Don’t Let Me Let You Go

86: Everything Else Is Irrelevant

Staring at the alarm clock which sat on the end table at her side, Viola let out a small breath, watching as it ticked past 6 in the morning. She had been awake for a while, after a fragmented night’s sleep, she had found herself merely watching the clock, and she doubt that she would get much more sleep, even if she tried, the sheer amount of knots and butterflies which twitched in her stomach were likely to prevent it.

Studying the clock for a moment more, she shook her head a little before she turned over onto her side, glancing at the empty side of the bed. It had felt different, sleeping without her boyfriend beside her that night had felt different to all of the times it had happened before, but Viola was certain that that was a good thing. His not being there was a sign of just how close they were to becoming husband and wife and it was an idea that made the blonde smile.

“Are you awake yet?”

Viola jumped at the sound of Pilar’s voice and turned over, lifting her eyebrow slightly. “You know that it is six in the morning, right?” she posed, sitting up slightly.

Pilar nodded. “I know, but I am sharing the spare room with the other bridesmaids and they make a lot of noise in their sleep. Did you know that your sister talks in her sleep?” she posed as she quietly closed the door, moving to sit down beside Viola.

“I did know that” Viola nodded “Why do you think you’re all stuck in one room and I am in here?” she teased.

Pilar shook her head. “You could have warned me” she noted.

Viola smiled. “Where’s the fun in that?” she teased softly.

Pilar smiled. “You’re up early” she pointed out.

“Can’t sleep” Viola mused “I tried, for hours, but it’s just not happening” she added.

“Excited?” Pilar posed, shifting a little to get slightly more comfortable on the bed.

“That and increasingly nervous” Viola nodded gently. She knew that she had no reason to be nervous, Iker had insisted more than once that there was no chance that he would leave her there, but still she couldn’t shake the thought from her mind. Until they were face to face, she was sure that she would worry about him not showing up.

“You have nothing to worry about” Pilar insisted gently “Your madre is heading up to the venue this morning to coordinate set-up for the service and your sister is doing the same for the reception. All you need to concern yourself with is not crying. I am not explaining to your fiancé why you look miserable in your wedding pictures” she teased.

Viola quirked a feeble smile, her hands messing with the duvet which was still wrapped around her.

“He’s going to be there, you know” Pilar enthused, squeezing Viola’s hand gently “And if he isn’t, I am going to let Sergio find him. He wouldn’t get away with it” she insisted, not missing the look of trepidation on the blonde’s face. She knew that it worried her, it was what worried Iker too, but Pilar had no doubts. The two of them, to her mind at least, were meant to be and that day, even if it did have a few hiccups, was bound to end with the two of them as man and wife.

Viola nodded. “I know he will be” she insisted gently “I just think I’ll worry until I am actually stood there, looking at him” she mused.

Pilar nodded. “I get that” she noted “But for now, do you want to come and grab some breakfast? I think I heard your mother down stairs and I imagine she’s itching to get the chance to see her daughter, the blushing bride” she enthused.

Viola shook her head. “I’m really going to get married, aren’t I?” she posed.

Pilar let out a laugh. “Yeah, you are” she enthused.

“Did you get any sleep at all last night?” Sergio teased as he stepped into his kitchen, his hand jovially slapping Iker’s shoulder. He looked as though he had been there for a while, the coffee cup which sat at his side looked long empty, and it amused Sergio slightly. He doubted that he had seen Iker so nervous before.

“A few hours” Iker noted as he watched the defender pour him another mug of coffee “But when it past about 4, I just sat there, staring at the ceiling, thinking of the ways today could go wrong” he admitted.

“Why would it go wrong?” Sergio posed, placing some bread into the toaster “You do want to marry Viola, don’t you?” he added.

“Of course” Iker noted firmly.

“Then stop working yourself up. Even if things do go wrong, the important part of today is the part where you get to kiss Viola and walk away with her as your wife. Everything else is trivial compared to that” the defender enthused.

“I just want the day to be perfect for her” Iker noted, sipping his drink slightly “If it all works out, she’s only going to get to do this once and I want her to be able to look back in 20 years and grin about it” he explained.

“Iker, she will do” Sergio quipped, sliding a plate of toast towards him “Even if the shit does hit the fan, she’s always going to remember this day as the day she got to marry you, the man that, for some reason, she views as the love of her life” the defender quipped, offer his friend a cheeky smile.

Iker rolled his eyes.

“Seriously, Iker, this is a day that Viola’s not going to forget in a hurry, even if it does have a few bumps, she always going to smile about it because she got to marry you. Everything else is irrelevant” Sergio insisted.

“That might be the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me” Iker quipped, taking a bite of the toast that his friend had plied him with.

“I figured I would be nice now” Sergio shrugged “You’ve got to sit through my best man’s speech yet. I can’t wait to tell Lala just how handsy you got after the World Cup final” he added, grinning widely.

Iker groaned. “You’ve put that story in there?” he complained.

“How could I not? I want to see Lala’s face when she hears that you spent most of the night hugging and kissing the cheeks of everyone you could find, even Del Bosque who looked as though he wanted to kill you” Sergio grinned.

Iker let out another groan, something which made Sergio laugh. “Cheer up, Iker” he teased, slapping his shoulder once more “You’re about to get married” he added as he stepped out of the room.
