Like I'm Gonna Lose You

Lucy’s POV- New Years Eve 2013
“How’s Nashville?”

I took a sip of my beer and looked at Bobbi. Bobbi’s hair was slightly curled at the ends and she wore little make up. It was New Years Eve and every year someone hosted a New Years Eve party. Uncle Nick and Aunt Mel were hosting it.

“I’m about to murder my roommate” I told her.

She smiled at how serious I was. We were friends, but we were not close friends. The only reason she knew about Caleb was cause she overheard Alex and I talking about it. Alex was at UC Berkeley and Bobbi was at Stanford. They both understood my struggle as well because they were doing a form of engineering.

“What does she do that you don’t like?”

Everything.

“I’m all in for a good time, but not every single night. Shit she could have sex with her boyfriend everynight and I wouldn’t care, but she cheats on him with so many guys and she’s so overdramatic with her moans” I said.

She made a face and I nodded.

“I don’t know when she gets the time to do her homework and study” I said making her laugh.

“It was her first semester of GradSchool, maybe it will get better”

“I sure hope so, I just want to study in my room or in the living room without hearing her moan. I miss Elena and little Gabe. If he didn’t make as much noise, she could tone it down a bit cause he’s 4 years old” I said.

She laughed.

“She sounds like a dying cat” I told her making her laugh harder.

“So, are you still seeing Caleb?”

I shushed her and she looked around.

“No one is paying attention to us. Angela and Rosa are talking with your mom, and Alex still isn’t here yet”

I nodded and she smiled.

“So?”

I shook my head.

“No, he went back to England. He graduated in May and well he has some family business he needs to handle” I said.

She frowned and huffed.

“We stayed friends though” I said.

She laughed and raised an eyebrow.

“Friends don’t give each other mind blowing orgasms”

I shushed her and she laughed. I expected Bobbi to judge me when she found out. Instead she seemed comfortable with the situation.

“Good for you though”

I looked at her and she smiled.

“Have you talked to Jesse at all since?”

I shook my head and she sighed.

“Good. I want to meet a guy that shows me how to love myself”

I smiled and shrugged. Alex had a friend who was showing her how to love herself. Her boyfriend…well exboyfriend because they broke up before it happed. Enrique passed away the summer before we started our junior (3rd) year of college. They had been arguing because she caught him cheating on her and she was confronting him about it. She had broke up with him, and he collapsed into her. He died on impact of a brain aneurysm…in her arms. We were about 19 years old, and I know I hated the guy but I would never wished a death like that on anyone. Bobbi and Alex were bestfriends, but they werent as close as Bobbi and Kike were.

“How do you meet a guy like that?”

I laughed.

“Seriously, like it’s been a painfully long time since I’ve had sex”

I smiled and took a sip of my beer.

“I need a guy like that”

She hummed and I smiled.

“How do you not get feelings for a guy that looks like him though?”

I shrugged.

“We call each other up when we want to have sex, and after we grab a bite to eat. We’re not looking for a relationship” I said.

She nodded.

“What about that guy in your 8am?” I asked.

She frowned.

“He’s gay”

I laughed and she nodded.

“How’d you figure it out?” I asked.

“Mike told me, he apparantly serves him and his boyfriend all the time”

I laughed.

“How’s Mike doing?” I asked her.

Michael was Bobbi’s little brother. He was 4 years younger than us, and honestly puberty had done so well on him. He had just transferred to San Jose State from University of San Francisco. The Diamondbacks drafted him in the first round straight out of highschool. He quit baseball after his freshman year after a teammate at him purposely hurt him. He got a concussion and it was a career ending concussion. Not wanting to risk his heatlh with the help of Bobbi he got his transfer. He had a bright future ahead of him, and it ended in a matter of seconds. Both him and Bobbi lost their father when they were kids, and their mom hardly pays any attention to them. Bobbi knows her mom will never change, but Mike has this slight hope.

“He passed all his classes, all 22 units worth”

I shook my head and she nodded.

“Yea, he’s crazy”

I agreed and we smiled when we saw Alex making her way over.

“I’m so sorry I’m late. Mom and Dad were slightly interrogating me”

I waved her off and she hugged us.

“I’m going to go get more of this. Do you ladies want anything?”

I looked at Bobbi and nodded.

“Any fruity drink” I told her.

She nodded and turned to Bobbi who agreed. She left and I turned to her.

“How’s San Jose?” I asked her.

She looked around.

“Good, I got an internship with a top engineering company. Fingers crossed they can help me after gradschool”

I nodded.

“How’s your internship?”

“It’s alright” I said as she reached for my beer.

She took the last sip and nodded.

“Define alright?”

“I get treated well and I don’t do coffee runs” I said.

She smiled.

“That’s great, so you’ve gone to sites and all?”

I nodded.

“Good for you”

She looked around.

“How’s Caleb?”

