We Could Be Something

122: I Need Him Here

“I did give you the number for the hotel and one of the coaches, didn’t I?” Iker posed as he drew the zip around on his suitcase, his dark eyes peeking towards Adriana who sat on the bed beside him, flicking through a magazine.

It had been a little while, after they’d welcome in the new year, a couple of months had passed, and with Adriana’s due date approaching quickly, Iker wanted to ensure that she had a means of contacting him, even if they were still a couple of weeks away from the due date, the last thing he wanted was to miss the moment that their son or daughter entered the word.

Adriana, who’d been reading her magazine, quirked a small smile at the sound of his words before she lifted her head, nodding. “You did” she confirmed “You actually put the numbers in there yourself” she added, her finger poking his side playfully.

Iker rolled his eyes a little before he carefully moved to settle on the bed beside her, his hand slipping beneath the material of the shirt she wore. “I know that you think I am fussing” he mumbled softly “But I just want you to be able to get a hold of me if they do decide to make an appearance whilst I am gone” he added, his thumb gently tracing small circles against her bump.

He knew that the chances were slim, the baby still wasn’t due for a couple of weeks, but Iker wanted to ensure that Adriana could get a hold of him, even if it did mean leaving the match early. The last thing he wanted to do was miss the birth.

Adriana admired the small movement of his thumb for a couple of seconds before she carefully sat up, pressing a soft kiss against his cheek. “I know you do” she mused softly “And, if this is the day that they choose to arrive, then you’ll be my first call, I promise” she added, offering him another soft smile. She knew that he was worried, from the moment that they’d been informed of the due date, he had been a little concerned that he would be away when her contractions started, but she wanted to offer him a little reassurance, even if she couldn’t guarantee that he would be around, she wanted him to know that he was the first person she would call.

Iker smiled a little at the feel of her lips against his cheek before he turned his head, sneaking a quick kiss before he pushed himself up to his feet. “I should probably get moving” he noted softly “You’ll be OK?” he added, moving to lift his bag onto his shoulder.

Adriana nodded her head. “My papa is here to help out if I need anything” she mused before she pushed herself up to her feet, wrapping her arms around his neck “Good luck tonight” she added, offering him a small smile.

Iker returned her smile softly before he leant in, sneaking a couple of quick kisses. “I’ll see you in the morning” he mumbled softly before he padded out of the room.

Adriana watched after him for a couple of seconds before she shook her head, her hand gently brushing over her bump. “Your padre worries too much, doesn’t he?” she quipped softly, a light smile playing at the corner of her mouth.

“Can I get you anything?”

Adriana, who’d been quietly watching television, startled a little at the sound of her father’s voice before she lifted her head, offering him a small smile. It had been a quiet day, with Rafael having flown out to spend a few weeks with her and her little family, Adriana had been afforded the chance to relax for a while, and she was grateful, especially since she felt a little uncomfortable.

“I think I am OK” she mused softly “I mean, I’m a little uncomfortable, but I can cope. Where are Olivia and Luca?” she posed, shifting her feet to make room for her father beside her.

“I’ve just succeeded in putting them down for the night but clearly they inherited their stubbornness from their madre. They didn’t make it easy on me” he quipped, plopping into the seat beside her.

Adriana rolled her eyes a little before she felt a small wave of pain wash over her, something which caused her to shift her hand, rubbing at her bump softly.

Rafael, who was watching her, tilted his head slightly, a small frown playing on his lips. “Adriana?” he posed, not missing the pained expression on her face

Adriana startled a little at the sound of his voice before she shook her head. “It’s nothing” she mumbled softly.

“Are you sure?” Rafael posed, offering her a slightly dubious look. It wasn’t the first time, since Iker had left that morning, Adriana had appeared to be in a discomfort on more than one occasion, and Rafael wanted to ensure that she was alright.

Adriana admired the expression on his face for a couple of seconds before she opened her mouth to protest, something which was cut off as a warm sensation passed over her legs. Blinking a couple of times, she carefully shifted her hand and brushed it over the front of her jeans, her blue eyes widening a little at the damp sensation on her fingers.

“Adriana?”

Adriana, who’d been staring at her fingers, jumped a little at the sound of her father’s voice before she lifted her head, her expression soft. “I…I think I need you to get me my phone” she babbled, her tone caught between excited and nervous.

“Bump’s coming now?” Rafael posed.

“My waters have just broken” Adriana confirmed “And that means I need to call Iker, even if he is in the middle of his game. I need him here, papa” she added, her expression growing slightly fretful. She knew that it was possibility, from the moment that they’d learned the due date, there had been the risk that Iker would be away when she went into labour, but the idea of him not being in the room when the baby was born scared her, even if she had had two children, she didn’t want to do it without him.

Rafael noted the tone of her voice before he nodded his head, offering her hand a soft squeeze before he stepped out of the room in order to retrieve her phone.

Adriana watched after him for a couple of seconds before she shook her head, her hand gently rubbing her bump. “You couldn’t just hold out for a few more hours?” she mumbled softly before she tilted her head back, squeezing her eyes shut. She knew that it was long shot, the chances of Iker getting back in time to see the baby arrive were slim, but she hoped that he made it. She needed him there.
