Lay Me Down

yer fall

It was sometime in the frame of after midnight, yet before dawn, when Dr. Davis slipped into Captain America’s tent.

She watched his chest rise and fall with each breath he took. She couldn’t help but think of the fact that Bucky would never do anything as simple and easy as taking a breath ever again.

Shaking her head, she walked over to Steve, crouching next to him. He had been one of her first true friends, one of the few people she trusted, one of the few people she would go to the ends of the earth for. And she knew that he would carry the guilt of what had happened to his best friend with him for the rest of his life.

Katherine pressed her lips to her friend’s forehead. “Good luck, Captain,” she said. “Do some good in this world.” She turned away from the sleeping man, lifting the flap of his tent and leaving.

The night sky was so blue, it was almost black. Stars twinkled overhead, and Katherine was reminded of the night that Bucky held her to him as they danced in the street. She remembered laying her head against his chest, pretending his heartbeat was the tempo they were dancing to. She remembered knowing in that moment that she was a goner for James Buchanan Barnes. The camp was quiet, save from the slow rumbling of a jeep. A few of the man were loading cases into the back, with a familiar face overseeing the packing.

“Stark.”

Howard turned to see the woman whom he considered his friend walking over to him. “Kitty Kat,” he said, with a grin. “I didn’t think I’d see you before we left.”

“I want to volunteer,” she said, getting straight to the point. She had known the moment that Steve had left her office yesterday evening that she was going to do this. Stark’s grin fell from his face, his eyes widening slightly.

“Kat, I appreciate this, but I really don’t think you’ve thought this through.”

“Do you want a subject for your experiment, or not, Stark?” Howard sighed.

“You’re acting irrationally, Kat,” he tried again to speak reason to the doctor. “It’s only been a day since Steve returned-”

“And Bucky didn’t.”

Stark opened his mouth, before closing it again.

“Howard.”

His features softened at the pitiful sound of his friend’s voice.

“Please.”

Despite his teasing and constant flirting with Katherine, Howard regarded her as one of his closest friends. Regardless of what he asked of her - all the readings, all the research, all the failed hypotheses - she had never asked for anything in return. And now here she was, standing in front of him, broken and lost, asking him for the one thing he had never wanted for her.

“Kat,” he began, already knowing that his resolve was failing, “it’s not going to be easy. You know what all this entails.”

She nodded. “Who better to be a subject than someone who knows what to expect?”

Howard sighed, rubbing his hand over his face. He closed his eyes for a moment, already regretting the words about to come out of his mouth. “Is Rogers going to come looking for me?”

Katherine smiled softly at her friend, but he noticed that it did not reach her eyes. “You won’t have to worry about Steve. He’ll understand.”

Nodding in finality, Howard offered his hand to Dr. Davis, guiding her to the passenger seat of the jeep. “You sure about this, Kat?” He gave her a final chance to change her mind, to go back to her tent.

“I’ve never been more certain.” She took his hand, using him as leverage to pull herself into the vehicle. Her fingers toyed with the chain around her neck as she promised, “I’m ready for this, Howard.”
