Don’t Let Me Let You Go

61: Three Years Too Late

“You have a nice place here, Lala” Alex mused as he padded around the living room, his eyes surveying it interestedly “I assume that the footballer paid for it” he added, turning to face the blonde who stood in the door way, her hands fiddling nervously.

Viola, who stood a little away from him, shook her head. “If you’re just going to bad mouth him, you can go” she mumbled “I do not need your opinion on my boyfriend” she added.

Alex nodded. “Alright” he mused “I won’t insult him” he agreed.

“Why are you here, Alex?” Viola mumbled “I highly doubt that you’ve come to offer me and Iker your congratulations, so what possessed you to climb onto a flight to Porto?” she posed, her arms folded across her chest.

Alex smirked. “You always did look amazing when you were mad” he teased.

“Alexander” Viola warned.

Alex chuckled. “Can’t a guy just want to see his old friend?” he mused.

“Not when that ‘old friend’ is actually an old ex-girlfriend, and not when that girlfriend is engaged to another man and pregnant with his child. What are you doing here, Alex?” Viola repeated.

Alex sighed. “You never did miss a trick, did you?” he posed.

“Alex” Viola repeated.

“I missed you, OK?” Alex muttered, his green eyes fixed on his feet.

Viola frowned.

“After I saw you the other day, I couldn’t stop thinking about you, Lala. I know it’s been a while…”

“It’s been 3 years, Alex, more than 3 years” Viola interrupted.

“I know” Alex mumbled “And I know that you and the footballer are happy, your madre never shuts up about the pair of you, but I just figured if I could talk to you…maybe I could get it out of my system. I miss you, Viola, I have done for a little while now and when I saw you…you’d got even more beautiful if that was possible” he babbled gently. He felt stupid saying it, it had been years since he and Viola had been an item, but seeing her had got him thinking, something which had encouraged his decision to fly to Porto to see her. He missed her, he had done for a little while, and their encounter in the restaurant, no matter how brief, had merely reaffirmed it for him.

Viola shook her head. “You couldn’t come up with this 3 years ago?” she murmured.

“I was an idiot, Lala” Alex murmured.

Viola rolled her eyes. “Spare the shit, Alex” she muttered “You were the one who ended it, the one who claimed I was pushing too much, and now you’ve had a sudden epiphany?” she added.

Alex shook his head. “I messed up” he mused.

“And you’ve waited until now to realise that?” Viola countered “It’s been three years, Alex, three long years, and now that I am settled and happy with a man who I think the world of, you show up?” she added, her voice sharp.

“Do you know what Iker means to me?” Viola murmured “Do you know how long it took me to find a guy like him after you?” she posed.

“I know that you had Pilar set you up” Alex noted.

“I didn’t date for two years, Alex, two long years it took me to decide that I needed to move past you and then, just as things seem so perfect for me and the man I adore, you show up, telling me how you messed up and how you miss me. Why, Alex? You know that I am engaged, you know that I am pregnant, so why would you come all the way here?” she hissed.

Alex sighed. “I don’t want you to make a mistake” he noted simply.

“And you waited until I was happy to tell me that?” Viola snapped “What right do you have to say a thing about my relationship, Alex?” she added, shaking her head a little.

“I want to make things better, Lala” Alex murmured, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.

Viola scoffed. “You don’t want that” she muttered “You just think you do because I have moved forwards with my life, I’m happy, and you’re still alone. What happened, Alex? Did all the girls in Madrid see through the act?” she shot at him.

“You know you’re the girl I love, it’s always been you, Lala” Alex noted.

Viola shook her head. “It’s funny how it has always been me now that I am happy, Alex” she refuted “You had years to change your mind, to tell me that you still wanted me…” Viola’s words fell away as Alex stepped towards her, his hands cupping her cheeks before he pressed his lips to hers. Viola startled a little at the feel of his hands against her skin and his lips over hers before she came to her senses, pushing him back. “Bastardo” she cursed.

Alex sighed. “I want you, Viola” he murmured “I want you more than ever and I know I could make you happy, happier than your footballer could” he murmured.

Viola, who was staring at her feet, shook her head.

“I was the first, Viola” Alex rambled “I was your first boyfriend, your first love, surely that means something to you” he insisted.

“Maybe it did, once” Viola murmured “But now? Alex, I’ve found the man I want to spend my life with, the man I want to have a family with, and I am not going to abandon that for a man who has only realised that he wants me because he knows that he can’t have me. I’m happy, Alex, really happy with Iker and no amount of pleading is going to change my mind. He’s what I want” she insisted softly.

“You’re really going to marry him?” Alex mumbled.

“I’m really going to marry him” Viola confirmed “And I am really going to have his baby” she added, her hand gently brushing over the bump which she sported beneath her shirt.

Alex smiled a little. “I am happy for you, Viola” he noted gently “You deserve to get your happily ever after, I just wish…”

“You’re 3 years too late, Alex” Viola interrupted.

Alex nodded stoutly. “I am” he confirmed “But if your footballer…”

“Iker” Viola corrected.

“If Iker ever messes up, I’d love it if you called me” Alex enthused as he stepped towards her “I hope he makes you as happy as you deserve to be, Lala” he mumbled tenderly before he kissed her cheek, missing her lips by mere millimetres. Viola leant into the contact briefly before she pulled back, offering Alex a slight smile.

“I think he will” Viola noted, straightening her shirt a little.

Alex nodded. “I’ll see you, Lala” he mumbled before he stepped out of the apartment, closing the door with a small thump.

Viola watched after him before she let out a small sigh, knowing that she had to tell Iker about Alex’s visit, something she already knew would not go down well with the goalkeeper.
