Unfortunate Souls

Quest

He wasn't really stealing anything. Technically, the thing was his; he was just taking it back.

Really, he would be a hero. No one had ever dared to enter the private property. No one even knew what it looked like.

As the boy snuck through the creaking, iron gate, he couldn't help but think that he was a knight, the mighty dragon slayer, a pioneer of his time.

The grass was overgrown. An abandoned garden that had probably once held herbs and flowers rested to his left, with its weeds and vines toppling over the confinement. The grass snapped under his feet, and the boy felt that one wrong move would be his last.

He almost turned back. His lost item could surely be replaced. But no; he thought of his baby sister, who cried as the item was ripped away by the wind. He had to continue.

He carefully took a step, and then another, and another. He spotted other lost things, but even with their bright colors and personal history, they paled in comparison to his.

Where was it? Surely the old man hadn't took his away while leaving the others?

There - in the tree, a bright and beautiful green that threatened to bring tears to his eyes. With all the trouble he had to go through, he vowed to never let it leave his grasp again.

Yes, he decided, he'd tie it to his wrist if he had to. As the boy yanked the kite free of the tree branch, he couldn't help but think how he would share the story with the other kids in the neighborhood. How he had faced Old Man Jacobs yard by himself, and retrieved his kite.

Something not even the big kids had done before.

No angst in this one! Enjoy it, kids, because there's a slim chance of it happening again.
