Don’t Let Me Let You Go

63: Distract Me

“How are you feeling?” Viola posed as she sat down beside Iker, offering him a little smile. It was early, with the final scheduled for later that day, Iker had been awake for most of the night, and Viola hadn’t been surprised to find him stood outside of her door at 6 in the morning, even if his knocking had startled her, she was only a little surprised that it hadn’t come sooner.

Iker, who’d been messing with the breakfast she had ordered, shrugged. “Anxious” he mumbled.

“You have nothing to be concerned about” Viola murmured gently “You’ve already done more than you did in the last world cup and that was all anyone really wanted. Winning would be lovely, but no one is going to be upset if you don’t” she reassured him gently.

Iker shrugged. “I would be upset” he mumbled.

“That’s because you are you” Viola replied, taking a piece of toast from his plate “You’re never going to accept that everyone else thinks the world of you, you’re going to keep pushing to be even better and that’s why I love you. You’re a stubborn one, but you don’t give up and it’s a good quality” she mused.

Iker snorted. “You’re going to talk to me about being stubborn?” he quipped, offering her a slight smirk.

Viola nodded. “Today I am” she teased.

Iker chuckled a little before he moved to pick at the plate of food once more. “I’ve been thinking, you know” he murmured.

Viola, who’d reclined a little in her seat, quirked an eyebrow. “Should I be worried?” she posed.

“No” Iker noted “But I wanted to tell you first before I told anyone else” he added.

“Iker?” Viola pressed.

“Win or lose, I am going to retire from internationals after the match tonight” Iker noted gently.

Viola sat up a little. “You are?” she posed gently. It was a surprise, as far as she had been aware, Iker intended to play for a little while yet, and the notion that he was prepared to give up playing for Spain had caught her a little off guard. As far as she had known, he adored being the captain of the national side and it wasn’t something he would give up on lightly.

Iker nodded. “I’m 35” the keeper noted “And there are a couple of younger guys who are itching to take my spot. With Del Bosque likely to leave, they’d all speculate anyways and I think it is the right time. I’ve done everything with this team, Lala, I’ve achieved all I wanted to achieve and I think the time is right to go. You don’t?” he posed.

“I think it is your call” Viola replied “And that if this is what you want, I’ll be behind you 100%” she added.

Iker smiled and rested back a little into his seat, allowing Viola to rest her feet in his lap. “How are you feeling?” he mumbled, carefully massaging her skin.

“I’m fine” Viola mused “I’ve not felt sick for a few days and the aches and pains are minimal. He’s going easy on his mama” she enthused, carefully rubbing her bump.

Iker smiled. “I can’t wait to meet him” he mused gently “I know we’ve still got a little way to go, but I cannot wait to meet him for the very time” he added.

“I am sure he’ll be handsome like his papi” Viola smiled as she leant over slightly, kissing his cheek.

Iker smiled and brushed his hand over her bump. “Have you thought of a name yet?” he posed.

Viola shook her head. “You have more important things to worry about today, senor” she teased, poking his side playfully “Naming him can wait” she added.

“I want to” Iker noted “If I sit here and think about the game, I am going to get worked up and that’s not going to end well. I want you to distract me for a little while” he insisted, resting his head back a little.

Viola shook her head. “What do you want me to do?” she posed.

“Baby names” Iker noted “You must have come up with something” he added.

“A few” Viola shrugged “But I figured we could wait. He’s still 4 months away from joining us and we’ve not even got a nursery yet. I figured his name would come last” she mused. They were a little underprepared, since they’d found out about their baby, they’d made very little progress, and Viola was sure that his name would be the last thing they came up with. It seemed a little less urgent than creating a nursery or buying the essentials.

“Tell me what you’ve come up with, Lala” Iker murmured, his hands still gently massaging her feet.

Viola shrugged. “I’ve not liked many” she noted “But I have a few that I have been thinking about. I liked James, Oliver, Theo, but my favourite has to be Arthur” she mused.

Iker lifted an eyebrow. “Arthur?” he posed.

Viola shrugged. “I don’t know what it is about it, but every time I think about a name for him, I land back on Arthur. It’s a little old-fashioned, but I kind of liked that about it” she enthused softly.

“Arthur” Iker repeated gently “Arthur Casillas Garcia” he mumbled.

“You don’t have to go agree, Iker” Viola noted “We’ve still got a little while to come up with something, but this is my favourite so far. Feel free to come up with something else” she enthused as she moved to her feet, mumbling something about needing a sweater.

Iker mulled the name over for a moment, mouthing it to himself before the sound of a squeak emanated away from Viola’s bedroom. Frowning, he pushed himself to his feet and hurried into the room, his dark eyes widening a little at the sight of the blonde who was huddled over, a frown fixed on her face. “Viola?” he posed.

Viola merely shifted a little, her hand resting gently over her bump.

“Viola” he murmured “Is something wrong? Do I need to get Pilar up to take you to a doctor?” he fussed.

Viola stayed still.

“Viola, I swear, I will get you whatever you need, just say the word” he insisted, stepping a little closer.

“Stop fretting” Viola mused, shaking her head.

“You’re not exactly giving me a reason not to fret” Iker countered.

Viola shook her head. “Your son has just said his very first hello” she noted.

Iker straightened up a little. “What?” he spluttered.

Viola giggled a little. “Your son has just kicked for the first time” she explained, standing up a little.

“He did?” Iker posed.

“It’s been coming for a few days” Viola noted “I figured he would do it after I got here, but it caught me a little off guard. I didn’t mean to scare you” she mused, wrapping her sweater around her shoulders.

Iker watched her for a moment before he took her hand, helping her to lay down on the bed before he crawled up beside her, scooting the material of her pyjama top away from her bump.

“You have to go soon” Viola mused, her fingers messing with his hair.

“I know” Iker replied “But right now, I want to say hello to our son” he grinned.

Viola shook her head, smiling a little as he pressed a kiss to her stomach, cooing gently to her bump.
