A Daydream Away, or Maybe a Reality

1/1

Alex and Jack had been friends for years upon years. They had started a band together all the way back in middle or high school and now they were in their late 20s, still touring and making music. But, there was something that Alex had never told Jack. Somehow, along the way he had fallen for his childhood best friend. He thought about the possibility, or impossibility, of a relationship between the two.

They were on tour and he was sitting on the bus, daydreaming. His thoughts were trapped in thoughts of Jack and him together, a dream that he was sure would never become a reality. In his daydreams however, it was as real as Alex figured it would ever be. His mind slipped into a daydream as he thought.

It was after the show and Alex was relaxing on the couch after meeting some fans. He was contemplating playing video games or something when Jack sat down next to him. This quickly brought Alex’s attention out of his thoughts.

“Hey man, what’s up?” He asked his best friend.

“Not much. I’m just kinda bored.” Jack shrugged. He seemed to be acting different than usual, but Alex couldn’t put his finger on quite how or why.

“I was just thinking of playing some video games.” Alex shrugged as well. He wanted to know what was on his friend’s mind, but he knew Jack would tell him if he really wanted to. It was best not to push him.

“Oh, cool. Let’s play something together then.” Alex agreed and the two set up their X-box and began playing games and joking around. Jack was finally starting to act like his normal self again which Alex was happy to see.

“Hey, can I ask you something?” Alex knew he shouldn’t be trying to force information out of Jack. But, he couldn’t help but be worried about why Jack was acting so different than usual.

“Yeah, go ahead dude. What’s up?” Jack looked at Alex for a moment before his eyes traveled back to the game they were playing.

“Are you okay? You were acting a little weird before.” Alex eyed Jack instead of paying attention to the game.

“Uh, yeah, I’m fine. It’s just that I was thinking about something. Don’t worry about it.” Jack faltered as he spoke and Alex knew he wanted to talk about it.

“You know you can tell me anything, Jack. We’re best friends.” Alex patted Jack shoulder lightly as a sign of comfort before glancing back to the game for a second before looking back to his friend again.

“Yeah, I know man.” Jack nodded, more subdued than he usually was. He almost missed Jack mumbling under his breath, “That’s the problem.”

“Seriously dude. What’s up?” Alex put his controller down to show how serious he was about the conversation.

“It’s weird, man. Don’t worry about.” Jack brushed him off and looked back at the TV screen. But, after a brief moment, he glanced back at Alex. “I just think I’m kinda gay for you or something. I don’t know.”

“Wait, really?” Alex tried to keep his voice down. He had been waiting to hear those words for so long.

“It’s weird, I know. Just forget about it, okay?” Jack was sheepish, something Alex rarely saw.

“Nah, it just that… I’ve been kinda gay for you for a while.” Alex couldn’t help the smile on his face, but he had to force out the words. He was half afraid that Jack was just messing with him, but half excited if Jack was telling the truth.

“Are you pulling a joke? I know we play this shit up for the cameras and fans, but I never thought you’d be seriously into me.” Jack was taken aback, much like Alex had been.

“No man. I’m totally serious.” Alex’s lips had spread into a wide smile and Jack’s did that same after his mind processed what was happening.

~~~
“Hey Alex, dude!” Someone’s voice snapped Alex out of is daydream and it took him a second to regain his bearings.
“Huh? What is it?” He looked up at Jack in confusion, trying not to think of the daydream he had just had.
“We should totally play video games or something, man.” Jack was smiling like always and plopped down on the couch next to Alex.
“Yeah, sure.” Alex struggled to pay attention to the game as he remembered his daydream vividly. The daydreams were happening more and more recently and they kept becoming more vivid. And again, his mind brought him another vivid daydream.
The two of them were sitting together on the couch, Rian and Zack were elsewhere. It had been a while since to two had admitted their feelings to each other. While they had decided to become romantically involved, they were hiding it from both their fans and bandmates just until the two got their bearings in their relationship. Alex was resting his head on Jack’s shoulder as they watched a movie.
“Hey Jack…”Alex’s voice was quiet as he looked up at his best friend.
“What is it?” Jack glanced down at Alex with a look of adoration.
“When the tour is over, we should get a dog together.” Alex was sure his idea sounded stupid, but he couldn’t help it. A dog would give him an excuse to see Jack.
“Why wait until the tour ends? Let’s go looking for dogs whenever we get time.” Jack gave Alex a goofy smiled.
“Are you serious?” Alex couldn’t hide his surprise.
“Of course.” Jack’s grin only grew slightly wider before he leaned down to kiss Alex tenderly on the lips.
Alex was brought back to reality quickly by the feeling of someone shaking his shoulder. It was Jack. Alex couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face.
“Hey, what’s up?” He was tired. The daydreams were taking over his life and it was getting harder to separate his daydreams from his reality. He had a sneaking suspicion that he was going to do something he was going to regret.
“We have some free time in Boston. Do you want to go do something?” Jack looked excited and Alex started to sit up from where he had slumped down on the couch.
“Yeah sure. We can look at dogs.” He immediately knew his mind had unintentionally crossed from reality and back to daydreams. He panicked internally, but he had no idea how to remedy the situation.
“I mean, yeah, if you want to look at dogs.” Jack gave him a weird look, but Alex just tried to laugh it off.
The two ended up going out and having a good time around the city on that Tuesday afternoon. The two of them alone together, just hanging out. Alex was having a hard time because his mind kept mixing reality with his daydreams. But, he was sure that he could never act on his feeling, so he just blubbered through, something unusual for him and Jack was taking notice.
“Hey, Alex. What’s up with you? Are you okay? You’ve been acting kinda weird all day.” Jack pulled Alex to a secluded corner on their way back to the bus, concern obvious on his face.
“Yeah, man. I’m fine. I’m just a little tired, that’s all.” Alex shrugged it off, not able to look Jack in the eyes.
“Bullshit, dude. You are definitely not fine.” Jack grabbed Alex by the shoulders and shook him lightly. “Come on. Tell me what’s going on. I’m really worried about you.”
“I’m serious. I’m just tired.” Alex didn’t want to lie to Jack, but how could he tell his best friend that he had fallen for him?
“Is this about your daydreams? I’ve noticed.” Jack was eyeing Alex with a serious look.
“How do you know about them?” A look of panic covered Alex’s face and Jack couldn’t help but let out a small laugh.
“You’ve been mumbling to yourself when you’re completely out of it. I kind of figured you were daydreaming. But, about me?” Jack raised his eyebrows and gave Alex a smirk.
“And so what if you were you in my daydreams?” Alex looked back at Jack with a small smirk of his own.
“Well, I’m glad it’s me and not some girl.” Jack was inching closer to Alex and both noticed the closeness.
“Are you trying to imply something, Jack?” Alex was trying to keep up the cocky façade, but he could feel it breaking in his nervous state.
“I’m trying to say that I deserve you more than some girl.” Before Alex could respond their lips were connected and Alex wrapped his arms around Jack’s shoulders. The two just stood there kissing for a moment before Alex pulled away for air. He looked at Jack with a questioning look and a raised eyebrow, but Jack’s only response was to pull him into another kiss.
