We Could Be Something

12: What Can I Do To Help?

Resting back into her seat slightly, Adriana spared a nervous sigh, her eyes bouncing around the familiar waiting room whilst knots twisted slightly in her stomach. She had thought that she would be used to it, since she had first found out that she was expecting, she had visited her midwife frequently, but still sitting in the waiting room unsettled her, even if she tried to focus on anything else. It was still painful to think that she was there without the father of her baby.

Swallowing slightly, she spared a look towards the other women who filled the room before she shook her head, moving to collect her phone from her bag. She knew that it was futile, since he had left, Jonathan hadn’t responded to a single call she’d made or text she had sent to him, but still she wanted to try, even if it was likely to be ignored. She wanted to at least be able to say that she had given him every opportunity to change his mind.

Sparing the phone a small glance, she dialed his familiar number and pressed the phone to her ear, listening as it flicked over to his voicemail. “Hey, Jon” she breathed gently “I know you’re still not in the habit of answering my calls or responding to my messages, but I thought I would leave one anyway. I’m due for my 20 week scan this morning and I thought…I thought maybe you’d want to know. I know it’s not likely, but I thought I should tell you anyway. I’d love it if you got back to me at some point, Jon. I think we need to talk some time” she mumbled before she carefully stowed her phone back into her bag.

She knew that he wasn’t going to call, since they’d broken up, she’d not heard anything from him, but still she wanted to try, even if she knew that there was no hope of him changing his mind all of a sudden, she wanted to at least give him the chance to.

“Adriana?”

Adriana, who’d been staring at her hands in her lap, lifted her head a little at the sound of her name before she quirked a small smile. “Isla” she noted gently “It’s good to see you” she added.

The midwife offered her a warm grin before she jutted a thumb over her shoulder. “Do you want to come through?” she posed.

Adriana nodded her head slightly before she pushed herself to her feet, following the midwife back towards her cubicle. “I’ve read over your latest set of checks, Adriana” Isla mused as she moved to offer the blonde woman a spot on the examination bed.

“Is everything OK?” Adriana posed.

“I’m very happy” Isla noted “Your blood pressure is still very settled, which we’re pleased about, and everything else seems to be in good order. You’re progressing very nicely” she enthused softly.

Adriana offered her a small smile before she moved to shuffle the bottom of her sweater up, allowing Isla to smear the cool gel over her skin. “Have you given any thought as to whether or not you want to know the sex of the baby?” the midwife posed as she moved the wand over Adriana’s bump.

Adriana, who was watching the screen, shook her head. “I’d like to keep it a surprise” she noted gently. It had taken a lot of thought, whether she wanted to know the sex of the baby or not, but she had opted against knowing, wanting to enjoy the surprise when the day she gave birth came along.

Isla offered her a warm smile before the soft thumping of the baby’s heartbeat filled the air, something which made Adriana smile softly. It had taken a lot of getting used to, the idea that she was pregnant had been one that had caught her more than a little off guard, and whilst it had spelt the end of her relationship with Jonathan, she knew that she wouldn’t have changed it, even if she did miss him. She was more than excited at the prospect of welcoming her baby into the world.

“You’re late”

Adriana, who’d just padded into the small café, shook her head a little at the sound of Iker’s voice, a small smile playing at the corner of her mouth. It had become routine, at least once a week, she and Iker agreed to head out to lunch together, and whilst she was wary of getting too attached to him, she had to admit that she enjoyed it. It had taken a little while, after she had revealed her pregnancy to him, things between them had become slightly awkward for a small while, but she was glad that they’d stuck it out, even if their relationship was simply platonic. She was glad to still have him around.

“My midwife is a talkative woman” Adriana quipped, pulling her seat out “My appointment overran slightly. Did you have somewhere better to be?” she added, offering him a teasing smile.

Iker feigned thought for a moment, something which made Adriana roll her eyes. “I can go if you want me too” she quipped playfully.

“You can stay” Iker quipped.

Adriana shook her head. “You’re an idiot, aren’t you?” she teased, playfully kicking his leg.

Iker offered her a small amused smile before he rested back in his seat. “How was the appointment?” he posed gently. He didn’t want to pry, Adriana’s pregnancy had very little to do with him, but he wanted to ensure that things were Ok. He wanted to ensure that she was doing as well as she could be.

Adriana, who’d moved to pour herself a glass of water, smiled. “You really want to know?” she posed.

“I do” Iker confirmed “But if you don’t want to tell me, it’s fine. It’s entirely your business and none of mine” he babbled.

Adriana admired the soft expression on his face before she shook her head. “You can ask, you know” she quipped “It’s nice to have someone taking an interest” she added, offering him a soft smile.

Iker nodded. “Is everything alright?” he posed gently, his dark eyes glancing down towards her bump.

“Isla is very happy” Adriana noted, settling her hand on the bump she carried “All of the little checks they do on me appear positive and the baby…they’ve got a wonderful heartbeat” she enthused, a soft grin playing at the corner of her mouth.

“Did you find out whether it is a boy or girl?” Iker posed.

Adriana shook her head. “I didn’t want to know” she noted “I’ve always liked the idea of finding out when they’re born” she enthused.

Iker offered her a soft smile before he reached out, taking her hand in his. “Did you call him?” he posed gently. He knew that it was still a sore topic, the expression that Adriana wore whenever her ex arose in conversation confided it, but Iker still wanted to ask, even if he knew the answer. He wanted to encourage her to talk about it, something which he was sure would help her to feel better in the long run.

Adriana offered him a soft look before she nodded. “I got his voicemail again” she mumbled, her face twitching a little with an emotion that Iker couldn’t quite place.

Iker squeezed her hand softly, trying to offer her a little comfort, before he quirked a warm smile. “If you need anything, you know that you can ask me right?” he posed softly.

“Iker…”

“I am not suggesting that you involve me in the big things, this baby is entirely your business, Addie, and I’d hate to intrude, but if you need help with things like painting a nursery or moving furniture around, I’d be happy to help. You just have to ask” he interjected gently, his hand still squeezing hers lightly.

Adriana spared a glance down towards their hands before she looked up at him. “Really?” she posed.

Iker nodded. “All you have to do is ask, Addie” he noted.

Adriana shook her head before she quirked a small smile, something which made Iker squeeze her hand once more. He didn’t want to intrude, regardless of their friendship, Adriana’s pregnancy was something which was between her and Jonathan, but he wanted to offer her a little support, something she appeared to be in need of.
