Don’t Let Me Let You Go

08: You’re Doing OK

“You look lonely”

Viola, who’d been flicking through one of her fashion magazines, lifted her head, her blue eyes peeking up at Iker who stood ahead of her, a warm smile on his face. She had been thinking about it, after she’d gotten home the night before, all she had been able to think about was their date and the man she had enjoyed spending her time with, and she had to admit she was pleased to see him. A little part of her had thought that he might not show up.

“Do you mind if I sit down?” Iker posed, gesturing to the seat opposite hers.

“Of course not” Viola noted “How are you?” she added.

Iker shrugged. “It’s been an OK day” he noted as he moved to hang his coat off of the back of his seat “I’ve been a little preoccupied though. I keep thinking about this girl” he added with a teasing grin that turned Viola’s cheeks pink, a sight he found more than slightly adorable. “Seriously though, I’m glad to see you. A little part of me worried that you might not want to come” he added.

Viola tilted her head. “I invited you” she countered “Why wouldn’t I show up?” she asked.

Iker shrugged. “I don’t know” he admitted “I just worried. I’ve been looking forwards to this since you left last night and I convinced myself that I was getting ahead of myself…I must sound so stupid” he rambled, his cheeks warming a little.

“You don’t sound stupid” Viola assured him gently, a small smile on her lips “I kind of like the way you babble. I’ve been on enough dates with self-assured idiots, I like that you’re a little unsure, it’s cute” she added.

Iker smiled. “You think I am cute?” he teased, taking a sip from the coffee he’d purchased for himself.

Viola’s cheeks warmed a little. “Well…uh…yeah” she spluttered.

Iker smiled. “You’re not so bad yourself” he quipped, his tone still a little unsure.

Viola smiled. “You don’t tend to flirt, do you?” she teased, leaning forwards so that her elbows rested on the small table between them.

“It’s not a strength of mine” Iker noted “It’s obvious?” he added.

“A little” Viola agreed, sipping on her tea “But don’t worry, it adds to the slightly awkward thing you’ve got going on” she added with a smile.

Iker shook his head. He couldn’t quite understand why Viola would be taken with the bumbling nervous version of himself that he’d shown to her on their two dates.

“Have you ever thought about playing anywhere other than in Madrid?” Viola posed as she walked alongside Iker, her blue eyes peeking up at him curiously. It had been a nice afternoon, after their dinner the previous night, their coffee date felt more comfortable and free flowing, and Viola had to admit that, when he was relaxed, she found Iker pleasant to be around. He was thoughtful, intelligent and kind, and she had a feeling that she owed Pilar a small thank you. Even if it didn’t blossom into a romantic relationship, the brunette had found her a lovely friend.

“Never” Iker replied simply “I’ve been at Madrid for years and I can’t quite see myself anywhere else. This is home” he insisted.

“You’ve never thought about going abroad?” Viola asked.

Iker shook his head. “I’m happy here” he insisted “It would take something pretty substantial to make me go. Why do you ask?” he noted.

Viola shrugged. “I was interested. I don’t know much about football, but I know that people tend to go abroad and I was wondering if that was something which was on your radar” she explained.

“Well, right this second, no” Iker confirmed.

Viola nodded her head and took a couple of steps ahead of him, something which caused him to stretch out his arm, carefully capturing her smaller gloved hand. “What is it that you do again?” he noted as he carefully laced his fingers through hers, holding her small hand close.

“I’m a stylist” Viola noted proudly.

Iker smiled, not missing the way her blue eyes lit up at the mention of her job. “You love it” he mused.

“I do” Viola confirmed “Since I was little, I’ve always had an interest in fashion and whilst it isn’t quite what was I looking to do, I’ve come to love it” she enthused, her grin wide and enthusiastic.

“You’ve got adorable dimples” Iker blurted out.

Viola tilted her head, a little caught off guard.

“Sorry” Iker mumbled “I’ve really got to work on being able to talk to you” he added, mentally cursing himself.

Viola shook her head and stopped walking, pulling him to a stop ahead of her. “You’ve got to stop worrying about every word that comes out of your mouth, Iker” she mused, her spare hand moving to take his which was stuffed awkwardly into his pocket “You’re not doing a bad job of this and you’ve got to get that into your head” she added, flashing him a warm smile.

Iker closed his eyes. “I don’t want to screw up like I did the other night” he mumbled.

Viola shook her head and stepped a little closer to him, pushing herself up onto her toes so that she could press a light kiss against his lips.

Iker startled at the contact, something which made Viola smile. “You’re doing a good job, Iker” she mused as she lowered herself down, offering him her most impish grin.

“I am?” he posed softly.

“I didn’t invite you out again for the sake of it” Viola mused as she moved to walk ahead of him once more.

Iker followed after her, his long strides catching up with her smaller ones easily. “I really don’t want to make a mess of this, Viola” he mused, his hand moving to pick hers up once more “I think we’ve got a good thing going on here” he added.

Viola nodded. “I agree with you” she mused “This could be something good, but I think we should still take our time with it” she added.

Iker nodded. “I can take my time” he agreed softly.

Viola smiled a little at his agreement before she pushed herself up onto her toes once more, pressing a careful kiss to his lips. She knew that there was something between them, she hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the man beside her after their date, but she didn’t want to put pressure on it. They were both novices, neither had dated for a while, and she didn’t want to barrel in only to regret it. Awkward or not, she kind of liked Iker and didn’t want to mess things up with him before they’d ever really gotten going.
