You Loved Me Once

111: How Could I Not Be?

“Are you sure that you don’t mind taking her, madre?” Lionel posed softly as he shifted Isabella on his hip, trying to calm her down a little. It was getting late and with Alba getting noticeably more tired, the party had started to wind down, something which was a small relief to the argentine who wanted nothing more than to help his wife relax for a little while, something he doubted she had done since she had woken up that morning.

“Not at all” Celia mused, gently smoothing out the toddler’s dark hair.

“She’s a little fussy” Lionel noted.

“She’s just tired” Celia mused “I am sure once we get her home and to sleep, she’ll be fine. You ought to go and find Alba. The last time I saw her, she was barely awake” she enthused.

“I should” Lionel nodded “Gracias for all your help today, mama. You, along with the others, did a wonderful job for me and Alba and I think I speak for us both when I say that we’re very grateful for the help” he enthused with a soft smile.

Celia grinned back at him gently and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Congratulations, Leo” she mused before she wandered away towards her husband, affording Lionel the chance to pad towards Alba who was stood talking to a few of the guests who were slower to leave.

Watching her for a moment, he allowed his dark eyes to admire her before he stepped towards her, his arms contently settling around her waist. “Are you ready to get out of here?” he mumbled, pressing a small kiss to her shoulder.

Alba startled a little at the sudden embrace, but relaxed into it quickly, leading back against him. “You have no idea how ready I am to get out of here” she mumbled “I need to get these shoes off of my feet and quickly” she added.

Lionel smiled against her shoulder. “I think we can arrange that” he mused.

Alba smiled a little at the idea of getting her shoes off of her feet before she bid goodnight to the people she had been talking to, her hand happily taking Lionel’s. “You have the keycard?” she posed.

“I do” Lionel confirmed “Did Eva leave your overnight bag?” he posed.

“She did” Alba confirmed.

“Then we should get out of here” Lionel enthused, pulling her hand to his lips.

Alba shook her head. “You’re being so affectionate” she quipped, a soft hint of pink on her cheeks.

“It is kind of our wedding day” Lionel countered, chuckling softly “You’d think if there was one day that I was entitled to be a little more affectionate, it would be today” he enthused.

“Fair point” Alba teased.

Lionel rolled his eyes a little before he guided her towards the elevator, his arms wrapping around her waist once more.

“Please, remind me to never wear heels again” Alba complained as she moved to sit on the end of the bed, letting out a small sigh of relief as she tossed her shoes onto the floor.

“I am sure you’ve said that before” Lionel commented, moving to stow the shoes beside their bags “And yet still, you wear them” he pointed out.

Alba offered him a slightly sarcastic glare before she rested back against the mattress, happily stretching her arms above her head.

“How are you feeling?” Lionel posed as he moved to pull off his jacket.

“About what?” Alba teased.

“Oh, I don’t know” Lionel played along as he moved to sit beside her “How about how are you feeling now that you’re carrying our second little bump?” he posed, his hand gently resting on her stomach. It was on his mind, after Alba had told him about her pregnancy the night before, they’d barely had a second to speak about it, but he wanted to. He wanted her to know that he was more than happy about the news that they were going to have a second baby.

Alba smiled, her fingertips gently pushing through his dark hair. “It’s a little soon” she murmured “Isabella’s not going to be one for a few months yet, but I was excited when I found out. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner” she added.

“How long’ve you known?” he posed, his fingers tracing gentle shapes across her stomach.

“I had an inkling a couple of weeks ago” Alba confessed gently “I was starting to get tired more easily and my boobs looked bigger to me, but I just put it down to nerves. It wasn’t until I threw up a few days ago that I really thought about it” she admitted softly.

“And everything is OK?” he posed, peeking up at her curiously.

Alba nodded her head. “The midwife I went to see said that everything was progressing as it should be” she enthused “She’s sent a copy of my notes back to Cassandra in Barcelona and once we get back from our honeymoon, I am supposed to go and see her” she added.

Lionel nodded his head quietly before he turned onto his side, his other hand gently brushing some of the blonde hair that had fallen out of place away from her face. “You’ve looked so beautiful all day” he murmured “But right now, it’s something else” he added, carefully kissing her forehead.

Alba smiled gently. “You’re very sweet” she noted, her fingers messing with the tie he still wore.

Lionel smiled. “You’re happy with how today went, aren’t you?” he posed.

“How could I not be?” Alba posed “Everyone I cared about was here, no one got into a fight, and everything went off without a hitch. But the best part had to be the moment you kissed me and we walked away as husband and wife” she grinned.

Lionel smiled gently before he leant forwards, pressing a careful kiss to her lips.

Alba smiled at the contact and moved her hand, resting it contently against his cheek. “Are you going to tell me where we’re going on honeymoon yet?” she posed as she sat up a little, carefully loosening the tie from around his neck.

Lionel grinned and shook his head. “You’ll just have to wait and see” he teased.

Alba rolled her eyes and prepared to quip something back, but Lionel was quicker, pressing a soft kiss against her lips which stole the words from the tip of her tongue.
