We Could Be Something

03: If You Need Someone To Talk To

“So, how are you, Ana?” Ella mused as she sat down opposite her friend, settling a mug of tea ahead of her. It had been a few days, after Adriana’s appointment with her midwife, the two women had barely seen one another, but with a morning off, Ella had suggested that they head out for breakfast together, something which Adriana had hesitantly agreed to.

She knew that her friend meant well, since things with Jonathan had ended, Ella had been keen to offer Adriana a shoulder to cry on, and whilst the blonde was grateful to her for the support, part of her wanted her friend to calm down a little. She was still upset, even despite the fact a month had passed since she and Jonathan had split up, it did still hurt, but for a little while, she wanted to focus on something else, anything else, and she doubted that it would happen with Ella around.

Adriana, who’d been flicking through the newspaper, shrugged. “I’m alright” she noted softly “Thankfully, the morning sickness has tailed off, but all in all, I am fine. You really don’t have to ask every time you see me, you know” she added, offering her a small smile.

“I know” Ella quipped gently “But I want to make sure that you’re OK. You and Jon were together for a while and it’s not been too long since the two of you ended things” she added as tentatively as she could. She knew that Adriana didn’t like to talk about it, in the month that had passed since Jonathan had left, Adriana had barely said two words about the break up, and Ella wanted to encourage her, even if it did play on Adriana’s nerves, she wanted to encourage her to open up.

Adriana shook her head. “Ella, I’m alright” she insisted softly.

“You were with the man for 4 years, Ana” Ella countered gently.

“I know” Adriana noted “And I hate that things ended, especially the way that they did, but the fact that Jon hasn’t answered a call of mine for the last month makes it more than clear where are. It’s over, Ella, and it would appear that there is very little that I can do about it” she added, shaking her head a little. It still upset her, the fact that she hadn’t heard anything from her former boyfriend since he had called time on their relationship, but she doubted that it was going to change. Jonathan had been clear, he didn’t want to be involved with Adriana or their child, and she doubted that anything would change his mind, no matter how much she wished he would.

Ella offered her a soft glance before she reached out, gently squeezing Adriana’s hand which fiddled irritably with the napkin to her side. “It’s his loss, Ana” she murmured gently “You and bump, you deserve better” she added, offering her a small smile.

Adriana quirked a feeble smile in response before the sound of Ella’s vibrating phone reached them, causing the other woman to fish it out of her bag before she perused the message a small sigh falling out of her mouth. “I have to go” she mused softly “I’m sorry, Ana” she added.

Adriana shook her head a little before she quirked a small smile. “It’s fine, Ella” she noted softly.

“You’re sure?” Ella posed.

“I’ll be fine, Ella” Adriana quipped “I am a big girl and I can cope by myself” she added with a teasing grin.

Ella offered her a playful glare before she pressed a kiss against her cheek, bidding her goodbye before she ducked out of the café.

Adriana watched after her for a few seconds before she closed her eyes, a small frustrated sigh falling out of her mouth. She knew that it wasn’t going to be instant, for years, she and Jonathan had been in a happy relationship and it wasn’t going to be easily forgotten, but still it irked Adriana. Part of her wished she could merely forget him.

“Dr Montes?”

Adriana startled a little before she blinked her eyes open, settling them on Iker who stood beside the table, a curious look on his face. “Iker” she breathed softly “How are you?” she added, her expression soft. It had been a while, since she had overseen his medical, almost a week had past, but she knew that he was still struggling, even if she’d not seen him again. The tearful press conference that he had given about his departure from Madrid had spoken volumes.

Iker noted the slightly kind expression on her face and sighed, shaking his head slightly.

“It’s official now, isn’t it?” she noted gently.

“It is” Iker confirmed “As of next week, I will start training with my new teammates ahead of the start of the season” he added, a slight frown on his face.

“I am sure that they will make you feel welcome” Adriana noted “I know a few of them and they’re a good group. I am sure that they’ll help you settle” she encouraged gently. She doubted that it would make a difference, her words were likely similar to ones he had heard more than once since the news of his transfer had broken, but she wanted to offer him a little reassurance. He looked like he could use it.

“You think so?” Iker posed.

“They’re nice guys” Adriana noted “And I am sure that they’ll be happy to help. You’re a pretty big deal” she added with a warm smile.

Iker offered her a slightly dubious look, something which made Adriana shake her head, her smile still playing on her lips. “I am sure that you’ll be OK” she insisted softly “And if you’re not or if you just need someone to talk to, you could always talk to me” she offered gently.

Iker tilted his head. “You don’t have to do that” he protested softly.

“I know” Adriana quipped “But it’s just in case” she added gently.

“Dr Montes…”

“Adriana” the blonde woman corrected “And it’s just in case you need someone to talk to, nothing more” she enthused before she took the polystyrene cup out of his hand, jotting her phone number down on the side of it.

Iker watched her for a moment before he took the cup out of her hand, offering her a small smile. “Gracias, Adriana” he noted gently.

Adriana shook her head. “It’s no problem” she enthused.
