Tyler had SO had help picking it out, "So, umm. Adleigh Ruth Reichman I was wondering if you would make me the happiest man in this world, by becoming my wife. Will you marry me?"

Hearing those four words come out of Tyler's mouth made it all so much more real, my heart fluttered the butterflies in my stomach were going insane and even though I was crying I couldn’t help but grin at him like the Cheshire Cat. Slowly, then rapidly I nodded my head up and down, sniffling in a new breath of air I finally opened my mouth, "Yes, yes! Ohmygod, yes. Of course I'll marry you, Tyler."

As if he had been holding in his last breath I could hear a gush of air leave Tyler's lungs, he was relieved. But did he honestly think I would say no to him?!

It felt like an eternity, like we were moving in slow motion as I watched Tyler pry the ring out of the tiny box fiddle with it until he had it firmly grasped between his fingers. I stared open mouthed as the he pushed the gold band up my left ring finger to it's new home where it would stay for the rest of my life. When it was where it should be Tyler looked up at me, licked his lips and grinned as he rose off the ground. The slow motion feeling faded as his hands found hold on either side of my head pulling me into quite frankly one of the best kisses ever, our first kiss as an engaged couple.

Pulling away my left hand rested on Tyler's cheek and the sound of five adults whooping and hollering brought us out of the tunnel I felt we had been in for the last ten minutes. I giggled staring into Tyler's eyes, "Hey Ty, we're getting married!"

"I can't wait." He leaned in and kissed me one more time, softly and quickly.

Nodding my head over towards our cheering section, I pulled back from our close embrace "I think we should acknowledge the fans now."

He agreed, tossing an arm around my shoulders we walked across the turf to the small section of concrete that golf carts roamed around on game days. Looking up at five of the most important people in my life I couldn’t help but return the huge grins they were giving Tyler and I. Looking to my left I saw that he was smiling just as big, the little crinkles formed by his mouth that only popped up when he was extremely happy.

"LET ME SEE THE RING?!" My mother half-shouted down at me. I shook my head at her eagerness but pushed up on my tippy-toes and threw my left arm over the railing. "Oh, wow. Tyler that is truly beautiful. Ben, look at this ring isn't it perfect for her?"

As if the man even cared about jewelry, but he cared for my mother so Ben took a look at my hand with Hannah peering over his shoulder as well. "Ya did good son. Congratulations you two."

"Thank you daddy." I smiled at the grey headed man suddenly feeling the urge to cry again.

But I fought it as Tyler shook my dad's hand and Hannah pushed her way to be in front of me. "Congratulations Adi, you picked a good one."

"Thank you, who would have ever thought, huh? Me and a hockey player."

The blonde shrugged her shoulders, "You were always one for a good adventure, and I think giving Tyler a chance and falling in love with him was your greatest one yet."

"I'll agree with that, but y'know planning a wedding is quite the adventure too.." I looked to Tyler then back at Hannah, "So, I hope you're ready to be my Matron of Honor."

Hannah's lips pursed tightly and I saw her eyes begin to glisten, "Of course, I've been waiting to hear you ask since Tyler asked me for help with your ring."

"Ah-hah! I knew he had help!" We both giggled as she let the cat out of the bag.

"BUSTED!" Asher added in from the end of the row.

Tyler held his hands up like he had been caught at the scene of a crime, "Hey now, I just wanted to make sure you liked it."

"Aww, baby of course I like it. I'd love anything you picked out for me!" I laid my left hand on his cheek to reassure him feeling his cheek rise in a smile under my palm.

For the second time that evening my mom interrupted our moment, "Tyler, honey should you call your mom?"

"Let's FaceTime her, and your sisters. You probably should call Jamie too." I added.

Tyler pulled his phone out of his pocket and handed me mine (the skirt I was wearing didn’t allow much storage), the famous FaceTime sound poured from his iPhone as he waited for his mother to answer, her blonde head eventually filled the screen as we both stared back at her. "Hi honey, where are you? Oh my, did you?"

My left hand shot up showing off the new décor on THAT finger, "We're getting married!"

A shrill scream exited the phone as Jackie covered her mouth, "My baby's getting married, oh my god! Cassidy! Get in here, your brother has something to tell you!!"

Before the young girl could even enter the frame of the camera she was talking, "What dumb thing did he do now?"

"Hey Cass, how do you feel about being a bridesmaid?" I asked wiggling my fingers around, her eyes were huge and mouth hung open for a few seconds before she spoke.

"Yes! YES, YES! This is the best thing Tyler has EVER done!! Oh my god, congratulations!!"

"Thank you." We both said in unison as both Seguin's were crying up North in Toronto.

"Now don't forget to call Candice, or text her I'm sure she's out." Jackie reminded her eldest who nodded along to her instructions.

"Yeah, okay mom. We have to make this quick, we've got a few other people to call." Tyler then promised to call in a few days to talk more and to also call his "important" relatives. When he was off the phone with those two he was quickly on the phone with Candice who answered as she waiting to get into some bar. Her response was quite the same as her younger sister's and just like that I had two bridesmaid's and my Matron of Honor.

"Jamie? Or do you need time to think about your best man?" I asked as Tyler held his phone his nose most likely tired of talking on it already.

"No, he's it." The FaceTime app was opened once again as Tyler called his Captain and best friend, it rang and rang before Jamie's face appeared in the dark only illuminated by what I presumed to be the TV.

