Don’t Let Me Let You Go

66: Any Day Now

“Can I get you anything, Viola?” Elena fussed as she padded around her daughter’s living room, clearing away a few loose papers which sat around. It had been a few months and with Viola’s due date moving ever closer, Elena and Gerardo had arrived in Porto, desperate not to miss the day which would see their first grandson enter the world.

Viola, who had her feet up, shook her head. “I’ve just finished the last mug of tea you made and the last piece of toast. I think I will be OK for a little while” she noted.

Elena nodded and moved to sit down in the armchair which stood a little away from her daughter.

“You know that you can go back to your hotel if you want to, madre” Viola noted. She was grateful, for almost a week, Iker had insisted that someone stay with her whilst he was away at training, and she appreciated the gesture, but a little part of her felt a little irked. She knew why he wanted someone to keep an eye on her, with Porto involved in the Champions’ league as well as the league, he was in training almost every day and he didn’t want to run the risk of her being alone when she wanted into labour, but she missed her privacy, something Elena was reluctant to give her.

“I promised your lovely fiancé that I could keep an eye on you until he got back” Elena commented as she moved to find the television remote “You’re not too far away now” she added.

“You’ve pointed that out more than once” Viola commented, trying not to roll her eyes. She had grown steadily tired of people pointing out just how pregnant she was.

“Iker just wants to make sure that you’ve got someone, Lala” Elena mused “He doesn’t want you to go into labour without someone to help you” she insisted.

“And I appreciate the gesture, but I don’t think I am going to go into labour in the next hour. If you wanted to, you could go back to hotel and spend some time with Papa. I’ll be fine by myself” Viola insisted gently.

“I’ll be fine, mama” Viola insisted gently.

“I promised him, Viola” Elena noted.

Viola sighed a little, but nodded, trying to get a little more comfortable in her seat.

“Have you and Iker decided on a name yet?” Elena posed. It had been a while, since the summer, she and Gerardo had only seen their youngest daughter fleetingly, and Elena wanted to enjoy a little time with her before the baby came along. It was bound to be the last time she got alone with her daughter for a little while.

“We’ve been batting them around for a little while” Viola noted “But we’ve not decided anything. Iker wants to see him first before we choose it” she explained, her hand gently rubbing her large bump.

Elena watched the small movement of her hand and shook her head. “I cannot believe you’re going to give me my first grandson, Lala” she fussed gently “I was so sure that Lia or Henry would have a baby before you” she added.

Viola shook her head. “Neither can I, mama” she murmured softly “I mean, I love that I am and I cannot wait to meet him, but I cannot quite believe that this is how things are a little under two years after I met Iker” she enthused. She had had a good feeling about them, even after their slightly haphazard blind date, she had had a good feeling about them, but she was still a little amazed by where she sat a little under 2 years since she had met the goalkeeper.

“He’s been good for you” Elena mused.

Viola nodded. “It’s cliché, but he’s the best thing that could have happened” she enthused softly.

“He’s a good man, Lala” Elena enthused “Your papa can’t speak highly enough of him, and that’s saying something. Your padre still isn’t convinced by Max and he and Amelia have been together for years” she added.

Viola smiled a little before she felt a small kick pelt her hand, something which made her squeak.

“Lala?” Elena fussed.

“He’s kicking” Viola noted, trying to ease her mother’s mind “He does that a lot. Iker’s already plotting to get him enrolled in the academy at Madrid” she added, a small smile playing at the corner of her mouth.

Elena smiled gently at her daughter and took a step forwards, resting her hand on her bump as her grandson continued to move. “He’s an active little thing” she fussed.

“When he wants to be. For the first month after he kicked, he would never do it whilst Iker was around. He was convinced the baby hated him” Viola giggled gently.

Elena smiled. “I am proud of you, Viola” she murmured gently, her blue eyes marvelling at her youngest slightly. It amazed her, the idea that Viola had come as far as she had, and Elena couldn’t deny that she was more than a little proud of her. It had taken her a lot of work to get over Alex, but what she had forged with Iker was good for her and Elena wanted her to know it. She was more than proud that her little girl had found such a content and comfortable relationship with a man who clearly thought the world of her.

“You are?” Viola squeaked.

“Incredibly” Elena noted “After Alex, a lot of people were worried that you’d not try and move on, but then, through Pilar, you found Iker and I am so proud of the two of you. You make the sweetest couple and I am sure that, when the moment comes, you’ll make the best parents. This little guy, he’s going to be so loved” she fussed.

“He is” Viola noted softly “Mama, when he comes, you’ll help, won’t you?” she fussed gently.

Elena lifted an eyebrow.

“I know that eventually, me and Iker are going to have this baby to look after by ourselves, but for the first few days, will you be here?” Viola posed shyly. She didn’t want to admit it, not when Iker seemed so confident, but a large part of her was terrified about what would happen after the baby was born. Part of her was certain that she would find a way to mess up.

Elena smiled a little. “You’re going to be fine, Lala” she mused, brushing the blonde hair out of her daughter’s face.

“I’m going to have a baby, mama” Viola protested gently “He’s going to depend on me to look after him” she fretted gently.

Elena nodded. “He is” she confirmed gently “But you and Iker are going to be able to handle it. You two are bright, you’re warm and caring, and you’ll be fine. There’s no exact science to it, Lala, I always remember when me and your papa took Lucas home for the first time, we just stared at him for an hour, not sure what to do, but we just acted by instinct. You pick it up, mi hija, and you and Iker will too” she insisted gently as she squeezed Viola’s hand a little.

Viola glanced at her mother unsurely before she nodded.

“I’ll stay for the first two days” Elena offered softly “But you’re going to have to do it alone eventually, mi hija” she mused.

“I know” Viola confirmed.

Elena smiled and kissed the side of Viola’s head, mumbling soft reassurances in her ear.

She was sure that her daughter and goalkeeper would be fine when their little boy made his first appearance.
