Give Me Your Heart

57: I Like That You Miss Me

Wrinkling his nose a little, Gerard tossed onto his side, his ears doused by the sound of his alarm which emanated away from the end table. It was early, after a couple of weeks off from training, he had grown rather used to laying in, but with the team due to travel to London ahead of a training camp, he had little choice but to get up, even if he was particularly comfortable, he knew that he couldn’t miss the flight. Blinking a little, he carefully stretched his legs for a second before he leant out of the bed, switching off the alarm.

“You couldn’t have gotten it sooner?”

Gerard, who’d been checking the screen of his phone, startled a little at the sound of Riley’s voice before he turned over, admiring the soft smile she wore in her face. It had taken a little work, after the conversation that they had had in France, both Riley and Gerard had agreed to take things at a more tentative pace for a while, but after a couple of weeks, things had returned to normal, something which pleased the defender, even if it meant taking things a little slower than he would have wanted, he was merely glad that they had managed to put things back together.

He knew that it was sticking point, as far as he was concerned, there was no need to hold off on making another step forwards, but he knew that he had to be tentative, even if he was hoping to start taking step forwards, the last thing he wanted to was start another fight with Riley. Things were good for them, even if they were being a little more hesitant about moving their relationship forwards, and Gerard doubted that they had it in them to fix things if they broke again. They’d already had to do it twice and he didn’t want to risk a third time.

“I could have done” he quipped softly “But then I would have missed that cute smile of yours” he teased, his fingertip gently brushing over the corner of her mouth.

Riley’s cheeks warmed a little before she shook her head, peeking down at the time on the phone which sat in his other hand. “It’s barely 7:30” she murmured softly “You really have to go so soon?” she added.

“I have a little time” Gerard noted, his fingertips gently brushing a few loose hairs out of her face “But I do have some packing to do. I do, however, have some spare time for breakfast with you and Alex before I go” he enthused softly.

Riley, who was watching his hand, shook her head a little before she leant up, pressing a soft kiss against his palm. “I’m going to miss you” she murmured softly. She knew that it was a little silly, during the time that they had dated, Gerard had often spent time away from her, but still it unsettled her a little. As silly as it was, she had grown used to having him around and she missed him when he wasn’t.

Gerard smiled a little before he ducked down, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead. “I am going to miss you too” he enthused softly “But it will be fine. We will speak on the phone and we’ll video chat when we can. It’s only a few days, Ry” he teased gently, a boyish grin on his face. He knew that she didn’t like it, as much as she liked to deny that they were in serious relationship, Riley tended to be one who called first, and he wanted to reassure her that things would be fine, even if he didn’t doubt it, he knew that Riley needed to hear it.

Riley offered him a slightly dubious look, something which made Gerard press a kiss against her lips, a small smile playing on his face. “I like that you miss me” he teased as he pulled back a little, resting his forehead on hers “It means that you kind of like having me around” he grinned as he shifted his hands, tickling her sides a little.

Riley squirmed, trying to get away from his hands, before she let out a small giggle, something which made the smile on his face widen a little. It had taken a little work, after their conversation, a small part of Gerard had been concerned that things between them would peter out, but he was pleased that they hadn’t, even if there were a few awkward moments between the two of them, he was pleased that they hadn’t let go of a relationship that he enjoyed being a part of.

“Have you got everything?”

Gerard, who had been pulling the zip on his suitcase around, looked up at the sound of Riley’s voice, his blue eyes landing on her frame which stood in the door way, Alexander settled in her arms. It had been a pleasant morning, after they’d woken up, both Gerard and Riley had been keen to make the most of the time they had before he departed, and Gerard had to admit that he was pleased that he was pleased by the results. It had been the first comfortable morning that they had had in a little while and he was pleased by it. He hoped that it was a sign that things between the two of them were getting back to normal after the hiccup which had occurred a few weeks previous.

“I think so” he quipped softly “But even if I don’t, I am not opening that suitcase again” he added with a grin.

“You are pretty terrible at packing” Riley teased.

Gerard offered her a slightly sarcastic smile before he moved towards her, carefully collecting Alexander from her arms. “Have you spoken to your madre?” he posed. It was a common a thing, with Audrey and Luis still not entirely keen on the idea of Riley and Gerard’s relationship, they tended to avoid visiting whilst he was around, but he had little doubt that they would be in contact. As much as they didn’t like him, they did enjoy spending time with Riley and Alexander and Gerard was sure that they would want to make the most of him not being around.

“She called a little while ago” Riley noted “She says that she and my papa would love to see us, but I’ve yet to arrange anything” she added.

Gerard, who’d been cooing softly to Alexander, lifted his head a little, offering her a small smile. “I am sure you’ll come up with something” he noted “And even if you don’t, I am sure they’ll be around” he added with a teasing smile.

Riley rolled her eyes a little at the idea before the sound of Gerard’s alarm reached them, causing him to sigh a little. “I have to get going” he noted softly.

Riley nodded and stepped towards him, carefully moving to take Alexander out of his arms. “You’ll call me when you get there?” she posed.

“Always” Gerard grinned.

Riley shook her head before she wrapped her spare arm around his neck, hugging him softly before she stepped back.

Gerard quirked another grin before he pressed a kiss to both Riley and Alexander’s heads. “I will see the two of you soon” he quipped as he moved to pick up his bag.

Riley nodded. “Adios, Gerard” she noted with a small smile.

Gerard offered her a soft look before he pressed a kiss to her lips. He knew that it was a little silly, he was only going to be away for a few days, but he liked the idea that Riley missed him when he wasn’t around. The idea that she missed him reaffirmed the idea that they were onto something good and it reassured him that they had done the right thing in fixing it.