I smiled.

“Like I told Bobbi, he’s in England. He graduated in May, so there was nothing keeping him in Nashville anymore” I said.

She frowned.

“Yes there was…mind blowing sex!”

I shushed her and she laughed.

“What about you? How’s Brendan” I asked.

She smiled and looked up to see Bobbi and Mike making their way over.

“Mike caught me”

I gasped and she nodded.

“Yea, he didn’t tell Bobbi though. He knows she’ll freak”

“It’s been like 4 years, you’re allowed to see people” I told her.

She nodded.

“I know, but she thinks I’m this fragile person”

I nodded.

“I’m going to miss the sex though”

“What happened?” I asked.

She frowned.

“He’s doing field excavations”

I smiled.

“That’s good for him” I said.

She nodded.

“He’s going to be gone for about a year and a half. He’s doing research and he’s teaching in England for a bit”

I hummed and nodded. Brendan, the guy who she was a friend with benefits with was an Anthropologist.

“Maybe he will see Caleb there” I said.

She frowned and shrugged.

“Well we had our fun”

I laughed and nodded.

“Why are you ladies laughing?”

I smiled as Mike kissed my cheek and handed me my drink.

“You look beautiful as always”

I looked up at him.

“You look good, your hair is a little longer than usual” I said.

He smiled.

“Kinda”

“You look good, it suits you” I said.

He reached for my drink and took a sip of it. I was going to scold him since he shouldn’t be drinking alcohol since he had a concussion but Alex shook her head at me.

“Did Bobbi not get you a drink?”

He looked at Alex and pouted.

“No, what a bitch right. Can you get me a Corona?”

She nodded and stood up. Mike looked at me and smiled.

“You look dead tired”

I laughed.

“I am tired, school is kicking my butt” I told him.

“You’re almost done though”

I nodded

“I thought Texas was supposed to make you tan, not even more pale”

I turned around to see Angela making her way over. Angela laughed and looked at Mike.

“I’m always in my apartment studying, it was a brutal summer”

He stood up and hugged Angela.

“Your hair!”

He laughed and stretched his arm out to hug Rosa.

“Where’s your husband?”

Rosa kissed his cheek and pulled away.

“Open Bar”

Mike nodded and she laughed when he frowned.

“You’re almost there, I’ll get you a beer cause I heard”

He smiled and kissed her cheek. Mike had a sublte charm to him.

“You’re the best”

She hummed and walked away.

“How’s the Big D?”

Angela laughed.

“Please never call it that”

He smiled.

“That’s what it’s called”

She nodded.

“I’m just glad to have a short break”

He nodded.

“Same”

I nodded and took a sip of my drink.

“Let’s welcome the New Year trashed as fuck then”

She laughed and nodded.

“No concussion?”

He waved her off.

“I’m fine”

She looked at him and he smiled at her.

“I promise you I am fine, I just needed a different atmosphere”

She nodded.

“Dr. Resnick said I don’t have a concussion anymore”

He was a neuro surgeon, and he was actually being mentored by Mike’s dad when he got diagnose with a brain tumor. It was inoperable so he taught Dr. Resnick all he could before he passed away.

“Then you’re good. Let me hug you”

He let Angela hug him and rub his back. Mike always gets slightly babied by all of us. Katalina, Alex’s sister is also someone we’re super protective, and Dave who’s Mike’s bestfriend.

“Where’s Dave?” I asked.

“He spent Christmas with his dad this year and new years with his mom”

I nodded.

“Poor guy, you’d think that once he was 18 that would stop and his parents would be civil”

I nodded agreeing.

“I was here Christmas and I didn’t get to see him. I feel bad now” I said.

He laughed.

“I’ll tell him you said hi”

I nodded.

“He can call me when he needs help on his homework” I told him.

He nodded and sat down in between Angela and I.

“I’m starving…and I heard there were tacos”

“You heard right” I said.

He smiled.

“I love tacos, the tacos aren’t the same in San Jose. They’re not as authentic”

I laughed and nodded.

“Imagine how I feel in Nashville” I said.

He laughed

“The brew is good though right?”

I nodded.

“I might visit you when I turn 21”

I laughed and nodded.

“I might not be in Nashville by the time that happens” I told him.

“Ruining my plans”

I laughed.

“Well I hope you get a permanent job in Nashville, so I can go there”

“Pray for that to happen” I told him.

He chuckled.

“This is going to be a good year”

He bumped shoulders with me and I looked at Alex who nodded.

“No matter what you’re coming to San Jose to visit this summer right?”

I smiled.

“Of course” I said.

She nodded and smiled.

“We’re almost done with Grad school and then we have to be adults”

“Yay” I said making her laugh.

We stood up to go get our food and I looked around. I had no clue where I’d be next year and it was extremely terrifying. I mean I loved LA, but I was very happy in Nashville.
