Like I'm Gonna Lose You

Mattias’ POV- December 2015
“Does anyone else know?”
“That I bought a ring?” I asked.
Nick nodded at me as he opened the velvet box. He looked at the ring and nodded slowly. He let out a light chuckle and smiled at me.
“No one knows” I told him.
He nodded slowly.
“Good, if you told any of the girls they would have told her by now”
I nodded and took a sip of my water.
“When are you asking her?”
“During the All Star Break” I told him.
He smiled and nodded. The only reason he was agreeing to let Lucy live with me after September was because I told him I wanted to marry Lucy.
“This ring is perfect for her”
He looked at me and nodded slowly.
“Her dad would have loved you”
I smiled.
“You’re Swedish, and you treat her like a princess. My neice is in good hands”
He handed me back the box and I looked at the ring in front of me.
“How did you get her ring size?”
“I took a ring from her jewlery box” I said.
He chuckled.
“Smart guy, my wife doesn’t wear rings except her wedding rings. She’s a surgeon so it was hard getting her the right size”
I chuckled and put the box in my jacket.
“Where do your Swedes think you are?”
“Asleep” I told him.
He chuckled and nodded.
“What about you?” I asked him.
He took a sip of his coffee.
“I’m not staying at Angela’s apartment. Melissa and I decided to get a hotel room. She actually gets here in about an hour so I should head out soon”
I nodded and he signaled for the waiter. He had chosen the place where we would eat, and since we got here he told me that I was not allowed to pay the bill.
“How far is your hotel?”
“Down the street” I told him.
He nodded.
“I’ll drop you off, the rental is in front of the restaurant”
I nodded and he paid the bill. I followed him out and I fixed my jacket. His phone rung and he looked at the screen.
“I’ll ignore that”
I chuckled as he ignored his daughter’s phonecall.
“Will you be joining us for the New Years Eve Celebration?”
I nodded.
“Yea, I promised Lucy that win or lose I would be there” I told him.
He smiled.
“You two communicate real well”
I nodded and got into the car once he unlocked the car door.
“Why was Lucy in the storage room?”
I looked at him and he smiled.
“Someone saw her and a brown haired man. I will assume that was either Filip or Calle”
“Fil” I said.
He nodded.
“So?”
“She was looking for some photographs. The 1996 dig?” I said.
He hummed and nodded.
“Yea, that was the last time Lucy’s dad traveled to South Africa. You do know Lucy is named after a skeleton”
I nodded.
“She told me a couple of days ago” I told him.
He nodded and shook his head as he pulled into a parking spot in front of the hotel.
“Let me answer so she will stop calling me”
I nodded.
“I’ll see you tomorrow” I told him as I got out of the car.
He nodded and once I closed the door he answered the call with “Angela, I’m driving”. I walked inside the hotel and gave Filip and Calle a nod as I passed them on my way to the elevator.
“Where were you?”
“I was having breakfast” I told him as I got into the elevator.
I waved at him as the doors closed.
