Give Me Your Heart
41: I Like You Being Here
Wrinkling her nose a little, Riley blinked her eyes open, sparing a look towards the alarm clock which sat on the end table. She knew that it was early, from the level of light which was seeping into the bedroom, she was confident that it was around 3 or 4 in the morning, but with the sound of Alexander’s whimpers filling the air, she knew that she had little choice but to get out of bed.
It had become routine, with the little boy approaching a week old, both Riley and Gerard had done their fair share of night feeds, and whilst it left them feeling a little tired, neither one of them minded, both of them merely enjoyed seeing the little boy.
Sparing a small yawn into her hand, Riley spared a small look towards Gerard who was still asleep before she pushed herself to her feet, collecting her dressing gown before she padded out of the room towards the nursery. Carefully, she pushed the door open before she padded inside, smiling a little at the sight of the infant who laid in his crib, whimpering gently.
“Hola, little one” she murmured as she stepped towards the crib, carefully lifting Alexander up. The little boy stirred for a moment before he settled down, something which made Riley smile a little. It was still a little unfamiliar, even despite a week having passed since Alexander, Riley still hadn’t fully wrapped her head around the idea that she and Gerard were parents, but it was something she was getting used to, even if it was still a little strange, she had little doubt that it was something she would grow into.
Collecting a blanket, Riley carefully wrapped it around Alexander before she padded towards the chair which sat in the corner of the room, rocking him softly. “You’re a fussy little one” she murmured softly “It was only a couple of hours ago that your papa was in here” she added.
“It was 4, actually”
Riley, who had been contently mumbling to Alexander, lifted her head slightly, offering a look towards Gerard who stood in the door way, a soft smile on his face. “You were asleep” she noted gently.
“I was” Gerard confirmed “But I could hear you moving around through the monitor and I woke up” he explained.
“You didn’t have to get up” Riley noted “Me and Alex, we’ve got this” she added.
“I don’t doubt that” Gerard quipped with a smile “But I like seeing the two of you together. You’re both very cute” he teased as he padded a little deeper into the room, taking a seat on the floor beside the chair Riley sat in.
Riley rolled her eyes a little before Alexander let out a small sound, pulling her attention back to him.
Gerard watched her for a second before he rested his head back, closing his eyes, something which made Riley scoff. “Why don’t you go back to bed?” she quipped, poking the side of his head gently.
Gerard startled a little at the feeling of the poke before he shook his head. “I’ll go when you go” he noted.
Riley shook her head a little before she flicked her attention back to Alexander, watching as he blinked his blue eyes sleepily. Smiling, she pressed a little kiss to the top of his head before she pushed herself to her feet, gently placing him back into his crib. “Dulces sueños, little one” she murmured before she turned on her heel, offering her hand out to Gerard who looked up at her, a sleepy expression on his face. “Come on” she noted.
Gerard offered her an impish smile before he placed his hand into hers, allowing her to pull him to his feet before she led him back towards the bedroom. Dropping his hand, she carefully removed her dressing gown before she moved to climb back into the bed, a sight which made Gerard smile a little. It wasn’t something they’d talked about, with Alexander having all of their focus, the topic of their living arrangement had been pushed to the back of their minds, but the longer Riley stayed, the more Gerard wanted to make it a permanent arrangement.
He knew that Riley wanted to take her time, after the way their previous relationship had ended, he didn’t blame her for being a little cautious, but he was confident in them, even if she wasn’t, and a part of him wanted to encourage her to take a step forwards, even if it was a little soon, he wanted to make things clear before he got too used to having both Riley and Alexander around all of the time.
“You’re staring”
Gerard, who’d been a little lost in his thoughts, startled a little at the sound of Riley’s voice, something which made her shake her head, an amused grin on her face. “You really should get some sleep” she teased.
Gerard rolled his eyes before he padded a little deeper into the room, slipping into the spot beside her. “I was thinking” he noted softly.
“You were?” Riley quipped with a teasing smile.
Gerard offered her a pointed look before he shook his head, his blue eyes peeking up towards the ceiling. “I don’t want to fight” he mumbled softly.
Riley frowned. “Gerard?” she posed.
“I don’t want you to think I am pressuring you, OK?” he noted gently “And I know that this is very soon to having this conversation. I mean, only a week ago, you gave birth to our son and I don’t want you to think I am trying to ruin things when they’re going to so well. That’s not my intention, Ry” he babbled softly.
Riley, who’d turned onto her side, chewed on her lip for a second before she reached out, gently placing her hand on his face. “Gerard, you’re rambling” she quipped as she turned his face so that he looked at her “What are you talking about?” she added.
Gerard studied her expression for a moment before he sighed. “I love having you and Alex here” he murmured softly “And I am worried that, in a few weeks or months, you’re going to find somewhere else to stay” he added gently.
Riley blinked. “What?” she squeaked.
“I like the two of you being here, Ry” Gerard murmured softly “And I don’t want you to go” he added.
Riley studied the expression on his face for a moment before she closed her eyes, not quite sure what to say to him. She knew that the topic had to come up, eventually, she and Gerard had had to have a conversation about where she, and Alexander, would live, but she had hoped to put it off for a little while. The last thing she wanted was for a problem to arise in her relationship with Gerard so soon after their baby had arrived.
