Don’t Let Me Let You Go

36: In My Own Way

Pulling her blonde hair up into a loose knot, Viola sat down on her couch, her blue eyes peeking at the laptop which was perched beside her. She knew that the call was coming, Iker, as always, was remarkably punctual, but still she was a little nervous about talking to him. She knew that Pilar had a point, from what she knew of Iker, he would never cut Sergio out for no reason, but still the notion of broaching the topic with him unsettled her. She didn’t want to appear nosy or start a fight. Chewing on her lip, she briefly contemplated the notion of skipping the call before the sound of the dial tone echoed, causing her to sigh before she pressed the accept button.

“Viola” Iker greeted gently.

“Hola, mi amor” Viola smiled softly “You’re on time” she added.

Iker smiled. “I’m very rarely late” he teased brightly “How was your day?” he added, offering her another soft smile.

Viola marveled at his face for a moment before she forced a small smile. “It was nice” she mused “Lucas and his wife found out that they’re expecting a little girl in a few months, and Henry and Emma are already talking about starting a family. I’m going to have loads of nieces and nephews running around soon” she enthused, trying not to sound distracted.

Iker smiled “Perhaps a son or a daughter too” he enthused.

Viola’s cheeks warmed a little before she shook her head. “Not for a while yet, hombre” she returned.

Iker chuckled. “How was shopping with Pilar?” he posed.

“It was alright” Viola enthused softly “But she said something, Iker, something I want to ask you about and I don’t want you thinking I am trying to pry. Don’t be upset?” she posed.

Iker tilted his head. “Lala?” he posed.

“You’re not talking to Sergio” Viola noted.

Iker stared at the screen for a moment before he shook his head, a small sigh falling out of his mouth.

“That’s not like you, Iker” Viola insisted gently “You and Sergio…”

“He got to stay, Lala” Iker interjected “I had to leave Madrid and he’s still there, and captain too. I know it is petty, but, for a little while at least, I just want to get used to the way things are. I’m a little irked at a few of them, but it will pass and when it does, I will call Sergio and tell him what I just said to you, but I am not going to do it now. I know you want to make sure that I am Ok, and I appreciate that, but I need to handle this my way, Lala, and you need to let me do it” he insisted.

Viola studied his face, noting the seriousness of his expression, and nodded her head. “Alright” she agreed “But I suggest you call him and tell him soon. I wouldn’t put it past him to get on a plane and bang down your door” she added, offering him a light smile.

Iker shook his head, a light laugh tumbling out of his mouth, a sound which relieved Viola. “I like your laugh” she enthused.

Iker smiled. “I bought you a ticket” he enthused “You’re due to fly out here next Friday and depart the following Monday” he noted.

“So you’ll have me for a whole weekend?” Viola teased “Are you sure that I won’t mess up your lovely new apartment?” she added.

Iker shook his head. “I know that you will” he insisted “But that’s a little bit of the reason I want you here so much. I’ve missed having to clear up your clothes when you leave them lying around” he added, poking his tongue out teasingly.

Viola scoffed. “You’re the one who leaves his things everywhere” she protested “You’ve been gone for a month and I am still finding your stuff here” she added dramatically.

Iker laughed loudly, a sound which instantly made Viola smile. She had missed it, for weeks, Iker’s laugh had seemed forced and false, but hearing it made Viola grin. For the first time in a little while, he seemed to be himself again, something which thrilled Viola. She had missed the happier, more confident side of her boyfriend.

“You’re smiling at me, nena” Iker teased.

“You seem better today” Viola returned “I mean, I know that you don’t like talking about it, but for a little while, I was worried about you, and it is nice to hear you laugh. I’d missed it” she explained softly.

Iker shook his head and pushed a hand back through his hair, letting another sigh fall out of his mouth. “It sucks, Lala” he murmured “I’m here, away from everything I know, and I am not used to it yet, but it is just going to take some time. I know it is where I need to be right now and I will get used to it eventually” he explained.

“I know you will” Viola enthused “If there is one guy who can handle this, it is you. You’re the strongest guy I know” she grinned.

“It means a lot to me to hear you say that, mi querida” Iker enthused with a soft smile.

Viola grinned back at him, causing him to shake his head. “You have no idea how much I want to kiss you right now” he mumbled.

“You only have to wait another week” Viola chirped “And then you have a whole weekend with me” she enthused.

“A weekend isn’t very long” Iker mused.

“It’s something” Viola noted “And, for a little while…”

“Something will be better than nothing” Iker finished for her, offering her a small boyish smile.

Viola nodded her head. “I will call you first thing tomorrow” she insisted “And I will see you in a week” she enthused.

Iker smiled gently and nodded. “I will see you then, Lala. I love you” he noted gently.

Viola smiled softly at the three words before she placed her hand to her lips, blowing a kiss towards the screen before she ended the call, a small knot playing in the pit of her stomach. She knew that it was on her, the reason that’s they were apart was solely hers, but the more they spoke to each other, the more she began to think she had perhaps gotten it a little wrong. She missed Iker, even if she tried her hardest not to let it show, and she wanted it to stop. A part of her wanted to be with him.