"Can I help you?" Jamie asked.

I rolled my eyes it wasn't even 11 o'clock yet and he was in bed, "Are you actually in bed, Jamison?!"

"I'm tired, some of us did off-ice workouts today instead of going out of town."

Tyler shook his head, "Whatever Chubbs, I'm still in better shape. But, dude wake up I've got a question."

Jamie groaned and it sounded like he was shuffling around, "What is so important? Katie's just got out of the shower so keep it clean."

"And I'm standing right here? What the hell do you two talk about when we're not around?" I added.

"Can you two stop arguing please?" Jamie and I silenced leaving the floor to Tyler, as I awaited him to "pop the question" to his best friend the tall blonde girl that I had grown close to came into view. "So, Jamie I already got the girl, so uhh will you be my best man?"

Holding up my hand Jamie smirked and Katie squealed, the Captain slowly nodded his head, "Yeah man, It'd be an honor."

And just like that we were off to the races, wedding planning was officially in motion.
The seven of us then fell into conversation with the railing between us until a voice I didn’t recognize boomed from behind Tyler and I, turning I saw a woman dressed in all black with a camera around her neck, "Excuse me, I hate to interrupt, but ya'll only have the stadium for another half an hour. Would you two like to get some quick engagement pictures?"

I was dumbfounded, not only had he arranged the stadium, and getting my family here without me knowing, Tyler had gotten a "secret" photographer to capture the moment for our later enjoyment.

He was actually perfect.

"Yes ma'am." I told the woman, because what girl turns down photos. Before I went off with her and my fiancé I turned to Hannah, "Is my makeup still okay?"

She laughed but reached behind her for her purse she handed me a mirror and a tissue, cheerleading habits of carrying makeup and removers at all times die hard. When I was photo ready I followed after the other two to the field as the five in the stands made their way down to our level. For the next 30 minutes or so Tyler and I took pictures in every "engagement" pose you've ever seen on Pinterest. I was certain this wouldn’t be our only photo shoot but it was cute and meaningful place to start and I honestly couldn’t wait to see the photos from the actual proposal even though I was sure to be sobbing in most of them.

As the stadium lights began to shut off we were ushered out by a man in a UT Polo, at the door to the stadium he shook Tyler and I's hands and wished us an eternity of happiness. Asher hugged the two of us goodbye and skipped off to "go to bed", while my parents, Hannah, and Luke headed off into the direction of their hotels leaving Tyler and I alone. As I turned to look at the Stadium that now held one of the biggest memories I'll probably ever had I grinned. Today had gone so much different than I could have ever dreamed, I woke up with just a promise that one day Tyler and I would get married and now falling asleep I would be an engaged woman.

Life is crazy, but life is good.

"Hey babe, so how do we tell people?" Tyler asked as we began walking with no destination in mind.

"Like the rest of our friends or like "people" like your fans?"

"Both? Like do we send a mass text or just let them see it on social media?"

Social Media. Putting this big of a life event on social media scared the shit out of me, but I knew that word spreads like wildfire and my left hand would be seen and set the press into a frenzy.

"People will see my ring soon, hell they'll see it tomorrow. We might as well beat them to the punch?"

And so we did.

Tyler and I gathered those who we deemed "text worthy" into a group message and attached a photo of my hand with Tyler standing behind it in front of the stadium sign (we had gone back to Pinterest for inspiration) and shared the big news. Once all of our friends and family members, as well as Tyler's agent who already knew he was proposing knew we both posted to Instagram our two posts topping one another.

| @adiruth08: I have found the one whom my soul loves, and I cannot wait to marry him. I love you so, @tseguin92 #engaged #HookedForLife #UTEngagement|

It took a total of 10 minutes for the internet to break.

Well, maybe just the hearts of thousands of girls broke but our social media was exploding and our phones hadn't stopped vibrating, dinging, and ringing since we sent the mass text. People were calling, texting, commenting, and DM'ing left and right, as we laid in our hotel bed we sat and laughed at the two iPhones laying between us the screens lighting up with one notification after another.

"Okay that's it," Tyler snatched the two cell phones walked into the bathroom and threw them into the cabinet below the sink, he shut the door to the bathroom and came back to bed. "Now, it's just us."

"Come here, Fiancé" I drew him in with my finger curling it in and out.

He crawled closer laying his head on my chest the messy curls on top of his freshly showered head tickled my cheek as he adjusted himself wrapping his arms around my stomach for a secure hold. "I really like the sound of that."

"Oh yeah?" I asked running my fingernails across his scalp admiring the ring on my finger as well.

"Yeah, but I think I'm really going to like hearing Adleigh Seguin better."

Adleigh Ruth Seguin.

Wow, that does have a nice ring to it.

Not that I hadn't ever said it aloud to myself before, or written it down and scribbled over it in my planner like a 16 year old., ever since the "pre-proposal" promise ring the idea had been floating through my head. Along with daydreams of our wedding, honeymoon, and eventually raising a family that as we had discussed would be the two of us and 2-3 kids, a son and a daughter, the best of both worlds.

But as long as I had Tyler, his love, and his last name I'd be happy with whatever God blessed us with.

Laying my head on top of his I pressed my lips into his hair, "I like the sound of that, too."
