Don’t Let Me Let You Go

79: The Right Dress

“Are you sure that you don’t mind keeping an eye on him, papa?” Viola posed as she peeked at her father, her arms gently bouncing Arthur who was sniffling a little, preparing to let out another round of cries. It wasn’t the first time, in the 5 days that they had been in Madrid, Arthur had been fussier than normal, and Viola didn’t want to burden her father who had taken a week away from work to relax.

“Mind?” Gerardo noted “Sweetheart, I would love to spend time with my little grandson. Your brothers are going to be here, Mollie too, and I will be more than able to cope with him. He’s 3 months old, it’s not like he can get away from me” he smiled.

“I don’t want to ruin your week off” Viola murmured, gently smoothing out Arthur’s hair.

“I took the week off to spend it with the two of you, Lala” Gerardo smiled “And with your mother insisting that she take you dress shopping this morning, I would be more than happy to take care of little Arthur. I don’t see nearly enough of you, Lala, and I want to enjoy the time I do get. You should go, your madre has gathered your sister, your sisters-in-law, Iker’s mother and Pilar, and they’re all itching to get you a dress. If I run into a problem, I will call” he insisted softly.

Viola offered him a slightly dubious look before she nodded, carefully settling Arthur into his grandfather’s arms. “We shouldn’t be gone long” she mused.

Gerardo snorted. “You’re looking for the dress you’ll wear on your wedding day. I’d be surprised if you were home before this evening” he teased.

Viola shook her head. “I will try and keep it short” she insisted softly “And if you need me…”

“I will call” Gerardo smiled “Lala, you’re about to go and find your wedding dress, you should be excited” he enthused.

Viola smiled. “I am” she confirmed “A little amazed that I am going to look for a wedding dress, but I am excited” she enthused.

“Then enjoy it” Gerardo mused as he shifted Arthur a little, trying to get him a little more comfortable “You’re only going to go through this once” he added.

Viola scoffed a little. “You underestimate my ability to mess up my first marriage, Papa” she teased half-heartedly.

Gerardo shook his head. “You’re not going to mess up, Lala” he mused as he carefully stood up, resting Arthur into the seat that Elena had bought for the little boy “You’ve been with Iker for over 2 years now and you’re still as happy as ever. How could you mess up?” he posed gently.

Viola shrugged. “I wouldn’t put it past me” she noted.

Gerardo shook his head. “Lala, you know that that man loves you” he murmured “He wouldn’t have stuck around if he didn’t, and you need to believe it if you’re going to make it work with him. Iker looks at you like you’re the best thing in the world, he adores you and Arthur, and that’s in no doubt. You just need to believe it, Lala” he insisted gently.

Viola eyed her father for a moment before she nodded.

“You’re going to be great at this, Viola” Gerardo smiled as he padded towards her “I know it” he enthused before he pulled her into a tight hug.

Viola hugged him tightly and nodded her head, feeling reassured by his words. They were fleeting, the moment where she doubted her ability to make a marriage work, but she knew that her father was right. Iker had stuck it out for 2 years, 2 years more than Viola had envisaged he would, and she did need to believe that they could make it work. They had until then and there was no reason why it would change.

Brushing her hands down the side of the dress she wore, Viola smiled a little, a little in awe of the image of herself in a wedding dress. It had been a long morning, between the two mothers, Viola’s sisters and Pilar, various opinions had been banded around which had led them to visit 3 different wedding dress stores, but at last Viola felt as though they had found the one. It was what she wanted, the material was a soft cream as opposed to the more traditional white, and the detailing was minimal, but still beautiful, and Viola felt amazing stood in it, something she hadn’t felt in the other dresses that she had tried on.

“Are you going to come out of there at some point?”

Viola, who’d been caught up in admiring her appearance, startled a little at the sound of Pilar’s voice before she turned, slipping the latch on the dressing room door open.

Pilar, who was leaning against the wall outside, smiled a little, her eyes admiring the dress which hugged Viola’s frame. “Wow” she squeaked.

“I know” Viola fussed “It’s wonderful, no?” she posed, chewing on her lip nervously.

“Stunning” Pilar smiled “I mean, you’re a pretty girl anyways, but that dress…we should show the others” she grinned as she moved to take Viola’s hand, helping her through into the main body of the store where the other women sat, enjoying the bottle of complimentary champagne they’d been plied with. “Ladies” Pilar mused, capturing their attention.

Viola, who stood quietly behind her friend, smiled a little as the group of women flicked their attention to her, small smiles playing on each of their faces as they studied her appearance. “So?” she teased softly.

Elena grinned. “Princesa, I don’t think I have seen you more beautiful” she fussed softly.

Viola shook her head, her cheeks a little pink.

Elena smiled and moved to stand up, studying the dress as she padded around her daughter.

“I think my son is a lucky man” Carmen commented gently.

Viola smiled. “I like to think so” she murmured softly.

“I know so” Carmen grinned “Look at you, Viola, you’re so beautiful and I can imagine his face when he sees this. He’s going to be speechless” she fussed.

Viola blushed a little before she peeked down at the dress, her hands messing with it softly. “I think I want to pay for this one” she murmured, a grin playing at the corner of her mouth.

Elena nodded and moved to hug her daughter, grinning brightly.

She couldn’t quite believe that her little girl was going to be married.
