Give Me Your Heart

28: Neither Can I

Stretching her legs out a little, Riley rested her back against the wall, her blue eyes surveying the small room she sat in. It had been a little while, after their lunch with Lionel and Antonella, almost 2 weeks had past, and despite her original hesitation, Riley was pleased with how things were. She knew that it was going to take a little adaptation, even without mentioning her parents, she and Gerard were due to have a baby in only a couple of months, but she was pleased with how things were going and, for a little while, she merely wanted to enjoy the early stages of their relationship before their son put in his first appearance.

Sparing a small yawn into her hand, she shifted a little before she pushed herself to her feet, her blue eyes watching as the door to the nursery swung open, allowing Gerard, who still looked half asleep, to step inside, a sight which made Riley smile a little. It was early, thanks to a bout of cramp, she had woken up before her alarm, and she was a little amused to see Gerard up so early, something he’d always tended to shy away from. “You know it’s only 7:30, don’t you?” she teased as she wrapped her sweater around her a little more.

Gerard, who was staring sleepily around the room, nodded. “I do” he noted “But someone left their alarm on when they got out of bed and it woke me up. What are you doing in here?” he posed, a small yawn falling out of his mouth. It was rare, since he had first shown her the nursery, Riley had tended to stay away from it, and he was a little surprised to find her in it, especially without him.

Riley shrugged a little. “I couldn’t get back to sleep” she noted softly “And I know you’ve been working on this for a little while and I thought I would check it out. Is that an issue?” she posed, lifting an eyebrow.

“Not at all” Gerard noted as he stepped towards her “In fact, I’ve been meaning to show it to you” he added as he wrapped his arms around her.

Riley smiled a little at the feel of his arms around her waist and rested her head back, leaning it against his shoulder. “You’ve done a better job than I expected you would” she mused with an impish smile.

Gerard rolled his eyes playfully before he pressed a kiss to the top of her head, allowing a small comfortable silence to fall over them. It still felt a little strange, even with Riley approaching 7 months pregnant, the idea that they were expecting a baby was still a little overawing for them, but Gerard was confident, even if they were still getting things in order, he was confident that they would handle the little boy’s arrival when it came along.

“You should come downstairs” he mumbled softly “You’ve got a little time before you need to get ready for work and we could have breakfast” he offered, pressing a kiss against her shoulder.

“That does sound nice” Riley mumbled, smiling up at him.

Gerard offered her a soft smile before he unwound his arms from her waist, moving to take her hand before he led her out of the room.

“Have you given any thought to a name for bump?”

Riley, who was sipping on her mug of tea, lifted her head, her blue eyes peeking towards Gerard who stood on the other side of the counter, serving up the food he’d cooked. It had been quiet, after making their way downstairs, the couple had set about preparing breakfast in a comfortable silence, and the sound of Gerard’s voice, as well as the content of his question had caught Riley a little off guard. “Huh?” she spluttered.

Gerard, who’d moved to set a plate ahead of her, smiled. “Our son, Riley” he teased softly “When he comes along, he’s going to need a name. We can’t just call him bump forever” he added, popping a piece of food into his mouth.

Riley offered him a look before she shook her head, sipping on her drink. “I’ve not come up with a name I like yet” she quipped “What about you?” she added.

Gerard offered her a grin before he ducked out of the room, returning seconds later with a scrap of paper in his hands.

“What is that?” Riley posed, her head tilted a little.

“It’s a list of names” Gerard quipped as he placed it on the counter “About 2 days after you told me that you were expecting, I started to write down names that I liked and this is the latest version that I put together after we found out that he was a boy. It’s a list of the boys’ names that I liked best” he enthused with a grin.

Riley eyed the piece of paper for a moment before she shook her head, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. “You’re adorable, you know that?” she quipped as she pushed herself to her feet, her arms gently wrapping her around his neck.

Gerard shrugged. “I just wanted to make sure that we had some sort of idea. For the last few weeks, the focus has very much been on me and you and getting our relationship right, but I think now is the right time to focus on him” he enthused, his hand gently brushing over her bump. It had been a few weeks, since agreeing to give their relationship another go, the two of them had been focused on their relationship, but with it looking settled, he wanted to switch their focus towards the little boy who was only a couple of months away from being born.

Riley mulled his words over for a second before she nodded her head. “I think you’re probably right” she agreed softly “We’ve only got what, 12 weeks before he’s due?” she posed softly.

“12 weeks and 3 days” Gerard corrected with an impish smile.

Riley rolled her eyes a little before she pressed a soft kiss against his cheek, something which made him smile a little before he dropped his hand, resting it against Riley’s bump. “I can’t wait to meet him” he mumbled softly, his thumb gently brushing against her stomach.

Riley watched his thumb for a second before she pressed another kiss against his cheek, a warm smile on her face. “Neither can I” she agreed gently.
