For Your Eyes Only

If I Could Fly

"What made you stop drinking?"

"I don't think I ever got over the need to drink. I just replaced one addiction with another." I stared out the window, my mood matching the weather. It was freezing and pouring rain, the sky a dark grey.

"You think he's an addiction?"

"Well, it's obvious, isn't it? He shows up, and the drinking stops."

"I don't think that makes him an addiction. I think he's healthy for you."

"You're mistaken. He definitely makes me want to drink. He gives me the worst headaches I've ever experienced, but I know drinking will disappoint him, and that's the last thing I want." The thought of intentionally upsetting him made me sick to my stomach, and the fact that I felt so strongly about him made it that much worse.

"Why is he so important to you?"

"He's the only one that didn't give up on me."
