Don’t Let Me Let You Go

28: Not Enough

Pulling out the seat at the restaurant table, Iker offered Viola a slightly awkward smile, helping her to sit down. It had been a quiet day, since their talk the previous night, Viola had barely said two words to Iker, but he wasn’t entirely surprised. It had caught her off guard, his news had come out of nowhere, and he could see that she was still working to digest it, along with his offer to go along with him, he could see her mind ticking. Carefully tucking her seat in, he padded around to his own seat and sat down, offering her another half-hearted smile.

“We could have just stayed at the villa” Viola murmured, fiddling with her water glass shyly.

“I’ve had this dinner planned since we landed, Lala. It makes no sense to see it go to waste” Iker refuted gently “Besides, I’ve barely seen you all day. I want to spend time with you” he explained, his hand moving to take hers which still nervously played with the glass.

Viola watched his hand before she let out a little sigh. “I’m sorry” she murmured “I can’t quite get my mind off of what you told me last night” she added.

“I don’t blame you, Lala, it’s a pretty big deal” Iker noted, his thumb carefully brushing the back of her hand “But we should talk about it. We can’t just pretend that it is not happening” he added.

“You seemed content to do that before, Iker” Viola countered, offering him a small glare.

“I didn’t want to ruin our vacation, Lala” Iker defended gently “I wanted to enjoy the next two weeks and then talk about it. I thought I was doing the right thing” he insisted. He knew that it wasn’t the best plan, hiding anything from Viola was bound to upset her, but he had thought that it was the right call to make. He knew that things were likely to be different, even if they didn’t fall apart entirely, and he wanted to put off a talk about their future as a couple until they were back home.

“You should have told me as soon as you knew” Viola murmured “I’m your girlfriend, Iker” she added.

“I know” he murmured “And I am sorry, but please, Lala, we need to talk about this” he insisted.

Viola peeked at him shyly before she nodded her head, her blue eyes turning to study the menu which sat in her hand.

“I am going to go, Lala” Iker insisted quietly.

“I know you are” Viola noted “As soon as you told me, I knew you would go. You’re not the type who would be happy sat on the bench, Iker, you need to play and if Madrid aren’t going to give you that…you have to go” she insisted.

“Then why are you being so quiet with me?” Iker posed, motioning towards a wine choice on the menu which the waiter to his left was offering to him.

Viola sighed. “You asked me to go with you, Iker” she murmured.

“I’d like you to” Iker admitted “Viola, you and me are good. It’s a good thing, and I don’t want to let it go. I love you and I don’t see why it couldn’t work” he insisted firmly. He knew that it was a big step, he and Viola had only been dating for 6 months, but he already knew that if he left Madrid then he wanted her to follow him. He loved her, and, as far as he was concerned, their relationship was serious enough for her to contemplate the notion of following him to Porto.

“It’s been 6 months” Viola argued softly as she pointed out what she wanted to order from the menu “Iker, that’s no time at all” she insisted.

“It’s enough time for me to know what I want, Lala” Iker refuted gently “Viola, I see my future with you. I see a proposal, a wedding, a family, and I know it. I know that it is soon, but I want to be with you for a long time to come yet” he insisted.

“You see all of that?” Viola squeaked.

“If I am honest, I have seen it with you for a while, Lala” Iker agreed with a small nod “I love you, Lala, and this can’t come as the biggest surprise to you. I am not messing around, I haven’t been since we started dating, and I thought you wanted something serious too?” he countered.

“I do” Viola noted “But when I envisioned it, it didn’t include you turning around after 6 months and asking me to leave my home for you. I love you, Iker, you know that but…”

“Not enough to come with me” Iker interjected, shaking his head.

“Iker…”

“It’s OK” the keeper mumbled, his voice hurt “I shouldn’t have asked it of you. It is soon” he babbled before he quietly slipped his wallet out of his pocket, placing a generous amount of money on the table “You should eat here. I am going to go back to the villa and take a nap. Buenos noches, Lala” he muttered before he pressed a swift kiss to the top of her head and sped out of the restaurant.

Viola watched after him for a moment before she shook her head, letting a small frustrated noise fall out of her mouth. She hadn’t meant to upset him, she hated that she had, but the offer to move to Portugal with him had caught her off guard. She adored him, the relationship that they were in was the best one she had ever been in, but it was still new. 6 months was no time at all to Viola and certainly not enough for her to give her agreement to leave behind her home for Iker.

Shaking her head, she offered a half-hearted smile towards the waiter who had moved to place her entrée down ahead of her before she closed her eyes, knowing that that night was make or break for her relationship with Iker.
