Don’t Let Me Let You Go

11: It Can’t Be That Hard

“Are you feeling a little better now?” Iker posed gently as he walked alongside Viola, carefully swinging their hands which were interlocked between them. It had been a nice night, after Viola’s slight freak-out, they’d settled down to enjoy a pleasant meal together, and Iker was pleased to see her a little more relaxed, even if he had enjoyed watching her fret slightly, he was pleased that she seemed comfortable around him.

“I do” Viola confirmed gently, her blue eyes watching their hand interestedly “I am sorry that I behaved like I did” she added.

“It’s alright” Iker mused “It makes it one irrational speech each” he added with a little smile.

“We’re really quite strange” Viola mused “I know a lot of people who’d be a lot better at this than me” she added.

Iker shook his head. “It’s not a bad thing to be nervous, Viola” he noted “If you weren’t, I don’t think I would be so keen on you” he added thoughtfully. He found it endearing, the way she tended to get a little worked up and nervous, and he was pretty sure that without it, he wouldn’t have liked her nearly as much as he did. He’d had his fair share of confident women but he kind of liked the way Viola was. To him, at least, it was a sweet characteristic that he hoped she’d keep for a little while.

Viola shook her head. “You really don’t mind?” she posed, her hand carefully brushing some of the blonde hair that had snuck out from beneath her hat away from her face.

“In case you’ve forgotten, I am not exactly Mr Suave myself” Iker teased, squeezing her hand softly “I am sure that we can figure this out though. It really can’t be that hard” he mused, trying to offer her a little encouragement. It was a strange thought, neither one of them had dated in a while and it was going to take some getting used to, but he felt good about them. In their own way, they appeared to have some sort of chemistry and he wanted to make the best of it.

“It can’t be, my sister found a husband” Viola teased.

“Your sister is not good?” Iker posed.

“She’s a little over the top” Viola mused “She can be loud and a little obnoxious, but her husband balances her out” she explained.

Iker nodded his head thoughtfully. “Have you told anyone about me?” he posed softly.

“Like who?” Viola posed.

Iker offered a small shrug. “I don’t know. I just wondered is all” he explained.

“My sister” Viola noted “I wanted to talk to someone who wasn’t going to tell me that they told me so, so I steered clear of Pilar and Sergio and opted to talk to Amelia about you. She seemed all for it” she enthused.

Iker smiled a little, slightly reassured by the notion that Viola’s sister was on side. He knew that it was soon, they’d only known each other for a matter of weeks, but he already knew that he didn’t want to be a problem. Just from the way that Viola spoke, her family was important to her and he didn’t want to cause an issue.

Viola admired the slightly impish smile he wore and shook her head. She could see herself getting to like his smile. “What about you?” she posed gently.

“I didn’t tell anyone, Sergio did” Iker replied “He was showing your picture off at training the other day” he added.

Viola shook her head. “He’s got a picture of me?” she posed.

“It was one of you and Pilar” Iker clarified “I’d be slightly worried if he had a picture of just you on his phone” he teased.

Viola shook her head, quipping something about not putting it passed the defender, before they rounded the corner, reaching the foot of her apartment building.

“This is the place?” Iker posed, looking up at the building ahead of him.

“It is” Viola confirmed “You’re very sweet for having walked me back” she added with a small smile.

“It’s kind of my job now to make sure you’re OK” Iker replied with another warm smile “Besides, after dinner, I wasn’t quite ready for the night to end” he added.

“You could come upstairs” Viola offered, her expression a little shy “For coffee, and I mean coffee” she added.

Iker shook his head. “It’s a tempting offer, but I kind of have to get home. I’ve got training in the morning” he mused softly.

Viola nodded quietly, something which made Iker step forwards, his spare gloved hand cupping the red skin of her cheek. “I’ll take a raincheck though” he murmured, shifting a little closer to her “I’d love to come for coffee sometime” he added with a grin.

Viola smiled. “I’ll see you sometime soon then?” she teased.

“You try and keep me away” Iker replied playfully “Seriously, Viola, I would love to spend more time with you” he added more sincerely.

Viola smiled a little at the sentiment and pushed herself up onto her toes, pressing a warm kiss against his lips. Iker startled a little at the contact, not entirely expecting it, before he carefully brushing his thumb across her cheekbone, earning a small smile on her face. “I had a lovely time” she grinned as she pulled away from him, her blue eyes warm and affectionate “I’ll see you” she added before she carefully pulled away from him, making her way into the building which stood behind them.

Iker attentively watched her inside the building before he turned on his heel, making his way back up the street towards his car which he had parked a little away from Viola’s building. It had been another good night, even if there had been a couple of moments where Viola hadn’t seemed sure of herself, and Iker had to admit that it had left him in a good mood. They worked, even if it was the tentative early stages of a relationship, and he wanted to take his time with it. He had a feeling that he had a good thing in Viola and didn’t want to mess it up by running into it head first.
